A compromise programming method using multibounds formulation and dual approach for multicriteria structural optimization

To enhance the reliability and efficiency of the multicriteria optimization procedure, a compromise programming method using multibounds formulation (MBF) is proposed in this paper. This method can be used either to obtain the Pareto optimum set or to find the 'best' Pareto optimum solution in the sense of having the minimum distance to the utopia point. By introducing a set of artificial design variables, it is shown that a simplified and easy-to-use formulation can be established for practical applications. Particularly, this formulation is well adapted to the efficient dual solution approach due to the convexity of objective function. Theoretically, based on the Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions, demonstrations show that the new formulation is equivalent to its original form and thus retains the basic properties of the latter. This paper presents a multi-objective programming scheme for the conceptual design of aerodynamic missile's structure using topological optimization approaches, in which both the compliance and eigenfrequency are regarded as static and dynamic optimization objectives, respectively. During the conceptual design of the aerodynamic missile with multiple loadings, both the multilevel sequential programming approach and the compromising programming method are coupled together to settle the associated difficulties when the whole structure of the missile body is considered as a pre-defined design domain. The compromise programming method is first applied to describe the statically loaded multi-stiffness topology optimization, and the dynamic formulation is used to establish the subsequent optimization problem mainly concerned with free vibration. The main advantage of the proposed scheme is the flexibility of dealing with optimal topology designs for the whole structures of aerodynamic missiles with complicated loading cases. Solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) is used as the interpolation scheme to indicate the dependence of material modulus upon regularized element densities. The sequential convex programming approach is applied to solve the optimization problem. An engineering application is used to demonstrate the characteristics of the presented methodologies based on the commercial software package of *** at Altair(R). (C) 2006 Elsevier SAS. Participatory floodplain management in the Red River Basin, Canada

Floodplain management is a subject in which everyone in the floodplain is a stakeholder. Real participation only takes place when stakeholders are part of the decision-making process. This can occur directly when local communities come together to make floodplain management choices or if democratically elected or otherwise accountable agencies or groups can represent stakeholders. Real participation is more than consultation and requires that stakeholders at all levels of the social structure have an impact on decisions at different levels of floodplain management. A participatory approach is the only means for achieving long-lasting consensus and common agreement. However, for this to occur, stakeholders and officials from water management agencies have to recognize that the sustainability of floodplain management decisions is a common problem and that all parties are going to have to sacrifice some desires for the common good. There is common responsibility for making participation possible. This involves (a) the creation of mechanisms for stakeholder consultation at various scales (from local, over watershed to national) and (b) the creation of participatory capacity, particularly amongst marginalized social groups. This may include awareness raising, confidence building and education, as well as the provision of the economic resources needed to facilitate participation and the establishment of good and transparent sources of information. This work focuses on the methodology for stakeholder participation in floodplain management. Floodplain management problems are characterized by multiple objectives and large number of stakeholders. The solution methodologies adapted for multi-criteria multi participant decision problems are generally based on aggregation of decisions obtained for individual decision makers. Integrated water resources management in polrud irrigation system

Water is needed in all aspects of life and is vital to its social, economical and environmental dimensions. Having a key role in sustainable development, water management requires an integrated approach. Irrigation Water shortage promotes the development of innovative management and supply enhancement models. Effective water management requires a comprehensive consideration of all related aspects, e.g., technical, social, environmental, institutional, political and financial. Then the conventional methods of cost-benefit analysis and single-objective models have changed to multi-objective models. The rising of population in Iran puts significant pressure on authorities and infrastructures to provide water. Without improvement in water management, Irrigation demand will continue to increase, water supplies will diminish and the population pressure will decay infrastructure. This paper describes compromise programming to solve multi-criteria decision making in irrigation planning for Polrud project in the North of Iran. The important objectives of project are: regulation of reliable water at the demand time, improving rice and tea production, domestic water supply, environmental needs as well as reducing social conflicts. After execution of the model, results show the optimum decision for crops pattern and extents of allocated water to each area. This study is a successful implementation of IWRM in irrigation planning.

Multiple stiffness topology optimizations of continuum structures

This paper presents a new multi-objective topology optimization algorithm for continuum structures under multiple loading cases. An expert evaluation method of weights based on grey system theory is proposed to calculate the objective weights when the compromise programming approach is employed as a multi-objective optimization scheme converting the multi-objective problem to a single objective problem. A modified updating scheme with a self-adaptive move limit for design variables is also suggested, SIMP is regarded as density-stiffness interpolation scheme and the optimality criteria method is used as the optimizer. Numerical instabilities, such as checkerboards and mesh dependencies, are also discussed. The validities of these methods in this paper are demonstrated by some numerical applications.

This paper has presented a novel multi-criteria formulation for the topology optimization design of compliant mechanisms by using sequential convex programming approach. Both structural strain energy and mechanical efficiency are shaped together through compromise programming method to develop a new combined formulation to meet the optimal design according to the demands of minimizing structural compliance and maximizing mechanical function specification. The artificial spring model is resorted to reveal the relationship between the work-piece and the compliant mechanism, and the dummy load method is used to further engrave the formulation pattern by superposition of two load cases. Displacement limitation and material usage are imposed as external constraints to narrow the design domain. A sequential convex programming using the approximations of the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) is applied to solve the optimization problem. SIMP interpolation scheme is used to indicate the dependence between the elastic modulus upon regularized element densities. Numerical examples have been applied to demonstrate the validation of the proposed methods.

A linkage between the Analytic Hierarchy process and the compromise programming Models

In the search for a unifying theory in the field of multicriteria decision making, we establish a relationship in the discrete case between two of the most extended multicriteria decision making approaches, namely the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the compromise programming (CP) Models. In order to link them, we consider a hierarchical modelling of the CP where the order of the norm equals one, and we employ the regret associated with the AHP priorities measured in absolute tenns. This regret can be considered as the anchor that allows us to link the relativity of the AHP with the goal-seeking behaviour of the CP. In general, the establishment of a unified framework in this field may clarify the controversies that exist between the different schools of thought, Which will undoubtedly result in the improvement of both the theoretical and practical applications. This study attempts to apply a management science technique to improve the efficiency of Hospital Administration. We aim to design the performance of the surgical services at a Public Hospital that allows the Decision-Maker to plan surgical scheduling over one year in order to reduce waiting lists. Real decision problems usually involve several objectives that have parameters which are often given by the decision maker in an imprecise way. It is possible to handle these kinds of problems through multiple criteria models in terms of possibility theory. Here we apply a Possibilistic Linear Multiobjective programming method, developed by the authors, for solving a hospital management problem using a Fuzzy compromise programming approach. Managing forest and marginal agricultural land for multiple tradeoffs: compromising on economic, carbon and structural diversity objectives

In this paper, we use compromise programming to solve a multiple-objective land use and forest management planning model. Long- and short- ('fast') term carbon uptake, maintenance of structural diversity, and economic (net returns to forestry and agriculture) objectives are simultaneously achieved by minimizing the distance between current objective values and the ideal ones. Two distance metrics are used, representing a risk neutral and highly risk-averse decision maker. An application of the model to public forestland and adjacent private agricultural lands in the (boreal) Peace River region of northeastern British Columbia indicates that both short- and long-term carbon uptake, and maintenance of structural diversity, can be achieved only at the high financial costs. Contrary to earlier studies, we also find conflict between both short- and long-term carbon uptakes and maintenance of landscape structural diversity. Targeting short-term carbon uptake results in the greatest deviation from desired structural diversity, although the deviation is somewhat smaller with respect to the long-term carbon uptake goal. Further, risk neutral and risk-averse decision makers will employ significantly different land use and forest management strategies. Finally, the 'balanced' strategy (which underachieves attainment of the 'ideal' by the same degree for all objectives) attains diversity targets quite closely, but significantly underachieves economic and carbon objectives. Maximization of the weighted sum of objective deviations results in an 'average' strategy that performs much better in attaining carbon objectives, but diversity is sacrificed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Building consensus in environmental impact assessment through multicriteria modeling and sensitivity analysis

Multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) increasingly is being applied in environmental impactassessment (EIA). In this article, two MCDA techniques, stochastic analytic hierarchy process and compromise programming, are combined to ascertain the environmental impacts of and to rank two alternative sites for Mexico City's new airport. Extensive sensitivity analyses were performed to determine the probability of changes in rank ordering given uncertainty in the hierarchy structure, decision criteria weights, and decision criteria performances. Results demonstrate that sensitivity analysis is fundamental for attaining consensus among members of interdisciplinary teams and for settling debates in controversial projects. It was concluded that sensitivity analysis is critical for achieving a transparent and technically defensible MCDA implementation in controversial EIA.
