The objective of this undergraduate thesis is to study the Swedish Social Democatic Party’s standpoint of the law allowing asylum seekers to choose where to live (ebo) between 1994-2009. The study’s empirical material is being based on official documents from the Swedish Parliament, which is being analyzed by a method called ”process-tracing”. ? A research question has been formulated to supplement the objective: What arguments has the Swedish Social Democratic Party expressed pro and con the law of ”ebo”? ? The study’s theoretical framwork is based on two theories which explain incentives behind parties’ decision-making, strategic or ideological, on three arenas. As the law was ratified the party took a positive standpoint, but later shifted to become stricly against it. The main result was that through the theoretical perspecitve one can argue that the party members used a more ideological argumentation, but later on, based their evaluation of ebo on a strategic matter.?

A continuously and stably stratified fluid contained in a square cavity subjected to harmonic body forcing is studied numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation. Complex dynamics are observed near the onset of instability of the basic state, which is a flow configuration that is always an exact analytical solution of the governing equations. The instability of the basic state to perturbations is first studied with linear stability analysis (Floquet analysis), revealing a multitude of intersecting synchronous and subharmonic resonance tongues in parameter space. A modal reduction method for determining the locus of basic state instability is also shown, greatly simplifying the computational overhead normally required by a Floquet study. Then, a study of the nonlinear governing equations determines the criticality of the basic state's instability, and ultimately characterizes the dynamics of the lowest order spatial mode by the three discovered codimension-two bifurcation points within the resonance tongue. The rich dynamics include a homoclinic doubling cascade that resembles the logistic map and a multitude of gluing bifurcations. The numerical techniques and methodologies are first demonstrated on a homogeneous fluid contained within a three-dimensional lid-driven cavity. The edge state technique and linear stability analysis through Arnoldi iteration are used to resolve the complex dynamics of the canonical shear-driven benchmark problem. The techniques here lead to a dynamical description of an instability mechanism, and the work serves as a basis for the remainder of the dissertation.

In this thesis a finite element model of a household washing machine cylinder is built and analysed in ABAQUS 6.9-2. The aim is to help Asko appliances in conducting similar analysis for future manufacturing of high capacity cylinders by reducing experimentation. The analysis is mainly concerned with an evenly distributed load at a constant angular velocity. The load is applied with the help of lead plates instead of clothes. The cylinder is loaded with three thin (2 mm) lead plates weighing 2 kg each. The plates with dimensional 370x240x2 mm are mounted with one strip of double sided foam tape inside the cylinder. To estimate the behavior of the cylinder the strains are measured when the cylinder is rotating at 1620 and 2200 revolution per minute (rpm). To validate the model the numerical analyses are compared with experimental results. The results clearly show that the numerical strain values fit with experimental strain values

This report investigates methods of optimization to make treatment plans in radiosurgery robust to spatial uncertainty, and attempts to determine whether they could be used with bene t in a Gamma Knife context. To make the problem mathematically feasible, regions of interest (ROIs) are approximated to move in a pre-computed static dose cloud, which in turn is estimated by methods of linear interpolation and linear *** movements of ROIs are modeled by transforms, of which rigid, general affine, and a special case of non-affine transforms are treated. Of these, the rigid transforms are used to flexibly assess various properties of the robust optimization model; the a ne transforms to model the total geometric error of the Gamma Knife, excluding ROI delineation; and the non-affine transforms for initial modeling of the important delineation *** the geometric errors, traditionally seen as small for the Gamma Knife, the robust treatment plans are seen to compare favorably to those obtained by non-robust optimization. Delineation errors are found to need careful modeling in order to avoid excessively conservative plans, which may harm normal tissue

Molecular dynamics simulations are a very usefultool to study the behavior and interaction of atoms and molecules in chemicaland bio-molecular systems. With the fast rising complexity of such simulationshybrid systems with both, multi-core processors (CPUs) and multiple graphics processingunits (GPUs), become more and more popular. To obtain an optimal performance thisthesis presents and evaluates two different hybrid algorithms, employing allavailable compute capacity from CPUs and GPUs. Understanding the dynamics of thin elastic rods that are immersed in fluid is fundamental in explaining many problems that arise in biology, physics and engineering. Solving the coupled system of rod-fluid in 3D is usually very costly, however in case of low Reynolds number, the three-dimensional problem can be reduced a one-dimensional problem on the centerline of the rod. In this thesis we examine the method of regularized Stokeslets which is a numerical algorithm for an elastic rod immersed in viscous, incompressible fluid at zero Reynolds number governed by Stokes equations. In this method, the elastic rod is represented by a space curve corresponding to the centerline of the rod. In addition, an orthonormal triad is varying along the curve, with one vector being tangent to the curve, and the others describing the material twist. The model that is used for the elastic forces based on this, allows for natural configurations for the rods that are far from straight, as described by curvature and torsion. In this way, the basic or equilibrium configuration for the rod can be e.g. a helix. The linearity of Stokes equations allows us to evaluate the linear and angular fluid velocity only at centerline of the rod. We also examine the dependency to the numerical parameters together with the accuracy and convergence properties of the method. As a bench mark, we compare the numerical result of this method to those produced by the non-local slender body method for the case of elastic rods with no intrinsic curvature and twist inside a planar shear flow. We also present the simulation of the extension of helical rods when they are placed within a constant background flow and we provide a fast converging formula for the periodic summation of the fundamental solutions to the Stokes equations.; ?F?rst?elsen f?r dynamiken hos tunna elastiska fibrer eller stavar inuti en v?tska ?r fundamental f?r att f?rklara m?nga problem som uppst?r inom biologi, fysik och ingenj?rsvetenskap.

In order to perform simulations of the human heart using a heart finite element solver developed at the computational Technology Laboratory at KTH with a data set provided by Philips consisting of surface meshes of a whole heart, the surface mesh has to be converted to a volume mesh. The conversion is manual and time consuming. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is to develop algorithms and software tools for automatic generation of a finite element model in the form of a volume mesh of the left ventricle of a human heart based on the available Philips data set. The developed model can be used for the simulation of blood flow by solving the Navier–Stokes equations. The method used for generating the model is based on deformation of an a priori finite element volume mesh to fit the extracted inner wall surface mesh of the left ventricle, from the aforementioned data set. The deformation is done by solving a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) using the finite element *** method starts with the characterization of an external field that describes the distance from the target surface mesh, and then uses this external field as a component of the total force responsible for deforming the object. The method is validated in three space dimension by deforming a sphere into an ellipsoid. For this test case, two implementations of the PDE were tested and *** method was then applied to the above mentioned Philips data set. Carbonate preservation in the oceans occurs at a depth called the carbonate compensation depth (CCD). The CCD is where the input rate of carbonate from the surface of the ocean is balanced by the dissolution rate. Factors controlling the CCD are the CO2 in the atmosphere, weathering, and productivity in the surface water, the depth of the lysocline and deep water currents (and their ocean circulation). Two previous studies have investigated the variation of the CCD through geologic time, one in the equatorial Pacific (P?like et al., 2012) and the other compiled results from the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans (Van Andel, 1975). The project consisted of compiling a database of sediment lithologies for many more sites in the Atlantic since the compilation by Van Andel, 1975, and together with a subsidence model of the ocean crust the systematic variations of CCD could be investigated. The results show that the CCD varies both spatially and temporally in accordance with previous studies. The reconstruction of the CCD needs further analysis, and possibly data from the oldest drilling program, the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). One result that is very important is that this study includes a total of 91 sites in the Atlantic Ocean, far more than in any of the other two studies. Future work can build upon the already started database of sediment lithologies

Numerical integration methods exploiting the characteristics of neuronal equation systems were investigated. The main observations was a high stiffness and a quasi-linearity of the system. The latter allowed for decomposition into two smaller systems by using a block diagonal Jacobian approximation. The popular backwards differentiation formulas methods (BDF) showed performance degradation for this during first experiments. Linearly implicit peer methods (PeerLI), a new class of methods, did not show this degradation. Parameters for PeerLI were optimized by experimental means and then compared in performance to BDF. Models were simulated in both Matlab and NEURON, a neuron modelling package. For small models PeerLI was competitive with BDF, especially with a block diagonal Jacobian. In NEURON the performance of the block diagonal Jacobian did no longer degrade for BDF, but instead showed degradation for PeerLI, especially for large models. With full Jacobian PeerLI was competitive with BDF, but with block diagonal Jacobian an increase of ca.50% was seen in simulation time. Overall PeerLI methods were competitive for certain problems, but did not give the desired performance gain for block diagonal Jacobian for large problems. There is, however, still a lot of room for improvement, since parameters were only determined experimentally and tuned to small problems. This report describes the development of the foundations of new computational algorithms for optimal control of high-dimensional stochastic dynamical systems. The proposed optimal control architecture emphasizes the role of data-driven probability density function PDF equations instead of nonlinear dynamics in the control loop. This paradigm shift opens the possibility to integrate advanced numerical methods for high-dimensional PDF equations with optimization algorithms to mitigate the effects of uncertainty in high-dimensional nonlinear control systems. This effort developed scalable software and fast algorithms to compute the numerical solution to of high-dimensional PDF equations developed a systematic methodology to compute the numerical solution to data-driven PDF equations integrated the numerical algorithms to solve high-dimensional PDF equations into the proposed data-driven computational optimal control framework and demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed data-driven control strategies in several applications.
