This work employs a new approach to analyze coupled-resonator circuits to design and manufacture a fully metallic dual-polarization frequency-selective surface (FSS). The proposed filtering structure is composed of a series of unit cells with resonators fundamentally coupled along the z-direction and then repeated periodically in the xy-plane. The fully metallic cascaded unit cell is rigorously analyzed within an infinite periodic environment as a coupled-resonator electromagnetic (EM) circuit. The convenient design of the EM resonators makes it possible to push the evanescent EM field through the metallic structure in the desired frequency band for both polarizations. An FSS prototype is manufactured and measured, and good agreement is found between the simulation results and the final prototype.

An electromagnetic (EM) design methodology for all metal frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with finite transmission zeros is proposed in this work. Single polarization is considered in the design, which is based on an evanescent field mechanism. An infinite 2D-periodic square-shaped metallic lattice performs the stopband behavior of the FSS, whereas H-shaped slot resonators on the sidewalls of the metallic lattice allow for the evanescent field in the desired polarization to be pushed forward in the FSS at some target passband. Finite transmission zeros next to the passband are introduced to increase the FSS selectivity using concepts from filter theory. The EM design is carried out by means of a recently proposed approach based on the electromagnetics coupling matrix. In this new methodology, not only the S parameter response is obtained out of one single full-wave simulation with the finite element method (FEM), but also the EM couplings among the EM circuit resonators. We use this electromagnetics coupling matrix to carry out an ad hoc synthesis of the FSS response directly in electromagnetics. As a result, we get a target electromagnetics coupling matrix that is used for CAD purposes. The EM-based optimization loop is guided by this target electromagnetics coupling matrix, which allows to achieve our target electrical response in very few iterations, resulting in very few FEM simulations to achieve the goal. Several design examples will illustrate the capabilities and possibilities of the proposed approach.

This work presents the design of fully metallic frequency selective surface (FSS) cascade filters through the use of a recently proposed electromagnetics coupling matrix approach. The filtering structure consists of a cascade of unit cells with resonators in z direction, and a periodic repetition of the structure in the x-y direction. The fully metallic cascade unit cell can be analyzed as a coupled resonator electromagnetic (EM) circuit, where evanescent fields are pushed forward by properly designed EM resonators. This coupled resonator FSS structure is especially suitable for an EM coupling matrix characterization, where all the EM couplings among resonators can be easily identified, providing valuable design information in the different parameters for the final performance of the FSS.

A new model order reduction strategy based on the reduced-basis method is carried out in this work. Starting off from time-harmonic Maxwell's equations, a new representation of the original Maxwell system is developed. First, a reduced basis approximation allows for a reduced-order representation of electrodynamics in the frequency band of interest. As a result, the Kurokawa series representation for electromagnetics turns pretty much into a finite sum of dominant eigenresonances, which stand upon global eigenmodes of the Maxwell system. This gives rise to a linear dynamical system in electromagnetics and, after a proper arrangement, provides extremely useful physical information from which an electrical engineer can get actionable design insights. In this work, we use computational electromagnetics as an actual design tool and several realistic design applications will be considered during the presentation.

Electromagnetics today underpins all modern information and communication technologies. Increasing deployment of telecommunication services is urging RF industry to carry out better and better electrical designs, where a single device is no longer conceived to perform a single functionality, but rather multiple tasks at the same time. Unfortunately, much electrical design activity is still based on brute-force computational simulations to predict the actual physical behavior of electromagnetic devices. These time-consuming simulations are repeated, changing the device characteristics until satisfying stricter specifications of emerging information and communications technologies (5G and IoT). In our work we use computational electromagnetics as an actual design tool, rather than just an analysis one. This can be achieved by shriking computational electromagnetics into a simple parameterized equivalent circuit form, from which an electrical engineer can get actionable design insights.

This paper investigates the effect of the switching frequency of pulse width modulation (PWM) motor drives on radiated Electromagnetic Field Interference (EMI) due to common Mode (CM) ground currents. A technique with two successive steps is used to simulate conducted as well as the radiated EMI. At first, a high-frequency permanent magnet (PM) machine model, a high-frequency cable model, and a low-frequency IGBT drive model are employed to simulate the common mode (CM) current through ground paths, conducted EMI. The radiated EMI is modeled as a time harmonic electromagnetic wave which is propagated through all the components of the electric drive system. The Radiated EMI were evaluated by 3DFE analysis while the simulated common mode (CM) ground current from the first step was used as the supply source of the radiated fields. The results of this two step technique follow the expected patterns and provides a novel numerical alternative during the design and development stage of electric motor drive systems.

FE-Circuit Coupled Model of Electric Machines for Simulation and Evaluation of EMI Issues in Motor Drives

A new FE-circuit coupled model is proposed to simulate the electromagnetic field interference (EMI) caused by terminal overvoltage and ground current of electric machines connected to driving circuits. The high frequency effects due to the PWM drive were considered in the transient FE-circuit coupled model of the motor using a two-step procedure. First, the resistance in each individual winding turn of a coil is evaluated by time harmonic high frequency FE analysis considering skin and proximity effects. The capacitances of the coil were calculated by an electrostatic FE analysis to form a distributed parameter model of the coil in each conducting region. Second, a lumped parameter model for the coil was obtained through a matrix reduction technique. The lumped models of the different coils were connected in series to form a per phase winding model. The FE-circuit coupled model of the motor is tested in a motor drive to evaluate the terminal over voltages and ground currents. The numerical results were successfully verified by the corresponding laboratory test measurements. The proposed model can be used as a novel computational prototyping tool which would allow the development to design and final product stages to be completed without the need for repeated build and test procedures in an industrial environment.

A FRAMEWORK FOR RAPID computational prototyping OF MANUFACTURING ENTITIES

A framework for enhancement of conceptual tools for rapid computational prototyping of manufacturing entities is presented. A typical manufacturing entity (i.e. manufacturing system and/or individual part) is hierarchically represented in a computer and coupled with applications by dividing its information content into three computational elements: data, drawing and user interface. The information content is divided in this way because each of the above elements has a sufficiently distinct requirement for an efficient computer implementation. Although independent advances have taken place in computer data representation by highly efficient and focused data structures, in drawing representation by sophisticated computer graphics, as well as in user interface by a variety of interface media, these advances cannot be directly utilized in the design of a manufacturing entity unless they are efficiently integrated by relatively small programming effort as is described in this rapid prototyping framework. The framework is implemented in object-oriented programming. A breadth of application areas for the framework is illustrated, and specific details are illustrated with reference to depth in one application area.
