Integrating humans in Ecosystem Management using Multi-Criteria Decision Making

The Ecosystem Management (EM) process belongs to the category of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problems. It requires appropriate decision support systems (DSS) where "all interested people" would be involved in the decision making process. Environmental values critical to EM, such as the biological diversity, health, productivity and sustainability, have to be studied, and play an important role in modeling the ecosystem functions;human values and preferences also influence decision making. Public participation in decision and policy making is one of the elements that differentiate EM-from the traditional methods of management. Here, a methodology is presented on how to quantify human preferences in EM decision making. The case study of the National Park of River Nestos Delta and Lakes Vistonida and Ismarida in Greece, presented as an application of this methodology, shows that the direct involvement of the public, the quantification of its preferences and the decision maker's attitude provide a strong tool to the EM decision making process. Public preferences have been given certain weights and three MCDM methods, namely, the Expected Utility Method, compromise programming and the Analytic Hierarchy Process, have been used to select alternative management solutions that lead to the best configuration of the ecosystem and are also socially acceptable.

Managing forest and marginal agricultural land for multiple tradeoffs: compromising on economic, carbon and structural diversity objectives

In this paper, we use compromise programming to solve a multiple-objective land use and forest management planning model. Long- and short- ('fast') term carbon uptake, maintenance of structural diversity, and economic (net returns to forestry and agriculture) objectives are simultaneously achieved by minimizing the distance between current objective values and the ideal ones. Two distance metrics are used, representing a risk neutral and highly risk-averse decision maker. An application of the model to public forestland and adjacent private agricultural lands in the (boreal) Peace River region of northeastern British Columbia indicates that both short- and long-term carbon uptake, and maintenance of structural diversity, can be achieved only at the high financial costs. Contrary to earlier studies, we also find conflict between both short- and long-term carbon uptakes and maintenance of landscape structural diversity. Targeting short-term carbon uptake results in the greatest deviation from desired structural diversity, although the deviation is somewhat smaller with respect to the long-term carbon uptake goal. Further, risk neutral and risk-averse decision makers will employ significantly different land use and forest management strategies. Finally, the 'balanced' strategy (which underachieves attainment of the 'ideal' by the same degree for all objectives) attains diversity targets quite closely, but significantly underachieves economic and carbon objectives. Maximization of the weighted sum of objective deviations results in an 'average' strategy that performs much better in attaining carbon objectives, but diversity is sacrificed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper discusses the extension of results on monotonicity of the compromise set valid for bicriteria problems to general multicriteria problems under a very general condition, which is assumable in compromise programming problems coming from economics. Mainly, the problem that we treat is the following: find and describe the compromise set when the feasible set is a convex set in the positive cone, limited by a level hypersurface of a differentiable production-transformation function. This scenario is usual in many economic applications, chiefly in production analysis.

Multi-Objective Planning for Conjunctive Use of Surface and Ground Water Resources Using Genetic programming

In arid and semi-arid regions, climate change causes a drastic decline in the volume of water resources as water demands increase. Thus, the present study is aimed at using a simulation-optimization model to perform conjunctive management of surface-ground water use to achieve two main objectives: (1) minimizing shortages in meeting irrigation water demands and (2) maximizing the total agricultural net benefit for the main crops of an agricultural sector. To meet these main goals, first, the genetic programming (GP) method is used to simulate surface water-groundwater interactions. Then, the simulation model is linked to a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) as the optimization model, yielding a simulation-optimization model. In order to investigate the impact of different climatic conditions on the optimized surface and ground water allocation and propose an optimal crop pattern for each climatic period, three planning periods (wet, normal and dry) were addressed in modeling the conjunctive water use management problem. Finally, the economic results of this study suggested a maximum increase in the net benefit by 38.19%, 59.37% and 45%, as compared to those obtained in the actual operation in wet, normal and dry years, respectively, for one study sub-area. The net benefit was also increased by at most 84.79%, 83.3% and 120.77% in wet, normal and dry years, respectively, for another study sub-area, demonstrating the competence of the optimal conjunctive use model to enhance net benefits with the least negative socio-environmental impacts resulting from any development and management scheme in the field of water resources.

VIKOR approach for bi-level multi-criteria nonlinear fractional programming problems: new insights

Purpose The paper aims to introduce a novel concept to solve the bi-level multi-criteria nonlinear fractional programming (BL-MCNFP) problems. Bi-level programming problem (BLPP) is rigorously flourished and studied by several researchers, which deals with decentralized decisions by comprising a sequence of two optimization problems, namely upper and lower-level problems. However, on the other hand, many real-world decision-making problems involve multiple objectives with fraction aspects, called fractional programming problems that reflect technical and economic performance. Design/methodology/approach This paper introduces a VIKOR ("VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje") approach to solve the BL-MCNFP problem. In this approach, an aggregating function based on L-P metrics is formulated on the basis of the "closeness" scheme from the "ideal" solution. The three steps perform the solution process: First, a new concept is attempted to minimize and maximize of the numerators and denominators from their respective ideal solutions and anti-ideal values simultaneously. Second, for each level, the K-dimensional objective space of each level is converted to a one-dimensional space by an aggregating function. Third, to obtain the final solution, all levels are combined into single-level model where the decision variables of upper levels are interrelated with other levels through fuzzy strategy-based linear and nonlinear membership functions. Findings The effectiveness of the proposed VIKOR is demonstrated by numerical examples, where the reported results affirm that the extended VIKOR method provides superior results in comparison with the same methods in the literature, and it is a good alternative to BL-MCNFP problems. Originality/value In terms of the assistance-based right decision, a parametric analysis for the weight of the majority is provided to exhibit a wide range of compromise solutions for the decision-maker.

In modem investment theory the path to portfolio selection involves two steps, which are efficient frontier and expected utility maximization, the latter being necessary to determine the best efficient choice for an individual investor with particular preferences for profitability and safety. However, mutual funds are not individual investors, and therefore, the analyst could make very little sense of expected utility maximization as he fails to see how a utility function can be assigned to the multiplicity of share holders and potential investors related to a fund. We address the problem of mutual fund portfolio selection by searching for a portfolio ranking based on compromise properties to find utility bounds from statistical information on investor's preferences. Selecting the optimal gridded climate dataset for Nigeria using advanced time series similarity algorithms

Choosing a suitable gridded climate dataset is a significant challenge in hydro-climatic research, particularly in areas lacking long-term, reliable, and dense records. This study used the most common method (Perkins skill score (PSS)) with two advanced time series similarity algorithms, short time series distance (STS), and cross-correlation distance (CCD), for the first time to evaluate, compare, and rank five gridded climate datasets, namely, Climate Research Unit (CRU), TERRA Climate (TERRA), Climate Prediction Center (CPC), European Reanalysis V.5 (ERA5), and Climatologies at high resolution for Earth's land surface areas (CHELSA), according to their ability to replicate the in situ rainfall and temperature data in Nigeria. The performance of the methods was evaluated by comparing the ranking obtained using compromise programming (CP) based on four statistical criteria in replicating in situ rainfall, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature at 26 locations distributed over Nigeria. Both methods identified CRU as Nigeria's best-gridded climate dataset, followed by CHELSA, TERRA, ERA5, and CPC. The integrated STS values using the group decision-making method for CRU rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures were 17, 10.1, and 20.8, respectively, while CDD values for those variables were 17.7, 11, and 12.2, respectively. The CP based on conventional statistical metrics supported the results obtained using STS and CCD. CRU's Pbias was between 0.5 and 1;KGE ranged from 0.5 to 0.9;NSE ranged from 0.3 to 0.8;and NRMSE between - 30 and 68.2, which were much better than the other products. The findings establish STS and CCD's ability to evaluate the performance of climate data by avoiding the complex and time-consuming multi-criteria decision algorithms based on multiple statistical metrics.

Numerical study and optimization of thermohydraulic characteristics of a graphene-platinum nanofluid in finned annulus using genetic algorithm combined with decision-making technique

The heat transfer and flow attributes of a cylindrical microchannel heat sink (CMCHS) operated with a hybrid nanofluid containing the graphene nanoplatelets and platinum particles are numerically investigated. The CMCHS is modeled with three different numbers of fins, and the problem is solved for four concentrations and four Reynolds numbers. The effect of these variables on the thermal and frictional parameters-such as the convective heat transfer coefficient, pressure loss, friction coefficient, thermal resistance, and maximum temperature-is evaluated. The heat transfer coefficient increases by raising the Reynolds number, concentration, and fin number. Thereby, with an increase in fin number from 25 to 36 at Reynolds number of 300 and concentration of 0.1%, the convective heat transfer coefficient is enhanced by 134%. The maximum performance evaluation criterion (PEC) is obtained as 1.98 at concentration of 0.1%, Reynolds number of 600, and number of fins of 36. The thermal resistance decreases by increasing each of the parameters of fin number, Reynolds number, and concentration. Based on the obtained data, a predictor model for the output parameters (i.e., heat transfer coefficient, thermal resistance, and pumping power) is derived by a neural network. Then, the optimization is performed using a genetic algorithm combined with decision-making technique considering different designer's viewpoints to achieve the highest convective heat transfer coefficient and the lowest pumping power and thermal resistance.

A more efficient and sustainable use of available water resources, especially in arid and semiarid areas, is a real challenge for many countries. The reutilization of treated wastewater for irrigation purposes is becoming more widespread in many places around the world because of its positive economic, agricultural and environmental impacts. The present study focuses on the case of North Tunisia, where policymakers are reconsidering the improvement of irrigation practices based on using recycled water. Its aim is twofold: firstly, evaluate the opinion of the stakeholders involved in decision-making (policymakers and farmers) through a compromise programming (multi-criteria decision making technique). Secondly, determine whether farmers would be willing to pay more for water if irrigation programs were improved and analyze the factors that influence their decision. The present study peruses a binary logistic regression analysis to address these questions. The main finding is that policymakers and famers agree that the best option is to invest in tertiary wastewater treatment. Indeed, more than 80% of farmers are willing to pay more for higher quality water. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Design of heat sink for improving the performance of thermoelectric generator using two-stage optimization

Thermoelectric (TE) devices can provide clean energy conversion and are environmentally friendly;however, little research has been published on the optimal design of air-cooling systems for thermoelectric generators (TEGs). The present study investigates the performance of a TEG combined with an air-cooling system designed using two-stage optimization. An analytical method is used to model the heat transfer of the heat sink and a numerical method with a finite element scheme is employed to predict the performance of the TEG. In the first-stage optimization, the optimal fin spacing for a given heat sink geometry is obtained in accordance with the analytical method. In the second-stage optimization, called compromise programming, decreasing the length of the heat sink by increasing its frontal area (WHSHf) is the recommended design approach. Using the obtained compromise point, though the heat sink efficiency is reduced by 20.93% compared to that without the optimal design, the TEG output power density is increased by 88.70%. It is thus recommended for the design of the heat sink. Moreover, the TEG power density can be further improved by scaling-down the TEG when the heat sink length is below 14.5 mm.
