In this paper, we present an effective low-complexity algorithm for onboard lossless compression of hyperspectral images, the algorithm based on hybrid prediction. It is suitable to spacecraft onboard implementation as having much less complexity. Specifically, the proposed algorithm is mainly composed of three parts to compress the hyperspectral images. First of all, a three-dimensional (3-D) predictor, improved LCL-3D algorithm, is used to exploit the spatial correlation and spectral correlation efficiently, then a two-dimensional (2-D) nonlinear prediction algorithm is applied on the residual image after the 3D predictor. Finally, the residual image is entropy coded by the Rice coding. Performance of the method is compared to those algorithms, pure JPEG-LS, differential JPEG-LS, CALIC-extended, and LCL-3D. Simulation results show that the method outperforms LCL-3D as well as other compression algorithms and can be implemented onboard.

Detecting anomalies in network traffic is a challenging task, not only because of the inherent difficulty of identifying anomalies such as intrusions but also because of the sheer volume of data. In this paper, we attempt to extend existing work in the field of steganalysis to the problem of detecting anomalies in network traffic. By losslessly compressing network traffic using an adaptive compression algorithm, we postulate that it is possible to characterize normal network traffic. Once typical traffic has been defined, it is possible to identify anomalous traffic as the traffic that does not compress well.

In this paper a new efficient fractal based compression algorithm is proposed for electrocardiogram signals. The self-similarities in the ECG signals make them suitable to be compressed efficiently using fractal based methods. In the proposed method, as in the basic fractal based compression method, each part of the signal is mapped to another part with a reasonable error. The transformed maps are then stored instead of the original signal samples. The signal is built up using these transforms in an iterative process using an arbitrary initial signal. Here, the morphological information of ECG is incorporated to improve the compression algorithm in compression ratio, PRD and CC. As a novel point and in contrary to other methods there is no need to detect ECG complexes, this makes the algorithm more robust and accurate. The fixed size of blocks with rotated transformed blocks and optimal coefficients for the maximum similarity between blocks are employed. The proposed algorithm was tested on a reasonable set of MIT-BIH database signals. The experiments all showed that the proposed algorithm outperforms all reported fractal-based methods.

Energy efficiency is one of the most important design metrics for wireless sensor networks. As sensor data always have redundancies, compression is introduced for energy savings. However, in some cases, it is unlikely to be wise to trade computation energy for communication savings. In this paper, a novel node-level compression arbitration mechanism is proposed, which is applied to improve compression algorithms by avoiding unnecessary energy losses. Experimental results show that the highest percent savings of energy can reach 10% ~ 30% for different kinds of datasets. Furthermore, the overhead introduced by our proposed scheme is expected to be negligible approximately.

In this paper, the concept of compressive acquisitive image sensor is extended to the temporal domain. Architecture of a compact CMOS image sensor designed based on the design paradigm capture¿compress¿store is proposed. The image sensor array is divided into quadrants. Spatial compression algorithm is integrated into quadrant-level circuit and carried out on-line before the storage phase. All the quadrants are further classified into background/non-background quadrants by an off-array adaptive judge logic. A reference array is built in the off-array logic to adaptively tracking the movement between frames. Temporal redundance between frames are removed in the readout phase. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm enables more than 50% memory saving at a PSNR level of 27 dB with around 0.5 BPP.

This paper presents a new 3D representation for non-rigid objects using motion vectors between two consecutive frames. Our method relies on an octree to recursively partition the object into smaller parts for which a small number of motion parameters can accurately represent that portion of the object. The partitioning continues as long as the respective motion parameters are insufficiently accurate to describe the object. Unlike other octree methods, our method employs an affine transformation for the motion description part, which greatly reduces the storage. Finally, an adaptive thresholding, a singular value decomposition for dealing with singularities, and a quantization and arithmetic coding further enhance our proposed method by increasing the compression while maintaining very good signal-noise ratio. Compared with other methods like tri-linear interpolation or principle component analysis (PCA) based algorithm, the affine-octree method is easy to compute and highly compact. As the results demonstrate, our method has a better performance in terms of compression ratio and PSNR, while it remains simple.

A novel compression algorithm for fingerprint image is proposed. Wavelet-based Contourlet transform (WBCT), which is based on wavelet transform and directional filter banks (DFBs), can be capable of efficiently approximating natural images containing contours and oscillatory patterns. To reduce frequency scrambling, a new scheme based on maximally-flat filters which implements the DFBs is proposed. A quadtree sorting procedure, similar to SPIHT, is used to explicitly form classes of WBCT coefficients. The classes are encoded using arithmetic and trellis-coded quantization. The resulting encoding algorithm offers consistent improvement over SPIHT performance. Simulations show that the new encoding algorithm provides improved encoding performance over SPIHT and preserves more fingerprint image details.

With a rapid increase of image resolution in recent mobile video systems, the memory bandwidth and power consumption have surfaced as critical problems in video coding. Despite many embedded compression algorithms proposed to overcome these problems, no proper algorithms have yet been reported with high enough throughput and no quality loss. This paper first proposes a lossless embedded compression algorithm with high compression ratio along with the hardware architecture for high throughput. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves at least 60% data compression without quality loss and bitrate increment. Moreover, the latency of the proposed architecture is sufficient to meet the real-time requirement of high-definition video coding, i.e., 30 cycles/macroblock. The proposed algorithm can be implemented with about 28 K gates.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is among important characteristics of general cardiac health. While 24-hour Holter monitoring is well recognized as a comprehensive analytical technique, short-term (up to 30 min.) electrocardiogram (ECG), recorded in presence of controlled environmental stimuli, remains rather unexplored in diagnostic practice. The presented method of change point detection in such class of signals addresses urgent quest from cardiologists for a simple, real time analysis of short-term ECG. Based on the concepts of sample entropy and Lempel-Ziv compression, the methodology combines sensitivity to subtle dynamical changes of the heart rate with robustness to noise. It was evaluated on 20 ECG signals from two groups of subjects: healthy and with cardiac problems. The method helps improve accuracy in discerning between the two groups and the results support hypothesis that healthy individuals are more responsive to environmental stimuli.

An intra prediction (IP) scheme based on 2D geometrical manipulation, called 2DIP, was proposed in to improve the line-based intra prediction (LIP) in H.264/AVC. In this work, we propose ways to reduce the complexity and enhance the efficiency of 2DIP and call the resultant scheme 2D enhanced intra prediction (2DEIP). These enhancements are achieved via block classification and translation vector prediction. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed 2DEIP method allows better prediction for images with complex textures. The average PSNR gain over the H.264/AVC intra prediction can be as high as 0.6 dB.
