We propose a new lossy compression algorithm for hyperspectral images, which is based on spectral principal component analysis (PCA), followed by JPEG2000 (JP2K). The approach employs an anomaly-removal model in the compression process to preserve anomalous pixels. Results on two different hyperspectral image scenes show that the new algorithm not only provides good post-compression anomaly-detection performance but also improves rate-distortion performance.

Software in deployed sensor networks needs to be updated to introduce new functionality or to fix bugs. Reducing dissemination time is important because the dissemination disturbs the regular operation of the network. We present a method for reducing the dissemination time and energy consumption based on compression of native code modules. Code compression reduces the size of the software update, but the decompression on the sensor nodes requires processing time and energy. We quantify these trade-offs for seven different compression algorithms. Our results show that GZIP has the most favorable trade-offs, saving on average 67% of the dissemination time and 69% of the energy in a multi-hop wireless sensor network.

The use of sparse representations in signal processing is gradually increasing in the past several years. In a previous work we proposed a new method for compressing facial images using the K-SVD algorithm, which is a novel algorithm for training overcomplete dictionaries that lead to sparse signal representations. This method was shown to be most efficient, surpassing the JPEG2000 performance significantly. In this paper we present a significant addition to our compression algorithm in the form of image deblocking. Since the encoding is done in patches, a visually disturbing artifacts of blockiness appear in the reconstructed images. We eliminate these artifacts using a linear deblocking technique, which is based on local image filters. We construct a linear filter for each relevant pixel independently, and apply these filters as post-processing. This method is limited, but nevertheless it improves the PSNR of the reconstructed images and gives visually appealing results.

A new electrocardiogram (ECG) signal compression algorithm named modified set partitioning in hierarchical trees (MSPIHT), which is based on the SPIHT algorithm, has been proposed in this paper. Several measures have been taken to improve the SPIHT algorithm and these measures includes that the lifting wavelet transform is adopted, the extended zerotree structure is redefined, and the threshold optimization. Simulation experiments by using the MSPIHT algorithm and several other compression algorithms have been conducted to verify the validity of the MSPIHT algorithm and test its performance. The experimental results show that the proposed MSPIHT algorithm is valid and can achieve the better compression performance than other compression algorithms based on the wavelet transform.

Implantable devices have limited memory, computational and battery power resources, while collecting, processing and transmitting out information from potentially many sensors. These limitations require that information within the devices be efficiently compressed. Such data compression presents a challenging task, as it must provide high fidelity of the waveform reproduction and high compression ratios on limited size data frames. Also, it must efficiently run on ultra low power hardware, and allow flexible configuration, based on the type of data to be compressed. The new compression algorithm was implemented as a bit accurate Matlab simulation, consisting of the following major steps: 1. Integer wavelet transform. 2. Quantization coupled with filtration. Two selectable quantization schemes could be utilized based on the signal properties: linear and dead-zone. Data filtration is performed on bit boundaries, which simplifies hardware implementation. The filtration thresholds are made different in different wavelet sub-bands, controlled by a single parameter. 3. Original adaptive data encoding. Our approach only requires basic logical operations such as bit counters and shifts, and is highly optimized for implementation in implantable device hardware. For high reliability each compressed data frame contains all information needed for decompression. The algorithm was applied to data from the PhysioNet ECG compression test database. 40 ECG frames of 1024 samples from 4 patients were sampled at 250 Hz, 12 bit resolution, and compressed with distortions below 8%. compression ratios were 9.3plusmn2.5, consistently exceeding 85% of the theoretical limit based on bit entropy for each individual data frame. Wireless location finding has emerged as a popular issue. As one of its branches, sensor networks perform as a fundamental tool to monitor inaccessible environment. However, the limitation on system bandwidth and energy resources motivates the use of data compression at each sensor. The estimation of time-difference-of arrival (TDOA) is a key step in emitter location finding using sensor network. This paper demonstrates three compression approaches in deriving the TDOA estimation: fisher-information based method, wavelet transform method and a non-conventional monotone increase method. Simulation results are discussed in this paper. It is shown that the wavelet transform method outperforms the other two approaches, while more simulation on the combination of wavelet and fisher-information approach is still under investigation.

In this report, we propose a new video communication method for the robot vision network in which video signals are shared by "robots" and "humans". A conventional compression algorithm, such as JPEG or MPEG discards component signals insensitive to human eyes, e.g. high frequency band and tiny signals. On the contrary, the proposed method transmits minimum components necessary for recognition by "robots". In case of communications between "robots", data size to be transmitted is reduced by the proposed method. It is also possible to communicate video signals between "humans" by transmitting only the remaining components.

Image processing domain requires high calculation capacities and storage facilities especially when we manipulating huge images like ultrasonic and satellite ones. In fact, manipulating such images should be done without losing any kind of information. For this purpose, those images are generally used and manipulated without compression because actual compression algorithms do not offer the possibility of giving a good lossless compression ratio to override their slowliness. Lately, a new compression Standard, namely JPEG2000, was introduced. This standard offers, in addition to many interesting characteristics, the possibility of lossless image compression, under the same core and with extremely competitive compression ratio. In this paper we will describe the gridification and implementation of the JEPG2000 standard on the EUMEDGRID infrastructure. This gridified version of the Jasper implementation of the JPEG2000 standard follows three steps: each Worker Node extracts, remotely from the Storage Element (SE) based on Grid File Access Library routines (GFAL), a portion of the considered image, compresses it and saves the result back into the SE. A merge task is performed after the gathering of all image portions. We will demonstrate that, this gridified algorithm, not only, compresses gigabyte images successfully but also efficiently and in a highly competitive processing time.

A low cost quadratic level compression algorithm is proposed for body sensor network system. The proposed algorithm reduces the encoding delay and the hardware cost, while maintaining the reconstructed signal quality. The quadratic compression level determined by the mean deviation value is used to preserve the critical information with high compression ratio. The overall CR is 8.4:1, the PRD is 0.897% and the encoding rate is 6.4Mbps. The 16-bit sensor node processor is designed, which supports the proposed compression algorithm. The processor consumes 0.56nJ/bit at 1V supply voltage with 1MHz operating frequency in 0.25-μm CMOS process.

In this paper a new dictionary and memory based text compression technique is presented called a two-level dictionary based text compression scheme. The original words in a text file are transformed into codewords having length 2 and 3 using a dictionary comprising 73680 frequently used words in English language. Among these words most frequently used words use 2 length codewords and the rest use 3 length codewords for better compression. The codewords are chosen in such way that the spaces between words in the original text file can be removed altogether recovering a substantial amount of space. Another unique feature of our compression scheme is that we have recovered unused bit of ASCII character representation from each character to save one byte per 8 ASCII characters. Lastly a back end existing compression algorithm is used to finally compress the file. We have achieved about 75% (compression ratio of 2.01 bits per input character) reduction in size using our new compression strategy with gzip and bzip2.
