Aligning block permutation methods for topology transformation on computational grids

Many traditional parallel matrix computing algorithms are performed on regular resource topologies, such as mesh. However, the grid resource topology is often irregular in practice. In this paper, we present a transformation algorithm of grid resource topology for achieving virtual meshes. And on the virtual mesh, these traditional parallel algorithms can be performed in a modern computational grid environment. The basic idea of our topology transformation is to align the basic blocks of grid computational resources through permutations in a virtual mesh. Designing a cost function of heuristic search scheme for the transformation, we use it to fully exploit the computational and communicational abilities of grid resources. The experiment results show that our aligning block permutation can significantly reduce the time complexity of search tree. They also show that the heuristic search scheme can effectively find the block permutation that makes better use of computational and communicational abilities of grid resources.

Computing in financial services consists of a combination of time-critical computations completed during trading hours, such as Monte Carlo simulations for option pricing, and over-night calculations on massive data sets, such as those required for market risk measurement. To date, this has typically been done using traditional parallel or cluster computing techniques. The French National Research Agency (ANR), along with several banks and financial software companies have partnered with INRIA to explore the application of grid computing to this domain. The Picsougrid project utilizes the ProActive Java distributed computing library to parallelize and distribute Monte Carlo option pricing simulations, concurrently utilizing 102-103 workers. Picsougrid has been deployed on various grid systems to evaluate its scalability and performance. Issues arising from the heterogeneity and layering of grid infrastructures are addressed via an abstract process model which is applied at each layer. Timings of both the algorithms and the grid infrastructures are carefully measured to provide better insight into the behavior and utilization of computational grids for this important class of parallel simulations.

Scheduling Jobs in Face of Status Update Timing of Resources in computational grids

Users and resources frequently join and leave computational grid, hence the state of the grid changes dynamically. So, an effective job scheduling strategy is needed that consider the dynamically changed conditions in the grid. Most of the existing scheduling strategies are mainly based on selecting resources that have less resource response time or less grid bandwidth while these resources may be out of date at the scheduling time. This paper proposes a scheduling strategy with the objective of minimizing the effects of grid dynamism on the grid performance. The strategy schedules jobs to the resources according to status update timing combined with response time of the resources. The proposed strategy is compared with the time-based strategy in terms of the number of jobs executed successfully within the specified deadline and the makespan of user applications. Experimental results have shown that the proposed strategy can considerably improve the performance of the grid.

grid computing is an exciting development which promises to be the enabling technology for many users with periodic requirements for massive computing power. There are a number of grid computing infrastructures available which are fully featured, powerful, efficient and secure. However, for novice users, these systems are not easy to setup and use which presents a significant barrier to their adoption. M-grid offers an alternative approach which permits the creation of a computational grid able to accept tasks from any user with access to the web and distribute them to machines running standard a web browser without any security implications.

Two key components contribute to task completion time: execution cost and communication cost. The communication cost is induced by data transfers from one task to another residing on separate nodes. To reduce communication cost, interdependent tasks are allocated to closely located nodes. However, once tasks are allocated, nodes can move within a grid. The node mobility within a grid can increase communication distance and may result into multi-hop communication between nodes executing dependent tasks. The multi-hop communication increases communication cost and thus task completion time. In order to avoid multi-hop communication between dependent tasks, we have developed an adaptive and distance-based resource allocation scheme which exploits the characteristics of an application and nodes, and applies migration heuristics to reduce communication cost. The scheme is validated in a simulated environment using various workloads and parameters.

Cross-layer optimization policy for QoS scheduling in computational grid

This paper presents a cross-layer quality of service (QoS) optimization policy for computational grid. Efficient QoS management is critical for computational grid to meet heterogeneity and dynamics of resources and users' requirements. There are different QoS metrics at different layers of computational grid. To improve perceived QoS by end users over computational grid, QoS supports can be addressed in different layers, including application layer, collective layer, fabric layer and so Forth. The paper tackles cross-layer grid QoS optimization as optimization decomposition, each layer corresponds to a decomposed subproblem. The proposed policy produces an optimal set of grid resources, service compositions and user's payments at the fabric layer, collective layer and application layer respectively to maximize global grid QoS. The cross-layer optimization problem decomposes into three subproblems: grid resource allocation problem, service composing and user satisfaction degree maximization problem, all of which interact through the optimal variables for capacities of grid resources and service demand. In order to coordinate the subproblems, cross-layer QoS feedback mechanism is established to ensure different layer interactions. Multi-level hierarchic genetic-based scheduling of independent jobs in dynamic heterogeneous grid environment

Task scheduling and resource allocation are the key rationale behind the computational grid. Distributed resource clusters usually work in different autonomous domains with their own access and security policies that have a great impact on the successful task execution across the domain boundaries. Heuristics and metaheuristics are the effective technologies for scheduling in grids due to their ability to deliver high quality solutions in reasonable time. In this paper, we develop a Hierarchic Genetic Scheduler (HGS-Sched) for improving the effectiveness of the single-population genetic-based schedulers in the dynamic grid environment. The HGS-Sched enables a concurrent exploration of the solution space by many small dependent populations. We consider a bi-objective independent batch job scheduling problem with makespan and flowtime minimized in hierarchical mode (makespan is a dominant criterion). The empirical results show the high effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with the mono-population and hybrid genetic-based schedulers. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Scheduling and resource allocation in large scale distributed environments, such as computational grids (CGs), arise new requirements and challenges not considered in traditional distributed computing environments. Among these new requirements, task abortion and security become needful criteria for grid schedulers. The former arises due to the dynamics of the grid systems, in which resources are expected to enter and leave the system in an unpredictable way. The latter requirement appears crucial in grid systems mainly due to a multi-domain nature of CGs. The main aim of this paper is to develop a scheduling model that enables the aggregation of task abortion and security requirements as additional, together with makespan and flowtime, scheduling criteria into a cumulative objective function. We demonstrate the high effectiveness of genetic-based schedulers in finding near-optimal solutions for multi-objective scheduling problem, where all criteria (objectives) are simultaneously optimized. The proposed metaheuristics are experimentally evaluated in static and dynamic grid scenarios by using a grid simulator. The obtained results show the fast reduction of the values of basic scheduler performance metrics, especially in the dynamic case, that confirms the usefulness of the proposed approach in real-life scenarios. Nowadays there is need to share the knowledge and collaboration with group of people with same interest because people and information which they want to access both is geographically distributed. Information technology plays a major role in the future of education, as they break geographical barriers and make educational content widely available. Knowledge collaboration is possible by creating virtual classrooms by interconnecting lecturers to geographically scattered students. Making educational material, such as tutorials and recorded lectures, available worldwide through high-storage infrastructures. Digitalizing and making books available through high-storage infrastructures. But this E-learning system requires huge investment for high-storage infrastructure. Some educational organizations and research institutes cannot afford expensive investments. On the other hand, in most of the organizations, there are large amounts of underutilized computing power and storage existing. Data grid connects underutilized secondary storage of machines and provides huge secondary storage. It enables resource sharing among the geographically distributed users and resources. Therefore the institutes which do not have sufficient budget can make use of Data grid efficiently. In this paper we have presented that how grid computing can be used for inexpensive collaborative E-learning. Data replication increases availability, reliability of data and allows fast access to data. Replication reduces bandwidth consumption and congestion over communication line. Therefore replication is the major issue in Data grid. Replication strategies determine when and where to create a replica of the data. A good replication strategy should ideally minimize file access time, reduce network congestion and minimize job execution time to improve performance of Data grid. This paper investigates the interactions among Agents representing users, services and resources to solve resource allocation optimization in computational grid. Double level market model is proposed to solve the grid resource allocation optimization i.e. grid user Agent with grid service Agent in service market and grid service Agent with grid resource Agent in resource market. In order to reduce the computational complexity, the allocation optimization is decomposed into sub problems solved at resource market and service market respectively. Two sub problems at two market levels converge to their optimal points;a globally optimal point can be obtained.
