Integrated water resources management in polrud irrigation system

Water is needed in all aspects of life and is vital to its social, economical and environmental dimensions. Having a key role in sustainable development, water management requires an integrated approach. Irrigation Water shortage promotes the development of innovative management and supply enhancement models. Effective water management requires a comprehensive consideration of all related aspects, e.g., technical, social, environmental, institutional, political and financial. Then the conventional methods of cost-benefit analysis and single-objective models have changed to multi-objective models. The rising of population in Iran puts significant pressure on authorities and infrastructures to provide water. Without improvement in water management, Irrigation demand will continue to increase, water supplies will diminish and the population pressure will decay infrastructure. This paper describes compromise programming to solve multi-criteria decision making in irrigation planning for Polrud project in the North of Iran. The important objectives of project are: regulation of reliable water at the demand time, improving rice and tea production, domestic water supply, environmental needs as well as reducing social conflicts. After execution of the model, results show the optimum decision for crops pattern and extents of allocated water to each area. This study is a successful implementation of IWRM in irrigation planning.

General Circulation Models (GCMs) provide vital information on the likely future climate, much needed for the effective planning and management of water resources. The performance assessment of GCMs has received significant attention in recent years for reliable estimation of future climate. Even though many approaches have been trialled in the ranking of GCMs for the selection of an appropriate ensemble, there is still a need to explore the potential of the state-of-the-art ranking approaches for a more dependable selection of GCMs suitable for a given task, over a region of interest. The present study assessed the potential of a state-of-the-art feature selection method known as Symmetrical Uncertainty (SU) in ranking 20 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) GCMs based on their ability to simulate monthly precipitation and the monthly average of daily maximum and minimum temperature for annual, monsoon and winter seasons. The performance of GCMs was assessed using gridded climate data obtained from Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and Princeton Global Meteorological Forcing dataset (Prin) over the period 1961-2005 considering Pakistan as the study area. The ranks obtained with SU were compared with those obtained using two well-established ranking approaches;(1) compromise programming (CP) and (2) Wavelet-based Skill Score (WSS). According to the results of this study, for the simulation of all the three climate variables in all seasons;CESM1-CAM5, HadGEM2-AO, NorESIVM1-M and HadGEM2-ES were identified as the best GCMs by SU, whereas CESM1-CAM5, HadGEM2-AO, NorESM1-M and GFDL-CM3 were identified as the best GCMs by CP, and CCSM4, CESM1-CAM5, GFDL-ESM2G and HadGEM2-ES by WSS. The comparison of ranks of GCMs obtained using the same ranking approach but based on different gridded data products showed more or less similar ranks for a given GCM. Aggregating high-priority landscape areas to the parcel level: An easement implementation tool

Landscape characteristics and parcel ownership information are often collected on different spatial scales leading to difficulties in implementing land use plans at the parcel level. This study provides a method for aggregating highly resolute landscape planning information to the parcel level. Our parcel prioritization model directly incorporates a Land Trust's conservation goals in the form of a compromise programming model. We then demonstrate the use of our approach for implementation decisions, including parcel selection under a budget constraint and the estimation of a total conservation budget necessary to meet specific conservation goals. We found that these cost constraints significantly alter the composition of the 'best' parcels for conservation and can also provide guidance for implementation. The model's results were integral to a local Land Trust's ability to further define and achieve their goals. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Assessment and optimization of hydrothermal characteristics for a non-Newtonian nanofluid flow within miniaturized concentric-tube heat exchanger considering designer's viewpoint

Flow and convective heat transfer of a non-Newtonian nanofluid containing Cu nanoparticles in the annuli are investigated. The base fluid is solution of 0.4 wt% Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) in water, having pseudo-plastic behavior. Increasing the concentration and reducing the particle size enhance the pressure drop of the nanofluid flow, and also the convective heat transfer coefficient on both inner and outer walls of the annulus. Meanwhile by narrowing the annulus, the pressure drop intensifies and the convective heat transfer coefficient of the outer wall improves, while that of the inner wall decreases. The influence of the concentration changing on the pressure drop is more significant than the effects of radius ratio and particle size. Using the data obtained from the numerical simulations, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is developed to predict the convective heat transfer coefficients in both wall, and the pressure drop in terms of radius ratio, volume concentration, and particle size. In addition, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) coupled with compromise programming technique is employed for optimization in order to find the optimal cases with maximum heat transfer and minimum pressure drop considering designer's viewpoint. A novel heuristic approach to determine compromise management for end-of-life electronic products

The European Union directive of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment for recycling end-of-life (EOL) products has had a significant impact on global enterprises. Recent studies have shed light on optimization of the EOL process. In addition to identifying the most economical EOL process, identifying the EOL process with the smallest environmental load is equally important, and this is thus a bi-criteria optimization problem. This study attempts to optimize EOL processes for electronic products based on a three-stage heuristic approach, which simultaneously minimizes cost and environmental impact. The proposed heuristic approach then assesses the most common disassembly and recycling processes by using the characteristics of electronic product recycling. Next, the best process for this bicriteria optimization problem is identified by using the compromise programming method. The empirical analysis is based on data for notebook, and the potential impact on best EOL processes when notebook adopt new product designs is also discussed. Agricultural water management is a complex decision-making problem involving multiple criteria of different nature as well as multiple decision agents with different interests. To handle this multiplicity of objectives and interests a pragmatic approach based on compromise programming is proposed in this paper. The methodology is applied to an agricultural water management problem in Tauste, Spain. Public, environmentalist and private decision makers are considered. The approach proposed reveals itself as a pragmatic alternative to other approaches based on aggregate utility functions with very sound theoretical underpinnings but with few possibilities of actually being put into practice.

Bi-objective short-term scheduling in a rolling horizon framework: a priori approaches with alternative operational objectives

This study addresses short-term scheduling problems with throughput and makespan as conflicting objectives, focusing on a priori multi-objective methods. Two contributions are presented. The first contribution is to propose a priori methods based on the hybridization of compromise programming and the epsilon-constraint method that have computational benefits over the original methods. The second is to present short-term operational objective functions, that can be used within short-term scheduling to optimize desired long term objectives. Two numerical case studies, i.e. a semiconductor processing plant and a scientific services facility, are presented using a rolling horizon framework, which demonstrate the potential for the proposed methods to improve solution quality over a traditional a priori approach. A Multiobjective Approach for the Optimal Placement of Protection and Control Devices in Distribution Networks With Microgrids

Protection and control systems represent an essential part of distribution networks by ensuring the physical integrity of components and by improving system reliability. Protection devices isolate a portion of the network affected by a fault, while control devices reduce the number of de-energized loads by transferring loads to neighboring feeders. The integration of distributed generation has the potential to enhance the continuity of energy services through islanding operation during outage conditions. In this context, this study presents a multi-objective optimization approach for sizing and allocating protection and control devices in distribution networks with microgrids supplied by renewable energy sources. Reclosers, fuses, remote-controlled switches, and directional relays are considered in the formulation. Demand and generation uncertainties define the islanding operation and the load transfer possibilities. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm is applied in the solution of the allocation problem considering two conflicting objectives: cost of energy not supplied and equipment cost. The compromise programming is then performed to achieve the best solution from the Pareto front. The results show interesting setups for the protection system and viability of islanding operation.

Effects of geometrical parameters on hydrothermal characteristics of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with helical baffles: Numerical investigation, modeling and optimization

This study attempts to simulate the flow and heat transfer in shell-and-tube heat exchanger with helical baffles. The effects of geometrical parameters (i.e., helix angle and baffle pitch) on the convective heat transfer and pressure drop have been investigated. The results indicate that application of helical baffles results in almost uniform distribution of temperature and pressure. Furthermore, both convective heat transfer and pressure drop increase by decreasing the helix angle and baffle pitch. In order to find optimum helix angle and baffles overlapping, two-objective optimization was performed, in which neural network was applied to obtain the objective functions. By performing optimization, 38 optimal cases were obtained. After finding the optimal cases, the compromise programming technique was utilized in order to facilitate the decision making process for selection among the optimal points. When importance of heat transfer and pressure drop is considered to be similar, using helical baffles with low overlapping (i.e., high baffle pitch) and low helix angle is suggested, while in case which heat transfer is regarded to be more important than pressure drop, application of helical baffles with high overlapping and low helix angle is recommended. Selection of the gridded temperature dataset for assessment of thermal bioclimatic environmental changes in Amu Darya River basin

Assessment of the thermal bioclimatic environmental changes is important to understand ongoing climate change implications on agriculture, ecology, and human health. This is particularly important for the climatologically diverse transboundary Amy Darya River basin, a major source of water and livelihood for millions in Central Asia. However, the absence of longer period observed temperature data is a major obstacle for such analysis. This study employed a novel approach by integrating compromise programming and multicriteria group decision-making methods to evaluate the efficiency of four global gridded temperature datasets based on observation data at 44 stations. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by comparing the results obtained using symmetrical uncertainty, a machine learning similarity assessment method. The most reliable gridded data was used to assess the spatial distribution of global warming-induced unidirectional trends in thermal bioclimatic indicators (TBI) using a modified Mann-Kendall test. Ranking of the products revealed Climate Prediction Center (CPC) temperature as most efficient in reconstruction observed temperature, followed by TerraClimate and Climate Research Unit. The ranking of the product was consistent with that obtained using SU. Assessment of TBI trends using CPC data revealed an increase in the T-min in the coldest month over the whole basin at a rate of 0.03-0.08 degrees C per decade, except in the east. Besides, an increase in diurnal temperature range and isothermally increased in the east up to 0.2 degrees C and 0.6% per decade, respectively. The results revealed negative implications of thermal bioclimatic change on water, ecology, and public health in the eastern mountainous region and positive impacts on vegetation in the west and northwest.
