This paper deals with the Signature Data Formats proposed by ISO 19794 project: 19794 part 7 Full Format and Compact Format (published in 2007) and the new 19794 part 11, which is under development. It will be shown how these formats handle the raw data coming from a Signature Input Device, and what the size of a Biometric Information Record is for each one. Another compression method, using LZ77 compression algorithm, is proposed and tested. The paper will also show the impact of using these compact formats on the performance of two different algorithms: Dynamic Time Warping and Gaussian Mixture Models. MCyT and SVC2004 signature databases have been used to carry out all tests.

Great progress in face recognition technology has been made recently. Such advances will provide us the possibility to build a new generation of search engine: Face Google, searching from person photos. It is very challenging to find a person from a very large or extremely large database which might hold face images of millions or hundred millions of people. The indexing technology used in most commercial search engines like Google, is very efficient for text-based search, unfortunately, it is no longer useful for image search. A solution is to use partial information (signature) about all the face images for search. The retrieval speed is approximately proportional to the size of a signature image. In this paper we will study a totally new way to compress the signature images based on the observation that the face signature images and the query images are highly correlated if they are from the same individual. The face signature image can be greatly compressed (one or two orders of magnitude improvement) by use of knowledge of the query images. We can expect the new compression algorithm to speed up face search 10 to 100 times. The challenge is that query images are not available when we compress their signature image. Our approach is to transfer the face search problem into the so-called ¿Wyner-Ziv coding¿ problem, which could give the same compression efficiency even if the query images are not available until we decompress signature images. A practical compression scheme based on LDPC codes is developed to compress face signature images.

The output distribution, when rate is above capacity, is investigated. It is shown that there is an asymptotic equipartition property (AEP) of the typical output sequences, independently of the specific codebook used, as long as the codebook is typical according to the standard random codebook generation. This equipartition of the typical output sequences is caused by the mixup of input sequences when there are too many of them, namely, when the rate is above capacity. This discovery may shed some light on the optimal design of the compress-and-forward relay schemes.

One of the fundamental technique which is used today by network security tools to detect malicious activities is 'signature based' detection. Today, the performance of the security tools is dominated by the speed of the string-matching algorithms that detect these signatures. Currently these security tools do not deal with compressed traffic, which becomes more and more common in HTTP. HTTP protocol uses the GZIP compression, which first requires some kind of decompression phase before performing the multi-patterns matching task. Thus, there is a high performance penalty in pattern matching on compressed data. In this paper we present a novel algorithm, Aho-Corasick-based algorithm for compressed HTTP (ACCH) that takes advantage of information gathered by the decompression phase in order to accelerate the commonly used Aho-Corasick pattern matching algorithm. We show by analyzing real HTTP traffic and real WAF signatures patterns, that we can skip scanning up to 75% of the data. Surprisingly, we show that in some situations, it is faster to do pattern matching on the compressed data, with the penalty of decompression, than doing pattern matching on regular traffic. As far as we know we are the first paper, that analyzes the problem of 'on-the-fly' multi-patterns matching algorithms on compressed HTTP traffic and suggest a solution.

In this article it is presented a reconfigurable transmission scheme for the lossy image transmission over congested wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This transmission scheme is based on the quad-tree algorithm for compressing each frame before transmitting it over the network. The proposed architecture: a) performs buffered transmission of quad-tree decomposed packets of an image frame over the WSN, b) measures the time of arrival of all the transmitted data packets that belongs to a single frame, at the receiver side of the network, and correspondingly c) adapts the threshold level of the compression algorithm, at the transmitter side of the network, based on an ad-hoc tuning method. The aim of this reconfiguration scheme, through the tuning of the compression threshold, is to guarantee that the established link in the WSN will provide images independently of the congestion of the network while a trade off between the quality of the received images and the refresh rate. Experimental results are presented that prove the efficacy of the proposed scheme.

Compared with some common text file compression algorithms in the factors of compress ratio, rate and data coherence, and research on the data type of the RFID tags, we can find LZSS is the appropriate compression algorithm used in the RFID tag's data storage. LZSS is a lossless compression algorithm, it has a high compress ratio and quick compress rate, so it can raise the performance of RFID system if used in the tag's data storage.

Recently we proposed a wavelet-based dynamic range compression algorithm to improve the visual quality of digital images captured in the high dynamic range scenes with non-uniform lighting conditions. The fast image enhancement algorithm which provides dynamic range compression preserving the local contrast and tonal rendition is a very good candidate in aerial imagery applications such as image interpretation for defense and security tasks. This algorithm can further be applied to video streaming for aviation safety. In this paper the latest version of the proposed algorithm which is able to enhance aerial images so that the enhanced images are better then direct human observation, is presented. The results obtained by applying the algorithm to numerous aerial images show strong robustness and high image quality.

This paper proposes a novel content-adaptive music watermarking technique which uses the principles of music theory to enhance the capacity and robustness of watermark embedding. Using the musical concepts of key and chords, certain notes, which are musically coherent with the work, can be added or removed without impacting the listeners experience. The notes serve as the carrier of the watermarked bit. Since these notes are still within the human hearing range, with high enough strength, they will still remain intact after various audio compressions or distortions. The scheme does not require the original work to extract the watermark and serves as a framework to involve musical theory in optimizing watermark embedding algorithms.

Building models and model mesh simplification multiresolution storage mechanism is the key for three-dimensional navigation widely used. This paper proposed a mesh simplification and multiresolution storage compression algorithm based on the model of edge collapse operations. First of all, it used an artificial interact method to set the protected feature points and grids and updated a series of partial model, and then simplified the three-dimensional model incremental and removal of unwanted vertex and grid, Finally entropy coding the storage part of the progressive to achieve a multi-resolution compressed storage.

In general, the transformation from RGB to YUV color space reduces the correlation between the channels. But some sources in the YUV space still have strong inter-channel correlation, which can be modeled as a linear function. Based on this linear model, we propose a new intra chrominance prediction method for color image compression in YUV 4:2:0 color space. A block of chrominance pixels to be encoded is predicted from the reconstructed luminance signal using the proposed prediction scheme and the residual is encoded based on the H.264/AVC. Also, an implicit prediction method that can obviate the transmission of side information is proposed. The experimental results show that there are about 0.35~1.0 dB gains for the luminance (Y) channel, and 0.5~3.0 dB gains for the chrominance (Cb or Cr) channels at the medium to high bit-rates. The proposed method also shows some gains at the low bit-rates.
