Normal mapping is one of the most essential technologies for realistic three-dimensional computer graphics. In conventional normal map compression such as 3Dc, only the x and y components are encoded and the z components are restored based on the normalizing condition. In this paper, we present an intuitively comprehensive error analysis for this approach. As a result, we reveal in what condition compression error becomes larger. We also present a non-linear quantization algorithm based on the formula for better compression performance than the conventional approaches. Experimental results using 300 normal map demonstrate that the PSNR is improved by 0.29 dB on average. Our algorithm is compatible with random access and highly-parallel processing on GPU.

In order to maximize coding efficiency the coding algorithm must ensure the probability of encoding a sequence of n quantized symbols at a rate smaller than R is maximized (i.e. there is no need to increase the quantization step size). This optimization problem is different from the one solved by algorithms like Huffman coding in which it is assumed that a large sequence of symbols are being coded. We proposed a new coding algorithm that solves the above optimization problem.

Researchers have proposed using hardware data compression units within the memory hierarchies of microprocessors in order to improve performance, energy efficiency, and functionality. However, most past work, and in particular work on cache compression, has made unsubstantiated assumptions about the performance, power consumption, and area overheads of the required compression hardware. We present a lossless compression algorithm that has been designed for on-line memory hierarchy compression, and cache compression in particular. We reduced our algorithm to a register transfer level hardware implementation, permitting performance, power consumption, and area estimation. The results of experiments comparing our work to previous work are presented.

The tool, CoTe (compression tester), is a stand-alone program aiding in preparation of the tests (that is, choosing a set of test programs, files and their locations, and setting run-time options), running the tests (executing the programs with appropriate command- line switches, measuring processing time and output file size, removing unnecessary files after the tests are finished), and maintaining the results (viewing them, exporting to portable format). CoTe comes with an embedded database of the most popular compression programs which contains command-line syntax, used compression methods, modes and additional parameters, thus making it possible to test the programs without reading their documentation first. There is also included a much smaller database of the most popular test files. In both cases the items are categorized in taxonomical groups (encompassing compression method families and file types, respectively) which can help in drawing generalized conclusions from the test results (e.g., pertaining to a family of compression methods). Of course, each database can be modified and extended from within CoTe.

Standard redundancy measures the excess number of bits needed to compress a sequence as a function of the sequencepsilas length. Since long sequences can have arbitrarily low minimum description length (MDL), even low standard redundancy can be arbitarily high compared to the sequencepsilas MDL. By contrast, relative redundancy evaluates the excess number of bits as a function of the sequencepsilas MDL. Hence unlike standard redundancy, low relative redundancy implies that the number of bits needed to compress any sequence is essentially the lowest possible. Results in [1] show that for iid distributions over binary alphabets, block relative redundancy essentially equals block standard redundancy while sequential relative redundancy is about twice its standard counterpart. We show that unlike binary alphabets, for larger alphabets both block and sequential relative redundancy essentially equal their standard counterparts. We also define and determine expected relative redundancy and show that it is almost same as worst-case relative redundancy.

Images may contain blemishes or artificial structures which come from the processing or directly from the sensors, that decrease the quality of the images and can lead to analysis and interpretation problems. We are interested in detecting these defects automatically. The aim of our method will be to look for artifacts as too regular or too irregular image structures that will be detected using the basic properties of Kolmogorov complexity.

The use of wireless inertial motion sensors, such as accelerometers, for supporting medical care and sportpsilas training, has been under investigation in recent years. As the number of sensors (or their sampling rates) increases, compressing data at source(s) (i.e. at the sensors), i.e. reducing the quantity of data that needs to be transmitted between the on-body sensors and the remote repository, would be essential especially in a bandwidth-limited wireless environment. This paper presents a set of compression experiment results on a set of inertial motion data collected during running exercises. As a starting point, we selected a set of common compression algorithms to experiment with. Our results show that, conventional lossy compression algorithms would achieve a desirable compression ratio with an acceptable time delay. The results also show that the quality of the decompressed data is within acceptable range.

The deployment of interactive services such as instant messaging, Internet telephone calls, videoconferencing and other multimedia connections has increased the use of bandwidth. The session initiation protocol (SIP) used for these applications is text-based with long signaling messages. Using SIP in wireless networks will result in significant transmission delays because of the large message size and relatively low data rates across the radio interface. SigComp (SIP signaling compression mechanism) provides a solution to this problem by offering a robust, efficient and loss-less compression of SIP messages. SigComp requires UDVM (universal decompressor virtual machine), which provides decompression functionality and is one of the most essential parts of SigComp. UDVM gives an edge to SigComp over other compression architectures by providing a flexible choice of compression algorithms. UDVM allows the applications to choose any appropriate compression algorithm of their choice. Besides signaling overhead, there is protocol header overhead due to the use of IP protocols by multimedia applications. The robust header compression (ROHC) scheme has been developed to reduce the header overhead over wireless links. This paper discusses the collective usage and deployment of SigComp and ROHC schemes in wireless networks to reduce the signaling and the protocol header overhead, respectively. We performed experiment chat sessions on our SIP platform to analyze the overhead due to long SIP messages. We present results for the performance of SigComp compression used to compress SIP messages for different compression algorithms.

This paper presents an improved method of the reversible data hiding for JPEG images proposed by Xuan, et al. The conventional method embeds data into the JPEG quantized 8 times 8 block DCT coefficients. In this method, we found that the blocks, located in the noisy part of the image, are not suitable for embedding data. The proposed method can judge whether a block consisted of 8 times 8 DCT coefficients is located in smooth part of image by using the DC coefficient of neighboring blocks. Our method can avoid the noisy part for embedding. It results in a better performance in terms of capacity-distortion behavior.

Sound localization by the human auditory system is known to be ineffective underwater. In a research study at the Acoustic Research Laboratory, we introduce additional directional cues from ultra-sonic frequency components. This enables us to work with smaller wavelengths and build simple, small, directional receivers in order to introduce Inter-aural Temporal Differences (ITD) and Inter-aural Intensity Differences (IID) cues to the human subjects. Along with a real-time acoustic bandwidth compression algorithm, we are able to introduce a sense of direction into their hearing in water. The prototype system consists of a pair of directional receivers of less than 60 mm diameter that are spaced and angled in such a way that high frequency directional cues from 20 kHz-200 kHz are created in the audio hearing range, providing a sense of direction. Several experiments have been conducted in a small tank to study the performance of the system. The preliminary results are very promising. Independent tests on the directional receivers show that subjects are able to differentiate direction to within plusmn12 degree 95% of the time. The subjects claim that there was a clear sense of direction in their hearing tests. Results from swimming pool experiments indicate that subjects wearing the prototype system demonstrate capability in direction localization, although the sense of direction seems somewhat reduced compared to the independent tests on the directional receivers. This paper presents the experimental design, and preliminary analysis of the data.
