Assessing the impact of heat vulnerability on urban public spaces using a fuzzy-based unified computational technique

Over the years, the urban heat vulnerability has evolved as a pressing global concern for researchers and policymakers alike. Numerous studies have aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of urban heat vulnerability on public health and safety. However, the critical task of selecting the most fitting indicator for urban heat islands in public spaces is not emphasized in the existing studies, considering the diverse indices available. Beyond identification, studies that delve into the prioritization of these indices and the determination of optimal variables along with their respective weights are scanty. The present study attempts to address these gaps in urban heat vulnerability research through the lens of natural solutions. The study employs a fuzzy analytical hierarchy approach to ascertain the weights of selected criteria, providing a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted factors influencing their applicability. Real-time impact estimation using the fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solutions enhances the practicality of the findings. The results reveal a set of pivotal characteristics crucial for constructing a robust heat vulnerability index, facilitating the prioritization of selected criteria. The implementation of this hybrid methodology culminates in a streamlined, precise, and practical tool for evaluating heat vulnerability in hot urban public spaces. These findings contribute valuable insights to the academic discourse and offer a tangible resource for policymakers and practitioners. The proactive approach provides a roadmap for addressing impending challenges related to urban heat vulnerability, marking a positive step toward creating resilient and sustainable urban environments.

computational technique for probing terminal control mechanisms inside three-dimensional nano-scale MOSFET

A novel computational technique is presented to study the terminal influence inside the three-dimensional (3D) nano-scale metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) using TCAD simulations. Within the MOSFET the derivative of the electrostatic potential with respect to voltages at each terminal is taken, and when these derivatives are summed together they always sum to unity. It is found that these functions can be used to quantify the relative influence or control of the terminals anywhere inside the MOSFET, including the channel. The motivation for moving from planar MOSFETs to 3D-MOSFETs is to increase the gate control over the channel. The terminal influence functions quantify the notion of control. To gain insight into the working of a semiconductor device, different quantities like potential, charge or current density etc. may be visualised. These quantities are available in the standard TCAD tool-kit. However, these do not directly address the mechanism of terminal control. The terminal response or control functions can be used to do this very clearly.

Efficient computational technique for virtual partitioning

A numerically efficient approximation for virtual partitioning, a scheme for connection admission control, is considered. It shares the resource among several traffic classes in a fair and efficient manner using a state-dependent trunk reservation. In the absence of a product form, an approximation for the occupancy distribution for this multirate loss system was originally suggested by Borst and Mitra. Based on this approximation, a more numerically efficient approximation is developed here. It combines asymptotic approximation methods with recursive formulas in a way that the computational complexity is reduced by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, a modified approximation is derived such that its complexity scales independent of the state space. It avoids recursive formulas and thus is well suited for real-time computations, but with reduced accuracy. Numerical results show the computational efficiency of the new approximations and their accuracy is compared with the simulation results. It is clearly shown that this accuracy is comparable to that of the existing approximation methods.

A simplified computational technique for the analysis of self-excited induction generators considering the core loss resistance

A simplified technique has been developed for accurately evaluating the steady-state performance of self-excited induction generator (SEIG). This proposed technique employs nodal analysis of the equivalent circuit of SEIG, taking the core loss resistance (Rm) also into consideration. This circuit has no voltage or current source and hence the net value of its complex nodal admittance becomes zero. The real and imaginary parts of this admittance, are then individually equated to zero and a closed-form expression for per unit (pu) speed (b), without involving the magnetizing reactance (Xm), is easily obtained in a few steps, for the specified pu frequency (a). Then, the expressions for Xm and Rm are also obtained. Subsequently, the complete performance of the SEIG is evaluated using the equivalent circuit. It is also shown that the proposed technique does not require lengthy complex derivations and it takes much less computational time, compared to the other commonly used methods for the analysis of SEIG. Test results, obtained on a three-phase, 4-pole, 3.7 kW, 230 V SEIG very closely agree with the computed values. The formulated technique is also slightly modified to make it applicable, if the performance evaluation is needed for a given pu speed.

The free vibration response is helpful to understand the dynamic characteristics of parametric system, and further could be used as important information source for the failure diagnosis and health monitoring of structure. In this paper, the free vibration response of a multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) parametric system is approached as a closed-form solution, a special trigonometric series with a linear combination of the principal oscillation frequency and the parametric excitation frequency. By algebra operation of harmonic balance, the parametric equation can be transformed into a linear homogeneous algebraic equation, on which the characteristic equation is determined and some important solutions are given. Main contribution of the presented technique is that it not only solves the computational problem of principal oscillation frequencies and modes with high computational accuracy, but also gives the splitting mode, which is the amplitude ratio of the combined harmonic resonance in the parametric system. Besides, the mathematical approximation reflects the physic characteristics in the free vibration response of parametric system. An example of real life is used to illustrate the applicability of the presented computational technique. The more expansion terms in approximation series, the smaller the computational error. Therefore, the given approximation provides a powerful computational tool for the free vibration response in the MDOF parametric system. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A computational technique is proposed for the analysis and design optimization of inductive-type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) with variable impedance for power systems application. The technique is applicable for a wide range A magnet systems. The paper is focused on the analysis of electromagnetic transients. A methodological example of a model SFCL is presented. Numerical experiments are described to study nonlinear effects at saturated and unsaturated states. Results demonstrate that the nonlinear magnetic behavior of the SFCL components affects noticeably the accuracy of predictions.

A novel technique for solving nonlinear equations-a basic problem in science and engineering-is presented in this work. This study tackles the drawbacks of conventional analysis, which frequently rely on Taylor series expansions and higher-order derivative assumptions, while highlighting the importance of high-order convergence techniques in computational mathematics. We expand the theoretical framework by concentrating solely on first-derivative-based local convergence analysis, whereas earlier research used Taylor expansions up to the eighth derivative to analyze an optimal family of eighth-order numerical scheme, even though they only used the first derivative in calculations. In addition, the proposed method is extended to parallel methods capable of finding all nonlinear equation solutions simultaneously with and without derivative evaluations;these developed techniques achieve convergence orders eighth and twelfth, respectively. A Local Convergence Theorem is used to define the domain of the convergence radius, which gives a systematic method for selecting optimal initial guesses and enhancing convergence behavior. Numerical outcomes on benchmark engineering problems reveal that the proposed methods are more efficient and stable as compared exiting method solutions, particularly in terms of residual error, error graph, computational time in seconds, percentage computational efficiency and computational cost. These results assist the development of advanced high-order iterative techniques that improve nonlinear problem-solving accuracy and efficiency while simultaneously ensuring resilience and theoretical soundness.

This study comprehensively explores the (3+1)-dimensional Mikhailov-Novikov-Wang (MNM) integrable equation, with the primary objective of elucidating its physical manifestations and establishing connections with analogous nonlinear evolution equations. The investigated model holds significant physical meaning across various disciplines within mathematical physics. Primarily, it serves as a fundamental model for understanding nonlinear wave propagation phenomena, offering insights into wave behaviors in complex media. Moreover, its relevance extends to nonlinear optics, where it governs the dynamics of optical pulses and solitons crucial for optical communication and signal processing technologies. Employing analytical methodologies, namely the unified (UF), Khater II (***) method, and He's variational iteration (HVI) method, both numerical and analytical solutions are meticulously examined. Through this investigation, the intricate behaviors of the equation are systematically unveiled, shedding illuminating insights on various physical phenomena, notably including wave propagation in complex media and nonlinear optics. The outcomes not only underscore the efficacy of the analytical techniques deployed but also accentuate the equation's pivotal role in modeling a broad spectrum of nonlinear wave dynamics. Consequently, this research significantly advances our comprehension of complex physical systems governed by nonlinear dynamics, thereby contributing notably to interdisciplinary pursuits in mathematical physics.

Novel Optimization Approach to Control the Nonlinear Vibrations of a Real Time Balancer System Under Unknown Disturbances

PurposeThis study presents a novel optimization algorithm which optimize the controller parameters of a nonlinear ball balancer system. Proposed approach is successfully balancing a ball over a rectangular plate under the presence of continuous *** develop the proposed computational technique, Giza pyramid construction algorithm is improved by introducing "Command Phase" and "Co-operate Phase". This improvement is responsible for the development of proposed HGPCTLBO (Hybrid Giza Pyramid Construction Teaching Learning Based Optimization) algorithm. The developed algorithm is optimizing the unconstrained parameters of proportional integral and derivative controller, which controls the nonlinear vibrations of rectangular plate and achieves proper balancing of ball over this rectangular plate. This scheme is capable of handling the unknown but bounded disturbances/vibrations with comfort. Initially, the mathematical modelling of balancer system is obtained using a two degree of freedom ball balancer system under the presence of unknown but bounded *** Square Error (ISE), Integral of Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral of the Time weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) are used as control fitness functions. MATLAB/Simulink platform is used to demonstrate the simulation as well as real time results while proving the dominance of proposed work over the work available in literature.

Modelling of corona discharge of a tri-electrode system for electrostatic separation processes

The study presents a detailed experimental and numerical analysis of the corona characteristics of a proposed tri-electrode system' for electrostatic separation applications. The system consists of an ionising wire, a movable auxiliary wire and a non-ionising cylinder, having the same voltage and placed parallel above a grounded plate. A computational technique coupling the method of characteristics and the charge simulation method is developed to model the corona governing equations of the proposed configuration. Influence of the auxiliary wire's position on field modulation of the ionising wire, corona onset and switching on/off of the discharge is established both numerically and experimentally. Dependence of the spatial distributions of the electric field and current density on the system's geometrical characteristics is evaluated and assessed. The study includes a physical model of the corona discharge of this particular electrode arrangement and demonstrates the configuration's specific features and advantages as compared with the earlier designs. The computed results compared favourably well with experiments.
