A surrogate-based computational framework for optimizing thermal strategies in large multi-subsystem borehole heat exchanger sites

At large multi-subsystem borehole heat exchanger (BHE) sites, the overall thermal efficiency and heat production of the system can be significantly enhanced by optimizing the distribution of heating and cooling loads among subsystems, while honoring the technical operating parameters. However, practical factors such as heat regeneration, site-specific conditions, and complex BHE layouts complicate the optimization task. To address these challenges, this study proposes a surrogate-based computational framework designed to efficiently and globally optimize thermal strategies, including maximizing geothermal heat production and optimally distributing heat loads among subsystems. The proposed framework consists of two main components: surrogate model development and optimal thermal strategy search. As a demonstration, it is applied to an operational large BHE site. To efficiently generate training samples, a support vector classifier is used to refine the potential parameter space of thermal strategies. After obtaining sufficient samples, the support vector regressor is selected as the surrogate model, following a performance comparison with other regressors. These efficient mathematic techniques minimize computational costs while improving model prediction accuracy. Finally, by integrating a particle swarm optimization algorithm, the framework identifies the maximum allowable heat extraction for the study site and determines the thermal load configuration for each subsystem. By leveraging measured operational data, the computational framework considers critical site-specific factors such as groundwater flow, heat regeneration, and geological and hydrogeological stratigraphy, making it highly practical and adaptable. This approach ensures that the system operates efficiently and sustainably, offering a robust solution for managing complex BHE arrays within diverse real-world scenarios.

Improving the resilience of underground spaces and infrastructures is critical to enhance the safety and survivability of urban environments. The waterproofing capability of segment joints is crucial to the resilience of watertight tunnels, particularly under stringent conditions, such as ultrahigh water pressure (> 0.5 MPa) in underwater shield tunnels. The waterproofing structure of double gaskets has emerged as the preferred design choice. Numerical simulations offer significant advantages over traditional watertightness tests, providing a time-saving and labor-efficient means to directly assess the mechanical properties of gaskets and predict leakage behavior. However, existing simulation methods have various limitations. This paper presents improvements to the conventional mesh-to-mesh solution mapping (MSM) and fluid pressure penetration (FPP) method, including refining the convergence of the FPP method, optimizing mesh partitioning and stress mapping, and comprehensively analyzing multiple interface leaks. To validate the efficacy of the improved method, extensive comparisons were made with watertightness test results, including simulations of single gasket under 26 conditions with 5 gasket profiles. To address the limitations of the MSM + FPP method in predicting the waterproofing capacity of double gaskets, a computational framework for simulating and predicting the leakage of double gaskets is proposed. Through rigorous validation with watertightness test results involving simulations of 16 conditions with 4 double gasket combinations, the accuracy and reliability of the proposed framework were demonstrated. The enhancement in the waterproofing capacity of the double gaskets was theoretically analyzed, and a sealing growth coefficient for the double gaskets was proposed. Deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to chloride ingress followed by reinforcement corrosion is a serious problem all over the world, therefore prediction of chloride profiles is a key element in evaluating durability and integrity of RC structures exposed to chloride environment. In the present paper, an integrated finite element-based computational framework is developed for predicting service life of RC structures exposed to chloride environment, which takes environment temperature and humidity fluctuations, diffusion and convection, chloride binding, as well as the decay of durability of structures caused by coupled deterioration processes into account. The decay of RC structures due to environment loadings and service loadings is considered in a Coupled thermo-hygromechanical model. Based on the conservation of energy and mass, the governing equations of heat transfer, moisture transport and chloride ingress into partially saturated concrete are described particularly. Employing the Galerkin finite element method for the spatial discretization and a finite difference time-stepping scheme for the temporal discretization, a fully implicit algorithm is developed for the numerical solutions of the governing equations. The computational framework is implemented and validated by comparing numerical results with analytical solutions and experimental observations. Further numerical simulations have been carried out for quantitative durability design and assessment of RC structures exposed to chloride environment.

PALM:: a computational framework for assembling high-performance computing applications

The PALM project aims to implement a general tool allowing the easy integration of high-performance computing applications in a flexible and evolutive way. It was originally designed for oceanographic data assimilation algorithms, but its application domain extends to multiple scientific applications. In the framework of PALM, applications are split into elementary components that can exchange data. The main features of PALM are the dynamic launching of the coupled components, the full independence of the components from the application algorithm, the parallel data exchanges with redistribution and the separation of the physics from the algebraic manipulations performed by the PALM algebra toolbox. In this paper we report on the development and demonstration of physically consistent three-dimensional models for Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) cells. The discharge behavior of a LIB is a multi-physics and multiscale problem that is simulated using coupled models for thermal, electrical, and electrochemical phenomena. The individual physics models and software are integrated into a new open computational framework for battery simulations which was designed to support a variety of modeling formulations and computer codes. Several cell configurations (unrolled cell, unrolled cell with current collectors, large capacity pouch cell, and cylindrical cell) that show the importance of coupled simulations are simulated using this approach and discussed. An intelligent computational framework for the definition and identification of the womenswear silhouettes

Purpose - The current studies on the clothing silhouette are very limited. The purpose of this paper is to propose an innovative framework to intelligently identify the womenswear silhouette with the latest computer technologies. To clearly define the womenswear silhouette, an accurate numerical definition is proposed. Design/methodology/approach - The study first processes and segments the useful parts on the static catwalk image data files following existing graphic extraction approaches. Six basic alphabetical womenswear silhouette types are selected and numerically defined. Then, the proposed framework automatically classifies the six basic womenswear silhouettes considering the different slopes between three main clothing parts. Six clothing situations are discovered according to different designs and the detailed cases are systematically categorized. In addition, aspects influencing the judgment of the clothing silhouettes such as the skin, the background, the drastic change points are also considered. The proposed silhouette definition and identification framework is novel and proved accurate. Findings - The proposed definition and identification framework of womenswear silhouettes have been proved a viable approach that is fully compatible with the current computer technologies. The validation study shows that the presented identification procedure has a desirable accuracy over 90 percent. Originality/value - The proposed methodology develops brand new standards to numerically define and identify the womenswear silhouette, which was not available in the past. Besides, the measurement, the identification and the classification procedures are fully validated by the image data collected from 14 world famous brands over 11 consecutive seasons. It is shown that the proposed numerical framework of the womenswear silhouettes is a robust one, considering all of the observed design variabilities.

Script-to-Movie: A computational framework for Story Movie Composition

Traditional movie production has always been a highly professional work that needs team collaboration, advanced devices and techniques, and vast time and money investment. These high threshold requirements not only prevent mass amateur enthusiasts entering this field, but also hinder professionals quickly previewing their conceived story plots. In this paper, we raise a novel application, named script-to-movie (S2M) composition, to automatically produce new movies from existing videos in accordance with user created script. Our motivation is to liberate producers from complex filming and editing operations, thereby people's story idea can be instantly converted into the vivid movie video. To support the novel "What You Dream Is What You See" (WYDIWYS) production mode, we first propose a hierarchical alignment method to automatically construct a video material database with detailed semantic description. Considering diverse story plots in user designed script, the database contains abundant video materials about different characters appearing in various time and places conditions. On this basis, the S2M composition is formulated as a constrained optimization problem, where semantic story plot and syntactic visual content are synthetically considered to identify a group of optimal video segments to narrate the user designed script story. Both quantitative and qualitative experimental results are reported to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed S2M application.

A computational framework for combustion of powdered solid fuels in a MILD reactor using a novel devolatilisation model

In this paper, a computational framework for modelling the thermochemical conversion of powdered solid fuels in a MILD reactor is presented. Specific fuels of interest are high ash coals and lignocellulosic biomass. The novelty of the current framework lies in recognising that the devolatilisation process of charring fuels like biomass and coal is surface heat transfer limited at heating rates relevant to practical systems. The in-house unified ignition devolatilisation model developed for pelletised biomass in a packed bed configuration is extended to powdered fuels. Comprehensive modelling of a 50kW solid fuel MILD reactor is accomplished by integrating the particle model with a commercially available CFD code. Unsteady Lagrangian particle tracking in an Eulerian gas phase is used to resolve the temperature profile in the reactor. Heat loss from the reactor walls, an essential parameter for obtaining accurate temperature profiles, is obtained by striking an energy balance over the entire domain using experimental data (from the earlier work of the authors). Results of numerical simulations with two different fuels (powdered coal and groundnut shells) covering a wide range of flow conditions obtained with the framework are presented in the current study. Normalised spatial temperature variation and the O-2 mole fraction profiles with the two fuels indicate that the reactor operates in MILD mode. The temperature profiles predicted with the framework are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. The modelling approach successfully predicts the operational regimes of the reactor. A noteworthy feature of the new framework is its applicability in predicting devolatilisation of different fuels without the need for any adjustable constants. This enables the use of this framework as a predictive design tool.

A computational framework for retrieval of document fragments based on decomposition schemes in engineering information management

Retrieval of document fragments has a great potential for application in engineering information management. Frequently engineers have neither the time nor inclination to sift through long documents for small pieces of useful information. Yet it is frequently in the form of one or more long documents that the information that they seek is presented. Supporting the delivery of the right information, in the right for-mat and in the right quantity motivates the search for better ways of handling document sub-components or fragments. Document fragment retrieval can be facilitated using modern computational technologies. This paper proposes a novel framework for information access utilising state-of-the-art computational technologies and introducing the use of multiple document structure views through decomposition schemes. The framework integrates document structure study, mark-up technologies, automated fragment extraction, faceted classification and a document navigation mechanism to achieve the target of retrieval of specific document fragments using precise. complex queries. These disparate elements have been brought together in an exploratory Engineering Document Content Management System (EDCMS). Using this, investigations using representative engineering documents have shown that information users can access and retrieve document content - at fragment level rather than at document level - both through data in a document and document metadata, through different perspectives and at different granularities, and simultaneously across multiple documents as well as within a single document.
