There is an increasing recognition in the society that interdisciplinary challenges must be part of new educational practices. In this paper, we describe the key curriculum activities at the University of Southern Denmark that combine mathematical modelling, software engineering, and user-centred design courses. These three disciplines represent a core of our graduate program, aiming at educating the professionals that will be capable of not only using but also further developing new technologies, and therefore, will be capable of fostering further the progress in computational science and engineering. Finally, we show how the learning environment, with emphases on broadening the student experience by industrial links, affects the student career aspiration. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. One major area in the theory of statistical signal processing is reduced-rank - timation where optimal linear estimators are approximated in low-dimensional subspaces, e.g., in order to reduce the noise in overmodeled problems, - hance the performance in case of estimated statistics, and/or save compu- tional complexity in the design of the estimator which requires the solution of linear equation systems. This book provides a comprehensive overview over reduced-rank ?lters where the main emphasis is put on matrix-valued ?lters whose design requires the solution of linear systems with multiple right-hand sides. In particular, the multistage matrix Wiener ?lter, i.e., a reduced-rank Wiener ?lter based on the multistage decomposition, is derived in its most general form. In numerical mathematics, iterative block Krylov methods are very po- lar techniques for solving systems of linear equations with multiple right-hand sides, especially if the systems are large and sparse. Besides presenting a - tailed overview of the most important block Krylov methods in Chapter 3, which may also serve as an introduction to the topic, their connection to the multistage matrix Wiener ?lter is revealed in this book. Especially, the reader will learn the restrictions of the multistage matrix Wiener ?lter which are necessary in order to end up in a block Krylov method. This relationship is of great theoretical importance because it connects two di?erent ?elds of mathematics, viz., statistical signal processing and numerical linear algebra.

This book deals with numerical simulations and computations of the turbulent flow around high-lift configurations commonly used in aircraft. It is devoted to the computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) method using full Navier-Stokes solvers typically used in the simulation of high-lift configuration. With the increase of computational resources in the aeronautical industry, the computation of complex flows such as the aerodynamics of high-lift configurations has become an active field not only in academic but also in industrial environments. The scope of the book includes applications and topics of interest related to the simulation of high-lift configurations such as: lift and drag prediction, unsteady aerodynamics, low Reynolds effects, high performance computing, turbulence modelling, flow feature visualization, among others. This book gives a description of the state-of-the-art of computational models for simulation of high-lift configurations. It also shows and discusses numerical results and validation of these computational models. Finally, this book is a good reference for graduate students and researchers interested in the field of simulation of high-lift configurations.

The aim of this International Symposium on Dynamics of Vibro-Impact Systems is to provide a forum for the discussion of recent developments in the theory and industrial applications of vibro-impact ocean systems. A special effort has been made to invite active researchers from engineering, science, and applied mathematics communities. This symposium has indeed updated engineers with recent analytical developments of vibro-impact dynamics and at the same time allowed engineers and industrial practitioners to alert mathematicians with their unresolved issues. The symposium was held in Troy, Michigan, during the period October 1-3, 2008. It included 28 presentations grouped as follows: The first group comprises of nine papers dealing with the interaction of ocean systems with slamming waves and floating ice. It also covers related topics such as sloshing-slamming dynamics, and non-smooth dynamics associated with offshore structures. Moreover, it includes control issues pertaining to marine surface vessels. The second group consists of fifteen papers treats the interaction of impact systems with friction and their control, Hertzian contact dynamics, parameter variation in vibro-impact oscillators, random excitation of vibro-impact systems, vibro-impact dampers, oscillators with a bouncing ball, limiting phase trajectory corresponding to energy exchange between the oscillator and external source, frequency-energy distribution in oscillators with impacts, and discontinuity mapping. The third group is covered in four papers and addresses some industrial applications such as hand-held percussion machines, rub-impact dynamics of rotating machinery, impact fatigue in joint structures.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a trend all over the world. This trend has led to the application and development of intelligent system that apply AI. In this paper, we describe a system architecture that uses AI, on a platform called EDISON, for computer science and engineering research. This architecture can be used to develop intelligent systems and can support applications in various fields by assisting in the development of algorithms and computer code. In this paper, we demonstrate the scalability of the proposed architecture on EDISON using different languages and application examples from various fields.

Parallel programming of high-performance computers has emerged as a key technology for the numerical solution of large-scale problems arising in computational science and engineering (CSE). The authors believe that principles and techniques of parallel programming are among the essential ingredients of any CSE as well as computer science curriculum. Today, opinions on the role and importance of parallel programming are diverse. Rather than seeing it as a marginal beneficial skill optionally taught at the graduate level, we understand parallel programming as crucial basic skill that should be taught as an integral part of the undergraduate computer science curriculum. A practical training course developed for computer science undergraduates at Aachen University is described. Its goal is to introduce young computer science students to different parallel programming paradigms for shared and distributed memory computers as well as to give a first exposition to the field of computationalscience by simple, yet carefully chosen sample problems.
