This paper presents a new adaptive post-processing algorithm for ringing artifact reduction after image interpolation (up sampling). The algorithm is based on the concept of total variation (TV) for ringing control. It uses known TV of the blocks of the low-resolution image. Conditional gradient, subgradient and projection subgradient methods for this algorithm are considered and analyzed. A test set of 181300 overlapping 11times11 blocks of real images was used for local algorithm optimization and analysis. Local conditional gradient method shows the best objective and subjective results.

Network configuration (NETCONF) is a widely used protocol to deploy configuration of network devices. NETCONF uses different transport layer protocols like secure shell (SSH), simple object access protocol (SOAP), or blocks extensible exchange protocol (BEEP) (IETF RFCs 4742 through 4744), and assumes availability of a high bandwidth network for successful configuration deployment. In a dynamic MANET tactical edge network consisting of fast-moving aircraft and terrain obscuration, conditions exist where traditional NETCONF may be less effective and eventually fails to provide guaranteed services to the war fighter. In this paper, we will look at the performance of NETCONF in a limited bandwidth constrained environment with periods of high packet loss. We will also consider the performance effect of using other compression algorithms and binary XML to reduce the amount of configuration data that is sent. Finally, we will study the usage of UDP-based NETCONF transport to improve the performance of NETCONF. By using UDP, data can be delivered more quickly than in a TCP-based transport. The performance analysis of such an airborne network as applied to different tactical scenarios with hundreds of assets will be accomplished through simulation.

Subjective audio quality is currently obtained using expensive and time consuming listening tests that provide limited information. In this paper we show the different behaviors of several objective metrics designed to match subjective results over different audio sequences for several audio distortions. In particular we extend these metrics to the case where distortions vary temporally and evaluate performance over two common time-varying distortions.

The paper compares different data compression algorithms of text files: LZW, Huffman, fixed-length code (FLC), and Huffman after using fixed-length code (HFLC). We compare these algorithms on different text files of different sizes in terms of compression scales of: size, ratio, time (speed), and entropy. Our evaluation reveals that initially for smaller size files the simplest algorithm namely LZW performs worst for first two scales than the more complex Huffman algorithm but as the size of the text increases interestingly the position is reversed. Moreover for the scales time and entropy LZW performs better than Huffmans but for larger files once again the position is reversed.

In this paper,a new lifting scheme of directionlet transform(LDT) is presented,the corresponding multidirectional and anisotropic transform has latticebased separable filtering and subsampling along any two directions with rational *** design an adaptive compression algorithm based on LDT,using the quad-tree segmentation resulting optimized *** results show that our proposed compression algorithm for image coding outperforms the standard wavelet-based SPIHT and JPEG2000 both in terms of PSNR and visual quality,especially at the low-rate.

Many sensing systems remotely monitor/measure an environment at several sites, and then report these observations to a central site. We propose and investigate several practical algorithms for joint routing and compression of data files as they are forward from remote nodes to a central site, with the goal of minimizing the communication cost incurred. Our algorithms are practical in that they do not assume that nodes have a priori information about the correlation structure (and resulting compression gains) of the individual measurements at a given sensor or among multiple sensors. Instead, this correlation structure is learned as pieces of the files are routed and jointly compressed on their way to the sink, and routes are adaptively changed as the nodes learn more about the correlation structure of the data.

Many popular image compression schemes are based on block-transform coding, a technique where images are broken into small blocks of pixels prior to transformation and compression. Block-transform coding often introduces blocking artifacts which are particularly prevalent at low bit-rates due to quantization errors. A novel algorithm for deblocking block-transform compressed images is proposed in this paper. This algorithm is based on a phase-adaptive, shifted thresholding technique that estimates the original uncompressed image as the weighted sum of shifted versions of the decompressed image subjected to a threshold. An efficient integer transform is used to construct the shifted versions of the decompressed image. The aggregation weights are obtained adaptively using the local phase moment characteristics of the underlying image content. The proposed algorithm utilizes important human perceptual characteristics to provide effective image deblocking while preserving image detail. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than comparable methods and yields both subjective results and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) results comparable to existing methods.

Data compression techniques can alleviate low bandwidth problems in multigigabit networks and are especially useful when combined with encryption. This paper presents a reconfigurable hardware compressor core, the Titan-R, which can compress data streams at 8.5 Gb/sec making it the fastest reconfigurable such device ever proposed. Its compression algorithm is a variation of the most widely used and efficient such scheme the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) algorithm that uses part of the previous input stream as the dictionary. In order to support this high network throughput the Titan-Rutilizes a very fine-grained pipeline and takes advantages of the high-bandwidth provided by the distributed on-chip RAMs of the state-of-the-art FPGAs.

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for mining frequent itemsets. This algorithm is named AMFI (Algorithm for Mining Frequent Itemsets). This algorithm compresses the data while maintaining the necessary semantics for the frequent itemsets mining problem and it is more efficient that traditional compression algorithms. The AMFI efficiency is based on a compressed vertical binary representation of the data and on a very fast support count. AMFI performs a breadth first search through equivalence classes. We compare our proposal with an implementation using PackBits algorithm.
