A computation scheme based on field attenuation rate for improving regional-residual separation of potential field data set

To further improve the accuracy of regional-residual separation of potential field data set, this paper presents a novel computation scheme based on different attenuation rate of the fields induced from deep and shallow sources respectively. For the new scheme, the observations are first upward continued to a plane above it to get an updated field. Then, the difference between the original field and the updated field is calculated. Next, a controlling parameter is set to select those data points whose amplitudes have been much reduced. The adverse effects from the residual anomalies on the fitting of the regional trend can be reduced by removing the identified local points from the original field. Finally, a low-order polynomial is utilised for approximating the regional trend, and the corresponding residual field can be obtained by simple subtraction. Compared with gradient-based methods, the proposed new scheme has better noise adaptability for distinguishing different anomalies. The accuracy of the presented scheme was tested on synthetic data with and without noise. All tests showed that the new scheme reduces subjectivity and inaccuracy of the conventional methods significantly. In addition, the scheme was applied to Bouguer gravity anomaly of the Dida orebodies in Jilin Province, northeast China. This application also verified the superiority of the proposed scheme.

A computationally efficient scheme for the inversion of large scale potential field data: Application to synthetic and real data

Three dimensional (3D) inversion of potential field data from large scale surveys attempts to recover density or magnetic susceptibility distribution in the subspace for geological interpretation. It is computationally challenging and is not feasible on desktop computers. We propose an integrated scheme to address this problem. We adopt adaptive sampling to compress the dataset, and the cross curve of the data compression ratio and correlation coefficient between the initial and sampled data is used to choose the damping factor for adaptive sampling. Then, the conventional inversion algorithm in model space is transformed to data space, using the identity relationship between different matrices, which greatly reduces the memory requirement. Finally, parallel computation is employed to accelerate calculation of the kernel function. We use the conjugate gradient method to minimize the objective function and a damping factor is introduced to stabilize the iterative process. A wide variety of constraint options are also considered, such as depth weighing, sparseness, and boundary limits. We design a synthetic magnetic model with three prismatic susceptibility causative bodies to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Tests on synthetic data show that the proposed scheme provides significant reduction in memory and time consumption, and the inversion result is reliable. These advantages hold true for practical field magnetic data from the Hawsons mining area in Australia, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable the collection of physical measurements over a large geographic area. It is often the case that the authors are interested in computing and tracking the spatial-average of a function of the sensor measurements over a region covered by the WSN. Unfortunately, conventional methods need a large number of channel uses for collecting sensor data in the case of a large amount of sensors. They propose a novel computation scheme over fading multiple-access channels based on the asymptotic free behaviour of random matrices and the property of limit spectrum distribution of random matrices. The proposed scheme can greatly reduce the channel uses and does not need channel estimation. Moreover, the performance evaluations over multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and MIMO-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system demonstrate that the proposed method offers reliable mean computation of common functions of sensor data even for the case of small sample sizes.

This paper introduces the theoretical background of the thermal functional garment design and some specific structures are designed for the computation simulation. A self-adaptive computation scheme is designed to simulate the performance of functional properties of the designed garments.

Calculating unreported confidence intervals for paired data

Background: Confidence intervals (or associated standard errors) facilitate assessment of the practical importance of the findings of a health study, and their incorporation into a meta-analysis. For paired design studies, these items are often not reported. Since the descriptive statistics for such studies are usually presented in the same way as for unpaired designs, direct computation of the standard error is not possible without additional information. Methods: Elementary, well-known relationships between standard errors and p-values were used to develop computation schemes for paired mean difference, risk difference, risk ratio and odds ratio. Results: Unreported confidence intervals for large sample paired binary and numeric data can be computed fairly accurately using simple methods provided the p-value is given. In the case of paired binary data, the design based 2 x 2 table can be reconstructed as well. Conclusions: Our results will facilitate appropriate interpretation of paired design studies, and their incorporation into meta-analyses.

This paper gives a concise description of a solution approach to the problem of output feedback control under unknown but bounded disturbances. It is based on combining dynamic programming with set-valued techniques and ranges from theoretical schemes to computational routes which indicate the possibility of treating the overall problem through finite-dimensional techniques. The results apply to nonlinear systems with more details for the linear case.

A multi-step computation scheme: Decoupling kinetic processes from physical transport in water quality models

This paper presents a computation scheme that considers accuracy and efficiency in the numerical treatment of the kinetic processes in water quality models. The proposed scheme involves decoupling of physical transport and kinetic processes in the governing mass-balance equations. The decoupled equations are solved by employing multi-step computation, in which the kinetic processes are applied for the first half time step, followed by the physical transport for a full time step, and the kinetic processes are applied again for the remaining second half time step. The kinetic equations are solved numerically or analytically, which may require prior linearization of the equations. The numerical solution scheme of the kinetic equations alternates between explicit and implicit schemes, and is equivalent to the second-order accurate Crank-Nicolson solution. A hypothetical model, which is simple enough to have an analytical solution, is used to explain the concept, and to demonstrate the accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme and three other traditional solution schemes are compared to the analytical solution.
