Paper Mechatronics is a novel interdisciplinary design medium, enabled by recent advances in craft technologies: the term refers to a reappraisal of traditional papercraft in combination with accessible mechanical, electronic, and computational elements. I am investigating the design space of paper mechatronics as a new hands-on medium by developing a series of examples and building a computational tool, FoldMecha, to support non-experts to design and construct their own paper mechatronics models. This paper describes how I used the tool to create two kinds of paper mechatronics models: walkers and flowers and discuss next steps.

Folding mechanisms such as origami, linkages, or auxetic materials have found applications across a diverse range of fields, including architecture, product design, and robotics. On the other hand, waffle structure, namely planar section structure, is known as a type of static structure with stable load-bearing capabilities. In this paper, we transform these waffle structures into a foldable mechanism. We introduce "Fold It", a computational design tool that converts arbitrary closed brep or mesh into adaptable waffle structures with tunable folding parameters. Our tool democratizes the personal fabrication of these structures, facilitating the design of diverse everyday objects, ranging from toys to furniture. We hope Fold It could be used for creating more multifunctional objects within and beyond the DIY and personal fabrication arenas.

design by analogy, in which designers draw inspiration from cross-domain design solutions, is a promising methodology for product development. This work attempts to leverage the existing design solutions within a repository, combined with an exploration of inherent structural forms that can be discovered based on the content and similarity of that data, in order to gain useful insights into the nature of the design space. In this work, an approach combining Latent Semantic Analysis and Kemp and Tenenbaum's Bayesian inference based algorithm for discovering structural form will be applied to uncover structure in the U.S. patent database. Methodology for generating and analyzing these structures is presented here, in addition to insights from some initial results. These insights could generate fodder for stimulating design inspiration and innovation for engineering designers.
