A multiobjective decision support system for multiresource forest management

A multiobjective and/or multiperson decision support system for analyzing multiresource forest management problems is developed in this paper. The procedure includes formulating the problem in a multiobjective and group decision making framework, and solving it using two solution techniques which consist of a distance-based compromise programming (CP) and a cooperative game theoretic approach of the Nash equilibrium type. The problem consists of five forest resources management objective functions to be maximized. Solving the problem using the two solution techniques enables determining a satisfactory compromise solution of the five forest resource management objectives. Sensitivity analysis of the two techniques shows compromise programming to be more sensitive to changes in the weight and the p-parameter of the technique while the cooperative game theoretic approach is relatively robust with respect to changes in the worst utility set.

The management of forests in the Mediterranean basin is a complex problem, for which many political solutions have been used. In Portugal, these solutions tried to overcome the small property dimension, the elderly and/or absent owners and their relation with new functions and new approaches of forestry areas linked with changes on Common Agricultural Policy and the agriculture development paradigm. The solution must take into account the valorization of all economic activities that exist in the forest, but also the fire risk decreasing and the biodiversity preservation. This paper proposes a model that allows designing several economic scenarios, producing biodiversity and fire risk indicators, but also achieving the best compromise solution between these issues using compromise programming. The model was applied in a Forest Intervention Zone Arade-Alte/S. B. Messines, in the South of Portugal. The results show that themodel is able to provide important information by creating a complete management plan and simulating the best compromise solution among fire risk, economic result and the biodiversity indicator, providing an added background for the analysts. Horticultural consultants recommending fertilisers must consider a large amount of information to determine an optimal fertiliser mix. Difficulty arises when matching the estimated levels of nutrient requirements with those available in fertiliser products, as it is unlikely a single, or combination, of fertilisers will match exactly the required nutrients. It is assumed that consultants are proficient at making fertiliser recommendations, but desire to improve the process of making, and accuracy of, the recommendations. The objectives of this study were to describe the process consultants go through when providing a fertiliser recommendation and then use this information to design a decision support system (DSS) as an aid to the fertiliser selection process. Data was collected from three consultants to develop a conceptual model of how the fertiliser recommendation service consultants provide operates. With this information a DSS model consisting of client and fertiliser databases, an optimisation component and an user interface was developed. The optimisation component uses a compromise programming approach. The objective function minimises the deviations from the targets of a cost goal and nutrient requirement goals. The DSS was run using samples provided by the consultants and the results were compared with what they had recommended. Even though the results from the DSS model did not match exactly what the consultant had recommended, most of the DSS solutions were cheaper and weighed less. The information generated provides a good starting point from which to make a fertiliser mix recommendation by combining other factors such as pH and solubility of each fertiliser, and other rules of thumb that consultants use.

Em diversas áreas de trabalho, da Engenharia à Economia, os problemas se apresentam como sendo multiobjetivos, característica que torna complexa a tomada de decisão. Geralmente, estes objetivos são conflitantes e faz-se necessário o uso de técnicas de otimização para a obtenção de melhores resultados. Na presente dissertação serão estudados alguns métodos para a resolução destes problemas, com o objetivo de aplicar métodos de aglutinação em problemas de projetos de experimentos com múltiplas respostas. Deste modo, inicialmente foi realizada uma análise bibliométrica sobre os diferentes métodos utilizados para a resolução destes problemas. A partir disto, foi desenvolvida uma nova abordagem, utilizando a Programação por Compromisso (compromise programming – CP) e a Programação por Metas (Goal programming – GP), bem como diferentes algoritmos (Gradiente Reduzido Generalizado – GRG e a metaheurística do software Optquest) que são usualmente adotados, com comparação de resultados e análise. De modo geral, esta nova proposta apresentou resultados melhores em relação à abordagem tradicional (desirability), qualificando este procedimento como uma alternativa na otimização de múltiplas *** many areas, from Engineering to Economics, problems present themselves as multiobjective, which makes a decision-making process complex. A Multi-Objective Perspective to Satellite Design and Reliability Optimization

Development of a communication satellite project is highly complicated and expensive which costs a few hundred million dollars depending on the mission in space. Once a satellite is launched into orbit, it has to operate in harsh environmental conditions including radiation, solar activity, meteorites, and extreme weather patterns. Since there is no possibility of physical maintenance intervention in space, reliability is a critical attribute for all space and satellite projects. Therefore, the redundancy philosophy and reliability measures are taken into account in the design phase of a satellite to prevent the loss of functionality in case of a failure in orbit. This study aims to optimize the payload design of a communication satellite by considering the system's reliability, power consumption and cost simultaneously. Since these objectives are conflicting in their nature, a multi-objective optimization approach is proposed. We offer a systematic approach to the satellite design by determining the best redundancy strategy considering contradictory objectives and onboard constraints in the multibillion-dollar satellite industry. The proposed approach promotes trade-offs and sensitivity analyses between cost, power consumption and system reliability in the early design phase of satellites using compromise programming. By using different sets of weights for the objectives in our model, it is possible to address different types of satellites depending on their mission and priorities. Because of the NP-Hard characteristics of the reliability optimization problem and the nonlinear equation in the proposed model, the Simulated Annealing algorithm is utilized to solve the problem. As a case analysis, the implementation is carried out on the design of a communication satellite system with active hot-standby and warm-standby onboard redundancy schemes. Bi-objective aggregate production planning for managing plan stability

Uncertainties in demand causes recurrent changes and revisions in a production plan, which may create anxiety in organizations and a state of instability throughout the supply chain. This study proposes a bi-objective aggregate production planning model (BO-APP), where plan stability is incorporated as a second objective alongside the traditional cost objective. The proposed BO-APP model is compared here to a classical single objective aggregate production planning model (APP) as well as to an alternate model called flexible re-quirements profile-based aggregate production planning model (FRP-APP), which aims to control plan stability by introducing dynamically changing bounds over the planning horizon. Numerical results on five industry-based cases show that both the BO-APP and FRP-APP models consistently generate plans with significantly less vari-ability compared to the traditional APP model, while resulting in comparable planning costs. In addition, the BO-APP shows a better cost and stability performance combination, while the FRP-APP seems to give more flexibility to the planners for controlling the stability level.

A sustainability-oriented framework for the application of industrial byproducts to the base layers of low-volume roads

Roadway engineering works typically rely on the utilization of natural aggregates as building materials. However, growing pressures for sustainable roads are highlighting the importance of replacing virgin materials with industrial byproducts. Constructors worldwide are trying to select optimum soil byproduct mixtures that have a fair trade-off between engineering properties, environmental impacts and material costs. This requires a multi-objective analysis to explore feasible mixtures that honor a set of preferences to mathematically identify the best compromised soil-byproduct mixture. In this paper, a sustainability-oriented framework is proposed for selecting optimum soil-byproduct proportions for unbound base layers of unpaved roads. A compromise programming tool is implemented to select a mixture that is statistically preferred over mixtures with different byproduct contents. The method is illustrated using technical, economic and environmental indicators that are easily measurable. Investigations are performed for different decision-making perspectives including the constructor's, contractor's and the environment's viewpoints. Two byproducts from the steel industry are mixed in different proportions from 50% to 80% by weight with a clayey soil. The optimum mixture was obtained at a proportion of 70% byproduct and 30% clay. Monte Carlo simulations and sensitivity analysis of transport scenarios further supported this conclusion. Results demonstrate that mixture selection based only on strength properties provides inadequate optimum from a sustainable standpoint. The proposed framework can help road constructors incorporate environmentally-friendly materials in a cost-effective way, while maintaining the technical quality of base layers. Evaluating the Multi-Functionality of Forest Ecosystems in Northern Mexico

Managing multiple ecosystem services is a complex task that involves special interactions among different resources, services, and stakeholders. Mexican forests have been traditionally managed for the single purpose of obtaining wood, benefiting a small sector of society. In this study, we evaluated the interactions among various ecosystem services, namely carbon content, tree diversity, surface water runoff, and the net present value of timber production. We also attempted to determine the most suitable basal area level that best satisfies the management of these services combined. Bivariate correlations, non-linear regression models, and a multiobjective decision-making technique are used to analyze the data in the study. Results indicate that trade-offs exist between surface water runoff and tree basal area. A synergistic relationship, between net present value and carbon content with basal area, was also observed. Tree diversity has a synergistic relationship with basal area in open forests, but a trade-off relationship in denser forests. The most preferred forest management level that satisfies the desired ecosystem services is between 17 and 21 m(2)/ha of residual basal area. We hope that adopting this multiobjective study can cement collaborative strategies among Mexican resource managers, landowners, environmental groups, and others interested in forest management.

Suitability of different precipitation data sources for hydrological analysis: a study from Western Ghats, India

For hydrological analysis, it is essential to have continuous and long-term precipitation data. However, the precipitation data from rain gauge stations are often insufficient and not continuous. At present, ground-based gridded data and satellite-based gridded data are often used as an alternative. However, these data sets have to be evaluated for their suitability in hydrological studies. The current study compared three different rainfall data sources with the observed station data for the Kallada River basin of Kerala, India. The ground-based gridded rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the high-resolution satellite product Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM 3B43, version 7), and the reanalysis data Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) are used in the analysis. The correlation coefficient, normalized root mean square error, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, modified index of agreement, and volumetric efficiency are used as performance indicators. The performance indicator's weights are based on the entropy method. The multi-criteria decision-making techniques like compromise programming and Preference Ranking Organization Method (PROMETHEE II) are used for ranking the precipitation data sources. It is found that IMD ground-based gridded data is ranked 1 among the three data sets. The IMD ground-based gridded data are not homogeneous based on the absolute homogeneity test, even though they had the highest rank. The IMD gridded data are further corrected based on double mass curve analysis. The corrected data were analyzed using the precipitation concentration index (PCI) to assess the temporal variation in precipitation, and it was found that the location falls under a uniform distribution zone.

Global climate models (GCMs) of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) has designed with new socioeconomic pathway scenarios to incorporate the socioeconomic changes along with greenhouse gas emissions to project future climate. Performance of 35 GCMs of CMIP6 was evaluated in this study in replicating APHRODITE rainfall in the Mainland South-East Asia (MSEA) for the period 1975?2014. compromised programming (CP) based on four spatial statistical metrics were used for the ranking of the GCMs and Jenk?s natural break classification was employed to find the most suitable subset of GCMs for MSEA. The results showed that majority of CMIP6 GCMs can capture the rainfall climatological of MSEA. The performance of the GCMs was different in terms of different metrics. Integration of all metrics using CP showed MRI-ESM2-0, EC-Earth3 and EC-Earth3-Veg as the most suitable subset of GCMs for rainfall projections in MSEA. The performance assessment of the selected GCMs revealed their ability to simulate the annual mean rainfall climatology in the central and southern region of MSEA with a bias less than 25%. Relatively higher biases (-25 to -75%) were noticed in the western coastal region of Myanmar where observed rainfall is the highest. The identified CMIP6 GCMs can be employed for climate change projections and impact assessments in MSEA after correcting the associated biases.
