Estimation of a gaseous release into the atmosphere using a formation of UAVs

The real-time estimation of a gaseous plume that results from gas released into the atmosphere by a moving aerial source is presented. The approach is utilizing a group of UAVs equipped with gas concentration sensors onboard and the concentration measurements are used in an estimation scheme in the form of a Luenberger observer. The estimator is modeled as the advection-diffusion equation, which is solved numerically in real-time using a finite volume method on a dynamically adapted computational grid. The UAVs maintain a rigid flying formation, with the control signals for the leader being provided by the Lyapunov-redesign method, which couples the UAV dynamics to the performance of the estimator. The follower UAVs provide plant information to the estimator and also compute the spatial gradients necessary for the implementation of the guidance scheme. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of the proposed approach. © 2016

Midland: a service-oriented cluster computing infrastructure

Midland is a service-oriented software infrastructure that enables the clustering of arbitrarily large collections of computing resources. The resulting clusters may be integrated to form an open, dynamically configurable computational grid system where each cluster defines a self-reliant and independent management domain. Web Services make up the primary integration mechanism both at the cluster and grid levels, respectively. This is complemented by a light XML based messaging protocol exclusively used for cluster bound interactions. The paper describes Midland's architecture, and the service-oriented approach taken to develop the associated resource management mechanisms. It also includes an exposition of the model of service capacity which is one of the enablers of the service-centric strategy underlying the cluster management mechanisms. The operational performance of Midland is illustrated experimentally in the context of a Grid test-bed comprising three clusters. The experimental results highlight the performance of the model of service capacity as well as some aspects of Midland operational performance.

The objective of Grid computing is to make processing power as accessible and easy to use as electricity and water. The last decade has seen an unprecedented growth in Grid infrastructures which nowadays enables large-scale deployment of applications in the scientific computation domain. One of the main challenges in realizing the full potential of grids is making these systems dependable. In this paper we present FailRank, a novel framework for integrating and ranking information sources that characterize failures in a grid system. After the failing sites have been ranked, these can be eliminated from the job scheduling resource pool yielding in that way a more predictable, dependable and adaptive infrastructure. We also present the tools we developed towards evaluating the FailRank framework. In particular, we present the FailBase Repository which is a 38GB corpus of state information that characterizes the EGEE Grid for one month in 2007. Such a corpus paves the way for the community to systematically uncover new, previously unknown patterns and rules between the multitudes of parameters that can contribute to failures in a Grid environment. Additionally, we present an experimental evaluation study of the FailRank system over 30 days which shows that our framework identifies failures in 93% of the cases and can achieve this by only fetching 65% of the available information sources. We believe that our work constitutes another important step towards realizing adaptive Grid computing systems.

We describe the goals and initial implementation of the International Solid Earth Virtual Observatory (iSERVO). This system is built using a Web Services approach to Grid computing infrastructure and is accessed via a component-based Web portal user interface. We describe our implementations of services used by this system, including Geographical Information System (GIS)-based data grid services for accessing remote data repositories and job management services for controlling multiple execution steps. iSERVO is an example of a larger trend to build globally scalable scientific computing infrastructures using the Service Oriented Architecture approach. Adoption of this approach raises a number of research challenges in millisecond-latency message systems suitable for internet-enabled scientific applications. We review our research in these areas.

Greedy scheduling with custom-made objectives

We present a methodology to automatically generate an online job scheduling method for a custom-made objective and real workloads. The scheduling problem comprises independent parallel jobs and parallel identical machines and occurs in Massively Parallel Processing systems and computational grids. The system administrator defines the scheduling objective that may consider job properties and priorities of users or user groups. Our scheduling method combines a Greedy scheduling algorithm with the dynamic sorting of the waiting queue. This sorting algorithm uses a criterion that is modifiable by a set of parameters. Finding good parameter settings for the sorting criterion is viewed as a nonlinear optimization problem which is solved with the help of Evolution Strategies. We evaluate our scheduling method with real workload data and compare it to approximated optimal offline solutions and to the online results of the standard EASY backfill algorithm.

The current trend in constructing high-performance computing systems is to connect a large number of machines via a fast interconnect or a large-scale network such as the Internet. This approach relies on the performance of the interconnect (or Internet) to enable fast, large-scale distributed computing. A detailed understanding of the communication traffic is required in order to optimize the operation of the entire system. Network researchers traditionally monitor traffic in the network to gain the insight necessary to optimize network operations. Recent work suggests additional insight can be obtained by also monitoring traffic at the application level. The Monitor for Application-Generated Network Traffic toolkit (MAGNeT) we describe here monitors application traffic patterns in production systems, thus enabling more highly optimized networks and interconnects for the next generation of high-performance computing systems.

General approach to conformal mappings used in atmospheric modeling

A class of conformal separable variable mappings is introduced to generalize different conformal projections used in atmospheric modeling and cartography for representation of spherical regions. It is shown that conformal stereographic, conic and cylindrical projections are special cases of this class of mappings. A second approach based on composition of conformal mappings is used to describe the set of all conformal transformations from a sphere onto a plane. Under a natural assumption about the independence of the map factor from longitude a theorem of equivalence between the two above classes of conformal mappings is proved. A problem of minimization of the map factor variation within the constructed set of mappings is considered. A comparison of the map factor for different kinds of mappings (polar and oblique stereographic, conic and cylindrical) is performed based on analytical and numerical evaluations. (C) 2003 IMACS. Utilizing widely distributed computational resources efficiently with execution domains

Wide-area computational grids have the potential to provide large amounts of computing capacity to the scientific community. Realizing this potential requires intelligent data management, enabling applications to harness remote computing resources with minimal remote data access overhead. We define execution domains, a framework which defines an affinity between CPU and data resources in the grid, so applications are scheduled to run on CPUs which have the needed access to datasets and storage devices. The framework also includes domain managers, agents which dynamically adjust the execution domain configuration to support the efficient execution of grid applications. In this paper, we present the execution domain framework and show how we apply it in the Condor resource management system. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Adaptive scheduling under memory constraints on non-dedicated computational farms

This paper presents scheduler extensions that enable better adaptation of parallel programs to the execution conditions of non-dedicated computational farms with limited memory resources. The purpose of the techniques is to prevent thrashing and co-schedule communicating threads, using two disjoint, yet cooperating extensions to the kernel scheduler. A thrashing prevention module enables memory-bound programs to adapt to memory shortage, via suspending their threads at selected points of execution. Thread suspension is used so that memory is not over-committed by parallel jobs-which are assumed to be running as guests on the nodes of the computational farm-at memory allocation points. In the event of thrashing, parallel jobs are the first to release memory and help local resident jobs make progress. Adaptation is implemented using a shared-memory interface in the /proc filesystem and upcalls from the kernel to the user space. On an orthogonal axis, co-scheduling is implemented in the kernel with a heuristic that boosts periodically the priority of communicating threads. Using experiments on a cluster of workstations, we show that when a guest parallel job competes with general-purpose interactive, I/O-intensive, or CPU and memory-intensive load on the nodes of the cluster, thrashing prevention reduces drastically the slowdown of the job at memory utilization levels of 20% or higher. The slowdown of parallel jobs is reduced by up to a factor of 7. Co-scheduling provides a limited performance improvement at memory utilization levels below 20%, but has no significant effect at higher memory utilization levels. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. After having deployed a first data challenge on malaria and a second one on avian flu, respectively in summer 2005 and spring 2006, we are demonstrating here again how efficiently the computational grids can be used to produce massive docking data at a high-throughput. During more than 2 months and a half, we have achieved at least 140 million dockings, representing an average throughput of almost 80,000 dockings per hour. This was made possible by the availability of thousands of CPUs through different infrastructures worldwide. Through the acquired experience, the WISDOM production environment is evolving to enable an easy and fault-tolerant deployment of biological tools;in this case it is the FlexX commercial docking software which is used to dock the whole ZINC database against 4 different targets.
