StatuScale: Status-aware and Elastic Scaling Strategy for Microservice Applications

Microservice architecture has transformed traditional monolithic applications into lightweight components. Scaling these lightweight microservices is more efficient than scaling servers. However, scaling microservices still faces the challenges resulted from the unexpected spikes or bursts of requests, which are difficult to detect and can degrade performance instantaneously. To address this challenge and ensure the performance of microservice-based applications, we propose a status-aware and elastic scaling framework called StatuScale, which is based on load status detector that can select appropriate elastic scaling strategies for differentiated resource scheduling in vertical scaling. Additionally, StatuScale employs a horizontal scaling controller that utilizes comprehensive evaluation and resource reduction to manage the number of replicas for each microservice. We also present a novel metric named correlation factor to evaluate the resource usage efficiency. Finally, we use Kubernetes, an open-source container orchestration and management platform, and realistic traces from Alibaba to validate our approach. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed framework can reduce the average response time in the Sock-Shop application by 8.59% to 12.34%, and in the Hotel-Reservation application by 7.30% to 11.97%, decrease service level objective violations, and offer better performance in resource usage compared to baselines. © 2024, CC BY.

In this proceedings contribution I review recent work which computes the suppression of bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions using open quantum systems methods applied within the potential non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (pNRQCD) effective field theory. I discuss how the computation of bottomonium suppression can be reduced to solving a Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad (GKSL) quantum master equation for the evolution of the bb¯ reduced density matrix. The used open quantum systems approach allows one to take into account the non-equilibrium dynamics and decoherence of bottomonium in the quark–gluon plasma. Finally, I present comparisons of phenomenological predictions obtained using a recently obtained next-to-leading-order GKSL equation with ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS experimental data for bottomonium suppression and elliptic flow. © 2023 Jagellonian University. We develop a high-throughput computational scheme based on cluster multipole theory to identify new functional antiferromagnets. This approach is applied to 228 magnetic compounds listed in the AtomWork-Adv database, known for their elevated Néel temperatures. We conduct systematic investigations of both stable and metastable magnetic configurations of these materials. Our findings reveal that 34 of these compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic structures with zero propagation vectors and magnetic symmetries identical to conventional ferromagnets, rendering them potentially invaluable for spintronics applications. By cross-referencing our predictions with the existing MAGNDATA database and published literature, we verify the reliability of our findings for 26 out of 28 compounds with partially or fully elucidated magnetic structures in the experiments. These results not only affirm the reliability of our scheme but also point to its potential for broader applicability in the ongoing quest for the discovery of new functional magnets. © 2024, CC BY.

Using this, we show that the log canonical threshold of a convergent complex power series is at most 1/c, where (c, ..., c) is a point on a facet of its Newton polyhedron. Moreover, in the case n = 2, if the power series is weakly normalised with respect to this facet or the point (c, c) belongs to two facets, then we have equality. We perform a nonperturbative calculation of the shear viscosity for (2 + 1)-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory by using the lattice Hamiltonian formulation. The retarded Green’s function of the stress-energy tensor is calculated from real time evolution via exact diagonalization of the lattice Hamiltonian with a local Hilbert space truncation, and the shear viscosity is obtained via the Kubo formula. When taking the continuum limit, we account for the renormalization group flow of the coupling but no additional operator renormalization. We find the ratio of the shear viscosity and the entropy density η/s is consistent with a well-known holographic result 1/4π at several temperatures on a 4 × 4 honeycomb lattice with the local electric representation truncated at jmax = 1/2. We also find the ratio of the spectral function and frequency ρxy (ω)/ω exhibits a peak structure when the frequency is small. Both the exact diagonalization method and simple matrix product state classical simulation method beyond jmax = 1/2 on bigger lattices require exponentially growing resources. So we develop a quantum computing method to calculate the retarded Green’s function and analyze various systematics of the calculation including jmax truncation and finite size effects, Trotter errors and the thermal state preparation efficiency. Our thermal state preparation method still requires resources that grow exponentially with the lattice size, but with a very small prefactor at high temperature. We test our quantum circuit on both the Quantinuum emulator and the IBM simulator for a small lattice and obtain results consistent with the classical computing ones. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Spin-orbit torque can drive auto-oscillations of propagating spin wave (PSW) modes in nano-constriction spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs). These modes allow both long-range coupling and the potential of controlling its phase—critical aspect for nano-magnonics, spin wave logic, and Ising machines. Here, we demonstrate PSW-driven variable-phase coupling between two nano-constriction SHNOs and study how their separation and the PSW wave vector impact their mutual synchronization. In addition to ordinary in-phase mutual synchronization, we observe, using both electrical measurements and phase-resolved µ−Brillouin Light Scattering microscopy, mutual synchronization with a phase that can be tuned from 0 to π using the drive current or the applied field. Micromagnetic simulations corroborate the experiments and visualize how the PSW patterns in the bridge connecting the two nano-constrictions govern the coupling. These results advance the capabilities of mutually synchronized SHNOs and open up new possibilities for applications in spin wave logic, unconventional computing, and Ising Machines. © 2024, CC BY.

Information theory has provided foundations for the theories of several application areas critical for modern society, including communications, computer storage, and AI. A key aspect of Shannon's 1948 theory is a sharp lower bound on the number of bits needed to encode and communicate a string of symbols. When he introduced the theory, Shannon famously excluded any notion of semantics behind the symbols being communicated. This semantics-free notion went on to have massive impact on communication and computing technologies, even as multiple proposals for reintroducing semantics in a theory of information were being made, notably one where Carnap and Bar-Hillel used logic and reasoning to capture semantics. In this paper we present, for the first time, a Shannon-style analysis of a communication system equipped with a deductive reasoning capability, implemented using logical inference. We use some of the most important techniques developed in information theory to demonstrate significant and sometimes surprising gains in communication efficiency availed to us through such capability, demonstrated also through practical codes. We thus argue that proposals for a semantic information theory should include the power of deductive reasoning to magnify the value of transmitted bits as we strive to fully unlock the inherent potential of semantics. © 2024, CC BY.
