With growing availability and popularity of user generated content, the discipline of sentiment analysis has come to the attention of many researchers. Existing work has mainly focused on either knowledge based methods or standard machine learning techniques. In this paper we investigate sentiment polarity classification based on adaptive statistical data compression models. We evaluate the classification performance of the loss less compression algorithm Prediction by Partial Matching (PPM) as well as compression based measures using PPM-like character n-gram frequency statistics. Comprehensive experiments on three corpora show that compression based methods are efficient, easy to apply and can compete with the accuracy of sophisticated classifiers such as support vector machines.

This paper presents a novel depth image compression algorithm for both 3D Television (3DTV) and Free Viewpoint Television (FVTV) services. The proposed scheme adopts the K-means clustering algorithm to segment the depth image into K segments. The resulting segmented image is losslessly compressed and transmitted to the decoder. The depth image is then compressed using a bi-modal block encoder, where the smooth blocks are predicted using direct spatial prediction. On the other hand, blocks containing depth discontinuities are approximated using a novel depth discontinuity predictor. The residual information is then compressed using a lossy compression strategy and transmitted to the receiver. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms the state of the art spatial video coding systems available today such as JPEG and H.264/AVC Intra. Moreover, the proposed scheme manages to outperform specialized depth image compression algorithms such as the one proposed by Zanuttigh and Cortelazzo.

Computational scheme for comparison, color analysis and segmentation of images is proposed in this paper. First of all, two growing unsupervised learning algorithms are introduced. They create the so called compressed information model (CIM) of the image that replaces the original ldquoraw datardquo (the RGB pixels) with a smaller number of neurons. Then two main features are extracted from the CIM, namely the center-of-gravity of the model and the weighted average size. They could be used separately or in a two-dimensional fuzzy decision block for similarity analysis of pairs of images. Another type of image analysis is the image segmentation. A simple method for segmentation is described in the paper. It uses the unsupervised learning algorithms to generate small predetermined number of neurons (key-points of the image). Each key-point is considered as a center of the respective image segment and the area of pixels around this center corresponds to the color details of this segment. The proposed computational scheme and its application are demonstrated in the paper on test image examples.

The CCD sensors of a digital camera are arranged in a colour filter array fashion where each element records only one colour. While the majority of images captured with digital cameras are recorded in JPEG format, preserving the raw image data becomes more and more important. Typically each manufacturer uses their own proprietary raw image format and usually no compression is applied. In this paper we investigate what savings in terms of storage space can be gained by applying lossless compression to the raw colour filter array data. Based on an image set of 200+ images we evaluate eight different compression algorithms in terms of compression efficacy and compression speed. The results show that JPEG-LS seems to be best suited to be employed in digital cameras offering good compression ratios coupled with high speed.

compression of EEG signals have a basic role in the consumption power reduction of an ambulatory EEG system. This paper outlines a scheme for EEG compression based on adaptive model arithmetic coding (AMAC) and First order Markov (FM) model. In this scheme, signals are stored within an L-second buffer and quantized to some levels. Then, the AMAC-FM compression algorithm is applied to encode the symbols sequence for wireless transmission. In order to achieve the optimal entropy, this algorithm changes dynamically probability distribution of symbols based on current encoded symbols between encoder and decoder. Finally, the proposed algorithm is established to compression of Freiburg University epilepsy EEG dataset and compression ratio (CR) is obtained. The results indicate that our algorithm can achieve a high CR in relation to other EEG compression methods such as JPEG2000.

In this paper we present an on-line platform, called ***, designed to help standardization bodies and communities to benchmark compression algorithms for still 3D objects. Based on MPEG standards, this platform provides an easy-to-use API to integrate the algorithms to be evaluated. The platform automatically benchmarks them from the platform extensible 3D database. When uploading new 3D contents, benchmark results for the various available compression schemes are automatically updated. Filtering tools are provided to help performance assessment at scales ranging from individual 3D content to database subsets.

With the availability of low-cost sensor nodes there have been many standards developed to integrate and network these nodes to form a reliable network allowing many different types of hardware vendors to coexist. Most of these solutions however have aimed at industry-specific interoperability but not the size of the sensor network and the large amount of data which is collected in course of its lifetime. In this paper we use well studied data compression algorithms which optimize on bringing down the data redundancy which is related to correlated sensor readings and using a probability model to efficiently compress data at the cluster heads. As in the case of sensor networks the data reliability goes down as the network resource depletes and these types of networks lacks any central synchronization making it even more a global problem to compare different reading at the central coordinator. The complexity of calibrating each sensor and using an adaptable measured threshold to correct the reading from sensors is a severe drain in terms of network resources and energy consumption. In this paper we separate the task of comparative global analysis to a central coordinator and use a reference PMax which is a normalized probability of individual source which reflects the current lifetime reliability of the sensors calculated at the cluster heads which then is compared with the current global reliability index based on all the PMax of cluster heads. As this implementation does not need any synchronization at the local nodes it uses compress once and stamp locally without any threshold such as application specific calibration values (0-42degF) and the summarization can be application Independent making It more a sensor network reliability Index and using It independent of the actual measured values.

Importance of digitalization and compression of AV (audio/video) signals, produced in TV studios, and choose of optimal compression algorithm for different purposes, has been recognized long time ago, and in many countries, TV studios abandoned old analog transmission and storage of analog materials, leaving place for digital signal transmission and storage. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, TV studios are still producing, storing and broadcasting analog PAL signal, but according to recommendation, they should switch to DVB (digital video broadcasting) before 2012. One of DVB applications is VoD (video on demand), witch allows users to request specific AV material, stored on VoD servers, at any time they want. On order to provide that, TV studios must have VoD servers, with stored AV materials, witch they should stream to end users, on their request. Because of the actuality of this problem, the main idea of this paper was to make appropriate software solution for digitalization and trenscoding of analog PAL signal, or transcoding some digital formats, in order to produce AV file with optimal performance, according to QoS and file size, witch should be stored on VoD server. Using developed solutions, different types of compression algorithms, using different video transcoding bit rates, are tested, with the aim to recommend TV stations the solution for storage digital AV signals on VoD servers, with optimal performances, in future DVB network.

This paper addresses the problem of tampering detection and discusses one of the methods used for authenticity analysis of digital audio recordings. Presented approach is based on checking frame offsets in audio files compressed by using perceptual audio coding. This method can be further improved by applying histogram analysis of modified discrete cosine transform spectrum and detection of maximum number of nonzero spectral coefficients. The influence of compression algorithms' parameters on detection of forgeries are presented by applying AAC and Ogg Vorbis encoders as examples. The effectiveness of tampering detection algorithms proposed in this paper is tested on a predefined music database and compared graphically using ROC-like curves.
