Coarse graining with control points: a cubic-Bézier based approach to modeling athermal fibrous materials

Fibrous materials continue to be of central importance to modern life, including traditional materials, such as textiles and paper, modern materials, such as polymeric materials and glass fiber, and emerging materials, such as carbon nanotube yarns. Developing constitutive laws for the mechanical behavior of such materials can be challenging owing to the often non-periodic microstructure, resulting in fairly large and computationally intractable representative volume elements. Therefore, it is imperative to design novel coarse-grained models that can bridge the computational gap and capture accurate physics associated with the mechanical behavior of fibrous materials. In this work, cubic-B & eacute;ziers are used to represent fiber-segments, allowing for up to C2(curvature)-continuous representation of curved fibers. Equations of motion are derived in terms of the control points, which allow for minimization and time integration strategies with the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism. This coarse-grained model promises faster and more accurate computational performance compared to discrete approaches.

Existing space-time Neyman-Scott models characterize rainfall as the arrival of rain cells, clustered in time and independently distributed in space. Each cell is described as a cylinder having a random intensity ( height) and random radial coverage. With this formulation it is possible to have cells with centers lying outside of a target simulation region yet having radii large enough to cover points within the region. To avoid significant boundary effects, it is necessary to include these points in the simulation. However, this can introduce inefficiency into the algorithm that is computationally restrictive. To overcome this, an efficient method is derived and demonstrated to improve computational performance.

Solid sorbent-based CO2capture from flue gas provides a novel alternative to traditional solvent-based processes due to potentially lower energy consumption for regeneration. Optimal operation of such a gas-solid flow process requires an advanced control framework for efficient disturbance rejection and setpoint tracking. This work focuses on the development of computationally fast and accurate dynamic reduced models (D-RMs) and the application of these models to nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) algorithms. Two different types of D-RMs are developed: the first type is a data-driven model where step-test data are utilized to generate the D-RM through the Decoupled A-B Net (DABNet) model, and the second type of D-RM is a temporal and spatial reduction of the original process model to improve its computational efficiency while still retaining its physics. Disturbance rejection and setpoint tracking characteristics of the NMPC and its computational performance are studied for both types of D-RMs. In addition, performance of both NMPC formulations are compared with linear model predictive control (LMPC) formulations. © 2016

This study proposed a Hough Transform algorithm based on the probabilistic scheme termed as the Orientation Constrained Probabilistic Hough Transform. The orientation constraints for segmentation are applied to form compact and reliable sampling subsets. This process is subsequently followed by constrained searching. Numerical experiments are performed with both synthetic and real datasets indicate that the proposed method performs better than other algorithms in terms of correctness and omission rate. Moreover, computational time deemed necessary is much less than that for other algorithms.

Face detection is to search all the possible regions for faces in images and locate the faces if there are any. Many applications including face recognition, facial expression recognition, face tracking and head-pose estimation assume that both the location and the size of faces are known in the image. In recent decades, researchers have created many typical and efficient face detectors from the Viola-Jones face detector to current CNN-based ones. However, with the tremendous increase in images and videos with variations in face scale, appearance, expression, occlusion and pose, traditional face detectors are challenged to detect various "in the wild" faces. The emergence of deep learning techniques brought remarkable breakthroughs to face detection along with the price of a considerable increase in computation. This paper introduces representative deep learning-based methods and presents a deep and thorough analysis in terms of accuracy and efficiency. We further compare and discuss the popular and challenging datasets and their evaluation metrics. A comprehensive comparison of several successful deep learning-based face detectors is conducted to uncover their efficiency using two metrics: FLOPs and latency. The paper can guide to choose appropriate face detectors for different applications and also to develop more efficient and accurate detectors.

Background computational tools analyzing RNA-sequencing data have boosted alternative splicing research by identifying and assessing differentially spliced genes. However, common alternative splicing analysis tools differ substantially in their statistical analyses and general performance. This report compares the computational performance (CPU utilization and RAM usage) of three event-level splicing tools;rMATS, MISO, and SUPPA2. Additionally, concordance between tool outputs was investigated. Results Log-linear relations were found between job times and dataset size in all splicing tools and all virtual machine (VM) configurations. MISO had the highest job times for all analyses, irrespective of VM size, while MISO analyses also exceeded maximum CPU utilization on all VM sizes. rMATS and SUPPA2 load averages were relatively low in both size and replicate comparisons, not nearing maximum CPU utilization in the VM simulating the lowest computational power (D2 VM). RAM usage in rMATS and SUPPA2 did not exceed 20% of maximum RAM in both size and replicate comparisons while MISO reached maximum RAM usage in D2 VM analyses for input size. Correlation coefficients of differential splicing analyses showed high correlation (beta > 80%) between different tool outputs with the exception of comparisons of retained intron (RI) events between rMATS/MISO and rMATS/SUPPA2 (beta < 60%). Conclusions Prior to RNA-seq analyses, users should consider job time, amount of replicates and splice event type of interest to determine the optimal alternative splicing tool. In general, rMATS is superior to both MISO and SUPPA2 in computational performance. Analysis outputs show high concordance between tools, with the exception of RI events.

Railway interaction is characterised by the coupling between the train and the track introduced through the wheel/rail contact. The introduction of the flexibility in the wheelset and the track through the finite element (FE) method in the last four decades has permitted to study high-frequency phenomena such as rolling noise and squeal, whose origin lies in the strongly non-steady state and non-linear behaviour of the contact forces that arise from the small contact area. In order to address models with a large number of degrees of freedom, innovative Eulerian-modal models for wheelsets with rotation and cyclic tracks have been developed in recent years. The aim of this paper is to extend the resulting formulation to an uncoupled linear matrix equation of motion that allows solving each equation independently for each time step, considerably reducing the associated computational cost. The decoupling integration method proposed is compared in terms of computational performance with Newmark and Runge-Kutta schemes, commonly used in vehicle dynamics, for simulations with the leading wheelset negotiating a tangent track and accounting the rail roughness.
