Man-portable Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) have been fielded on the battlefield with limited computing power. This limitation constrains their use primarily to teleoperation control mode for clearing areas and bomb defusing. In order to extend their capability to include the reconnaissance and surveillance missions of dismounted soldiers, a separate processing payload is desired. This paper presents a processing architecture and the design details on the payload module that enables the PackBot to perform sophisticated, real-time image processing algorithms using data collected from its onboard imaging sensors including LADAR, IMU, visible, IR, stereo, and the Ladybug spherical cameras. The entire payload is constructed from currently available Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components including an Intel multi-core CPU and a Nvidia GPU. The result of this work enables a small UGV to perform computationally expensive image processing tasks that once were only feasible on a large workstation.

This paper presents a computational architecture to facilitate autonomous decision-making under uncertainty for safe operation of drone-like vehicles. The proposed framework is based on identifying and predicting the occurrence of various risk-factors that affect the safe operation of such vehicles and estimating the likelihood of occurrence of these risk-factors. This analysis is then used to select trajectories for the operation of the vehicle. Feasible trajectories are classified into four different categories: nominal and safe, off-nominal but safe, unsafe and abort the mission, and unsafe and ditch the vehicle. An important challenge in the operation of drones is that there are several sources of uncertainty that affect their operation;these sources of uncertainty arise from wind conditions, imprecise future power-demands, inexact future trajectories, etc. Therefore, it is important to develop a decision-making framework that can incorporate all these sources of uncertainty and make decisions that are robust to the presence of such uncertainty. Potential risk-factors such as dynamic obstacles, battery drain, etc. are identified and the likelihood of occurrence of these risk-factors are predicted preemptively and proactively in order to facilitate risk-informed safety-assured decision-making.

How we talk(ed) about it: Ways of speaking about computational architecture

If we understand architecture as a three-part system formed by the building, its image, or drawings and images describing buildings, and the critical discourse around architecture, then the texts or ways of speaking about architecture play a key role in understanding the field and its development. By analysing a corpus of around 4.6 million words from texts written between 2005 and 2020 that form a part of critical discourse in computational architecture (understood as the result of the intense digitalization of the field), this paper aims to map ways of speaking about computational architecture. This contributes to architectural theory and might help gain a better understanding of the evolution of the digitalization of construction in general. Findings show that computational architecture is surrounded by a specific way of speaking, hybridized with words from fields such as biology, neuroscience, arts and humanities, and engineering. While some topics such as 'sustainability' or 'biology' come up consistently in the discourse, others, such as 'people' or 'human', have periods when they are more and less popular. After highlighting open research questions, the paper concludes by presenting a map of periodic and recurring topics in ways of speaking about computational architecture over the last 15 years, thus tracking and documenting long-term trends, and illuminating patterns in the broader field of digital construction.

In this paper we consider the interactive processes by which an explainer and an explainee cooperate to produce an explanation, which we refer to as co-construction. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is concerned with the development of intelligent systems and robots that can explain and justify their actions, decisions, recommendations, and so on. However, the cooperative construction of explanations remains a key but under-explored issue. This short paper proposes an architecture for intelligent systems that promotes a co-constructive and interactive approach to explanation generation. By outlining its basic components and their specific roles, we aim to contribute to the advancement of XAI computational frameworks that actively engage users in the explanation process.

This thesis aims at understanding alterations in the conceptualization of design intentionality in relation to technological advances that bring new synthetic configurations to the world of design. The concept of intentionality used to be defined as central to human consciousness hence design intention regarded as exclusive to the human mind. The contemporary technological/ontological condition seems to displace this conceptualization of design intentionality sustained in conventional design processes, to think of design intentionality as embedded within computational agents through continuous feedbacks from designers, and reciprocally, designers' intentionality is altered and expanded as a reflection of the emergent outputs from the computational world. computational processes and their objects of design exhibiting the 'emergent', 'unpredictable' qualities are then expected to become accessible to the human mind by the formation of nested processes of interchanges between designers and computational agents. This study introduces the concept of 'agency' which brings a critical approach to the anthropocentric view on design intentionality by shifting the focus from the human towards distributed models and hybrid constellations including both human and nonhuman for a reconceptualization of design intentionality and the possibilities for its augmentation. To acknowledge the changing roles of the human and the nonhuman in the design process, this thesis postulates an 'agentic' reading towards intentionality. Such reading allows the concepts of design intentionality and emergence to be reconciled by a breakdown of the structures of intentionality into the notions of 'design agency' and 'design action' and dissolves the either-or-condition that appears to be a polarity between human-centered and techno-centered approaches.

Topological interlocking assembly (TIA) and computational architecture treat form as an emergent property of a material system, where the final shape results from the interplay of geometries and geometric interdependencies influenced by contextual constraints (material, structure, and fabrication). This paper posits that TIA is an ideal pedagogical tool for introducing students to computational architecture, and its theoretical foundations and design principles. Specifically, defining TIA as a material system provides a robust educational approach for engaging students with computation;fostering design processes through bottom-up, hands-on investigations;expressing design intents as procedural logic;understanding generative geometric rules;and exploring the flexibility of parametric variations. The methodology is detailed and illustrated through a design workshop and study unit from the Bachelor's and Master's programs at the Faculty for the Built Environment, University of Malta. Four case studies of TIA-of tetrahedra, cones, octahedra, and osteomorphic blocks-demonstrate how these exercises introduce students to computational thinking, parametric design, and fabrication techniques. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of this pedagogical methodology, concluding that integrating computational architecture in education shifts students' design processes to investigation and innovation-based approaches, enabling them to address contemporary design challenges through context-driven solutions.

Moral considerability of brain organoids from the perspective of computational architecture

Human brain organoids equipped with complex cytoarchitecture and closed-loop feedback from virtual environments could provide insights into neural mechanisms underlying cognition. Yet organoids with certain cognitive capacities might also merit moral consideration. A precautionary approach has been proposed to address these ethical concerns by focusing on the epistemological question of whether organoids possess neural structures for morally-relevant capacities that bear resemblance to those found in human brains. Critics challenge this approach on philosophical, scientific, and practical grounds but do so without a suitable alternative. Here, I introduce an approach that infers the potential for cognitive-like processing in brain organoids based on the pattern of information flow through the system. The kind of computational architecture acquired by an organoid then informs the kind of cognitive capacities that could, theoretically, be supported and empirically investigated. The implications of this approach for the moral considerability of brain organoids are discussed.

The design of healthcare facilities involves the complex system in various spatial and temporal dimensions;it involves a wide range of functions, different kinds of users and activities, and various technical requirements. Understanding the complexity in healthcare facilities becomes important in order to ensure that the design could perform well to support healthcare services. This paper discusses the current development of computational tools in healthcare architectural design. The emergence of computational medium in architecture provides new possibilities in analyzing and understanding the complexities within the system of healthcare facilities. The computational medium could play an important role in the spatial analysis of healthcare design, particularly as the medium of representation, visualization and simulation. This paper illustrates the development of some visualization and simulation tools that could assist in understanding some aspects of spatial configuration of healthcare design, such as visibility and movement. The use of the tools could assist the analysis of spatial configuration of the healthcare facilities in order to optimize the performance of the spaces. The dynamic of computational medium provides a new dimension in understanding the complex system from multiple perspectives that can be used to provide feedback for future design of healthcare facilities.

This article presents a proposal for a computational model for organizational learning in R&D centers. We explained the first stage of this architecture that enables extracting, retrieval and integrating of lessons learned in the areas of innovation and technological development that have been registered by R&D researchers and personnel in social networks corporative focused to research. In addition, this article provides details about the design and construction of organizational memory as a computational learning mechanism within an organization. The end result of the process is purged information on lessons learned that can serve to support decision-making or strategic analysis to establish patterns, trends, and behaviors with respect to the roadmaps of the R&D center's strategic and operational plans.

Could robots become authentic companions in nursing care?

Creating android and humanoid robots to furnish companionship in the nursing care of older people continues to attract substantial development capital and research. Some people object, though, that machines of this kind furnish human-robot interaction characterized by inauthentic relationships. In particular, robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have been charged with substituting mindless mimicry of human behaviour for the real presence of conscious caring offered by human nurses. When thus viewed as deceptive, the robots also have prompted corresponding concerns regarding their potential psychological, moral, and spiritual implications for people who will be interacting socially with these machines. The foregoing objections and concerns can be assessed quite differently, depending upon ambient religious beliefs or metaphysical presuppositions. The complaints may be set aside as unnecessary, for example, within religious traditions for which even current robots can be viewed as presenting spiritual aspects. Elsewhere, technological cultures may reject the complaints as expression of outdated superstition, holding that the machines eventually will enjoy a consciousness described entirely in materialist and behaviourist terms. While recognizing such assessments, the authors of this essay propose that the heart of the foregoing objections and concerns may be evaluated, in part, scientifically - albeit with a conclusion recommending fundamental revisions in AI modelling of human mental life. Specifically, considerations now favour introduction of AI models using interactive classical and quantum computation. Without this change, the answer to the essay's title question arguably is 'no' - with it, the answer plausibly becomes 'maybe'. Either outcome holds very interesting implications for nurses.
