A reduced-complexity image coding scheme using decision-directed wavelet-based contourlet transform

Recently the wavelet-based contourlet transform (WBCT) is adopted for image coding because it matches better image textures of different orientations. However, its computational complexity is very high. In this paper, we propose three tools to enhance the WBCT coding scheme, in particular, on reducing its computational complexity. First, we propose short-length 2-D filters for directional transform. Second, the directional transform is applied to only a few selected subbands and the selection is done by a mean-shift-based decision procedure. Third, we fine-tune the context tables used by the arithmetic coder in WBCT coding to improve coding efficiency and to reduce computation. Simulations show that, at comparable coded image quality, the proposed scheme saves over 92% computing time of the original WBCT scheme. Comparing to the conventional 2-D wavelet coding schemes, it produces clearly better subjective image quality. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A differential evolution (DE)-based partial transmit sequence (PTS) scheme for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems has been proposed. PTS techniques can improve the PAPR statistics of an OFDM signals, but the considerable computational complexity for the required search through a high-dimensional vector space is a potential problem for the implementation in practical systems. The DE is an efficient and powerful population-based stochastic search technique for solving optimisation problems over continuous space, which has been widely applied in many scientific and engineering fields. Thus, to reduce the complexity for searching phase weight vector and to improve the PAPR statistics, the authors introduce DE, to search the optimal phase weight factors. The simulation results show that the proposed DE-based PTS obtains an excellent PAPR performance with a low computational complexity.

A faster computational method for performing frequency domain independent component analysis (FDICA) using a dodecahedral microphone array is proposed. Source separation with FDICA uses the spectrum of observed signals and estimates separation filters for each frequency. However, this technique is complex and requires high computational resources. In this paper, a method of selecting temporal frames which are effective for training the separation filters is proposed and evaluated. The log power spectrum and the kurtosis of amplitude distribution are employed as selection criteria. Performance was evaluated by comparing signal-to-interference performance with that of the conventional method. Experimental results showed that the proposed method reduced computation to 17.1 % of that required by the conventional method, and that separation performance of the proposed method is superior. Therefore, the proposed method can achieve faster computation with lower computational complexity, and its effectiveness can be confirmed.

This paper proposes a distributed vehicle state estimation system to improve the performance of vehicle positioning using Global Positioning System (GPS) and in- vehicle sensor components. The distributed architecture of the estimation system can reduce the computational complexity of high- order estimation by dividing it into several small- order estimation modules, and simplifies fault detection and isolation problems. The distributed vehicle state estimation algorithm consists of three estimation modules. The first is a longitudinal vehicle state estimation module which estimates the longitudinal vehicle speed and road slope. The road slope estimate is used to compensate for the vertical speed on the sloped road. The second module is a lateral vehicle state estimator which estimates yaw rate, yaw, and side slip angle using an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) filter. The last is a position estimation module which integrates the vehicle states from the previous two modules with GPS data to obtain more accurate position information. The proposed estimation algorithm was verified through simulation with the aid of a commercial vehicle model. The results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

The importance of the emotion information in human speech has been growing in recent years due to increasing use of natural user interfacing in embedded systems. Speech-based human-machine communication has the advantage of a high degree of usability, but it need not be limited to speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities. Emotion recognition in uttered speech has been considered in this research to integrate a speech recognizer/synthesizer with the capacity to recognize and synthesize emotion. This paper describes a complete framework for recognizing and synthesizing emotional speech based on smart logic (fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks). Time-domain signal-processing algorithms has been applied to reduce computational complexity at the feature-extraction level. A fuzzy-logic engine was modeled to make inferences about the emotional content of the uttered speech. An artificial neural network was modeled to synthesize emotive speech. Both were designed to be integrated into an embedded handheld device that implements a speech-based natural user interface (NUI)

In this paper, efficient one-dimensional (1-D) fast integer transform algorithm of the DCT matrix for the H.265 standard is proposed. Based on the symmetric property of the integer transform matrix and the matrix operations, along with using the dyadic symmetry modification on the standard matrix, the efficient fast 1-D integer transform algorithm is developed. Therefore, the computational complexities of the proposed fast integer transform are smaller than those of the direct method. In addition to computational complexity reduction the proposed algorithms provides transformation quality improvement. With lower complexity and better transformation quality, the proposed fast algorithm is suitable to accelerate the quality-demanding video coding computations

In Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, catastrophic events are often caused by errors made by agents operating in the procedures. Detecting safety critical situations that may arise in the evolution of ATM systems is of primary importance in the analysis of their behavior. The inherent complexity of ATM systems, typically involving a large number of agents, makes this analysis prohibitive today. Compositionality has been an effective way of tackling this problem. We present a compositional hybrid systems framework to accurately describe the behavior of the agents operating in ATM scenarios and of their interaction. We then expose some results that reduce the computational effort required in detecting safety critical situations. Benefits from the use of this complexity reduction approach are illustrated using the analysis of the Airborne Separation-In Trail Procedure (ASEP-ITP).

An efficient algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of block matching motion estimation by using the characteristics of spatial correlation. The proposed algorithm is to skip the motion vector search of inside macroblocks surrounded by identical motion vectors. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces computational complexity by 52.5% compared to conventional motion estimation at the cost of negligible performance degradation.

The automatic sign language translation still is the most complex and challenging task for video recognition and processing. This work presents the Brazilian Sign Language Automatic Translation project and specifically focuses on low complexity Artificial Neural Networks dedicated to real-time video processing. A new approach for reducing the computational complexity of the activation function of the Multi-Layer Perceptron is proposed in this work, allowing complex processing of video signals be done in real-time. The low complexity neural networks are used in two stages of the system. In the color detection and hand posture classification blocks. The obtained results indicate an increase of the frame rate from 8.6 fps to 28.1 fps using a personal microcomputer with a USB webcam, without reduction of the correct recognition rate.
