computational reflection and its application to platform verification

The complexity of modern hardware design has created the need for higher levels of abstraction, where system modeling is used to integrate modules into complex System-on-Chip (SoCs) platforms. SystemC, and its TLM (Transaction Level Modeling) extensions, have been used for this purpose mainly because of their fast prototyping and simulation features, which allow for early design space exploration. This paper proposes an approach to explore and interact with SystemC models by means of an introspection technique known as computational reflection. We use reflection to implement a white-box introspection mechanism called ReflexBox. We show that ReflexBox is a fast, non-intrusive technique that can be used to dynamically gather and inject stimuli into any SystemC module, without the need to use a proprietary SystemC implementation, change the SystemC library, instrument or even inspect the module source code. Our approach can be used to support many different verification tasks like platform debugging, performance evaluation and communication analysis. To show ReflexBox effectiveness we used it in three platforms case studies to address tasks like register inspection, performance analysis and signal replaying for testbench reuse. In all cases we assumed no source code availability and measured the impact on the overall platform performance.

The goal of multidatabase system is to make heterogeneity among components transparent to users and applications. The main problem of the integration of multiple databases lie in the semantic heterogeneity. We propose computational reflection being the accommodation because computational reflection can to a great extent change a domain value's semantics according to the situation.

Software production processes are subject to changes during their life-time. Therefore, software process formalism must include modifications to support the analysis and dynamic modification of process models, even while they are being enacted. It is thus necessary for a process model to have the ability to reason about its own structure. Petri net based process languages have been criticized because of the lack of these reflective features and their inability to effectively support process evolution. In this paper we present the reflective features offered by SLANG, a process formalism based on an high-level Petri net notation. In particular, we discuss the mechanisms to create and modify different net fragments while the modeled process is being enacted.

Separating adaptable persistence attributes through computational reflection

A prototype persistence system based on the nitrO reflective system demonstrates that computational reflection is a suitable technique for dynamically and transparently adapting any application's persistence attributes, following the separation-of-concerns principle. Because computational reflection offers the runtime customization of language semantics, it lets developers combine programming language and database management systems into a single computational model.

A dynamic object behavior model based on computational reflection is proposed. This model consists of function level and meta level, the meta objects in meta level manage the base objects and behaviors in function level, including dynamic binding and unbinding of base object and behavior. We implement this model with RoleJava Language,which is our self linguistic extension of the Java *** Objects are generated automatically at compile\|time,this makes the reflecton mechanism transparent to *** an example applying this model to a banking system is presented.

Currently, the telecommunications management systems are powerful, however maintain centralized and proprietary platforms, limiting this way, the growth of these telecommunications networks. This factor generates the need Ibr scalable and open systems, stimulating the sectors of the telecommunications area to seek for solutions for the problem in distributed heterogeneous and totally scalable environments. The recent advances in the area of distributed objects, has created many positive expectations for the development of client/server systems which use, as if they were local, resources available through the network, This way the objective of this work consists in the experimental evaluation of the potential of the main CORBA services in conjunction with the Java language, through the necessary requirements for the main functionalities proposed by the TMN architecture. For the implementation of the telecommunication services with the reusability of codes we use computational refection with meta-classes substituting the manager and classes substituting the agents.

Distributed software systems often intertwine the handling of application functionalities with distribution related issues including location transparent access to services, workload allocation among different hosts, adaptation to changing conditions of the network. In the paper, a computational reflection based distributed query model is proposed. The model uses computational reflection to divide the distributed query system into two levels: the meta level and the base level. Meta objects that existed in the meta level are responsible for control and description of the base level, hence the state change of the base level could be captured by the meta level and be controlled according to the meta level's reaction. The advantages of the model are that adapt different changes such as data resources in the network, network conditions, query plan, and provide the capability of fault tolerance.

Towards Dynamic Evolution of Runtime Variability Based on computational reflection

Given the frequently changing nature of the user requirements and environments in software systems, runtime variability in today's software systems should be capable of evolving during execution. computational reflection is required to facilitate accessing and customizing runtime variability during this evolution process. However, realizing this computational reflection includes various practical complexities since the runtime variability is typically neither explicitly represented in software systems nor changeable during runtime. To address this problem, this paper proposes a software architecture to support computational reflection of runtime variability, along with a corresponding causal-connection mechanism to realize the introspection and intercession (i.e. representing runtime variability model, and adding, removing, replacing variability elements and their relations). The proposed software architecture consists of a meta level that represents runtime variability model using objectification, and a base level that organizes and manipulates the implementation of variability elements via reconfiguration. The causal-connection mechanism integrated in our proposed model is designed to synchronize the representation and the implementation. Further, we developed a Reflective Runtime Variability Framework (R2VF) to support the development and operation of the systems with the reflection of runtime variability. The effectiveness and applicability of our approach has been evaluated by applying R2VF to Personal Data Resource Network.

The transparent implementation of agent communication contexts

Agent Communication Contexts (ACCs) are virtual environments where agents may live and interact. In this way, as in a human society, interactions may be subject to conventions and laws depending on the context where they occur. For this to be possible, an ACC should embed the communication laws relevant to the intended class of agent applications and enforce them, as interactions among agents take place. Although context is a communication aspect relevant for all the agents of an application, its modelling should be, in principle, an orthogonal concern with respect to the design of the activities of each agent. Consistently with this view, this work advocates the separate development of, respectively, agent behaviour, and the interaction aspects constituting the context. The latter is first abstractly specified as a set of communication laws, then automatically implemented by a tool that generates the necessary ACC management and checking code from the specification. The appropriate portions of this code should be activated whenever an interaction between agents takes place, so as to ensure that (i) the constraints specified by the laws are respected by the interaction, and (ii) the actions some of the laws require are carried out before the interaction actually occurs. Moreover, this work proposes an infrastructure whereby ACC code is triggered at runtime, whenever agents interact with each other. No source code modification or recompilation is required for this. All is seamlessly accomplished by means of computational reflection, which transparently changes the meaning of the communication primitives normally used by agent programmers.
