This study describes the development and evaluation of a semiautomatic myocyte edge-detector using digital image processing. The algorithm was developed in Matlab 6.0 using the SDC Morphology toolbox. Its conceptual basis is the mathematical morphology theory together with the watershed and Euclidean distance transformations. The algorithm enables the user to select cells within an image for automatic detection of their borders and calculation of their surface areas;these areas are determined by adding the pixels within each myocyte's boundaries. The algorithm was applied to images of cultured ventricular myocytes from neonatal rats. The edge-detector allowed the identification and quantification of morphometric alterations in cultured isolated myocytes induced by 72 hours of exposure to a hypertrophic agent (50 mu M phenylephrine). There was a significant increase in the mean surface area of the phenylephrine-treated cells compared with the control cells (p<0.05), corresponding to cellular hypertrophy of approximately 50%. In conclusion, this edge-detector provides a rapid, repeatable and accurate measurement of cell surface areas in a standardized manner. Other possible applications include morphologic measurement of other types of cultured cells and analysis of time-related morphometric changes in adult cardiac myocytes.

This work describes in detail a computational tool designed to study performance indicators of a four-stage transformer-based single-phase cascaded multilevel inverter. The proposed system integrates simulation, on-line measurement, control and signal processing providing automating testing functionality to optimize the performance of the inverter with base on indicators such as Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), partial and global efficiency and power balance between the stages. The computational component of the tool was developed in LabVIEW providing not only didactic interactivity with the user through the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) but also a reliable interconnection with the power converter and the instruments of the experimental setup. The hardware component was developed integrating the power converter prototype, an acquisition card and electronic circuits providing measurement, conditioning, digital control and gate driving functions. Experimental results obtained from automatic tests are presented showing potentiality of the tool to support research activities related with this type of power converters.

Food processing and conservation represent decisive factors for the sustainability of the planet given the significant growth of the world population in the last decades. Therefore, the cooling of any food products has been subject of study and improvement in order to ensure the food supply with good quality and safety. A computational tool for the assessment of the energy performance of agrifood industries that use refrigeration systems was developed. It aims to promote the improvement of the energy efficiency of this industrial sector. The computational tool for analysis of the energy profile is based on a set of characteristic parameters used for the development of correlations, including the amount of raw material, annual energy consumption and volume of cold stores. In this paper, the developed computational tool was applied to companies in the horticultural sector, specifically to resale-type companies. The results obtained help on the decision making of practice measures for the improvement of the energy efficiency.

Brazilian pre-salt reservoirs represent the discovery of large amounts of light oil, but at high pressures and containing high concentration of CO2. Proper parameter estimation procedures are essential to perform more accurate predictions of their thermodynamic properties. Therefore, two new methodologies for such calculations have been implemented here: by applying simultaneously VLE and LLE to the metric;and by handling water content in dew point conditions. Utilizing the Cubic-Plus-Association (CPA) EoS, they were employed to obtain new parameters for water. Also, new parameters were obtained for H2O + CO2 mixtures, whose average absolute deviation in water content at high pressures fell from 24% to 3% compared to previous publications. The same procedure was performed for other aqueous mixtures containing H2S and light hydrocarbons. Finally, this study has been applied into a natural gas compressing simulation with CO2, studying streams properties comparing the parameters obtained in this work with the literature. A new computational tool for the fatigue life prediction of composite materials, designated CCfatigue, is presented in this paper. This new software has been developed based on a well-established phenomenological fatigue life prediction methodology. It is capable of performing the calculations necessary to estimate the fatigue life of composite materials under complex cyclic stress states of variable amplitude. Although the software allows the benchmarking of several modules encountered in a complete fatigue life prediction methodology, this paper focuses on the presentation of the software framework and the demonstration of its applicability through the evaluation of the effect of the failure criterion on the fatigue life prediction of the examined materials. Different methods were chosen, programmed and added to the CCfatigue library in order to cover most of the existing concepts regarding the problem of multiaxial fatigue modeling and prediction. The theoretical results produced by the developed software, when compared to available experimental data, proved that there is a prominent effect of the selected fatigue failure module on the estimated lifetime of composite materials loaded under irregular loading patterns. Targeted Indication of Imaging for Detection of Vesicoureteric Reflux after Pediatric Febrile Urinary Tract Infections Based on a Multiparametric computational tool

Objectives Diagnostic workup after febrile urinary tract infections (fUTIs) in children remains a matter of debate. The authors aimed to evaluate multiple parameters in order to design a predictive tool enabling a targeted indication of voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). Methods Records of 383 consecutive children who underwent a VCUG as well as a dimercaptosuccinic-acid (DMSA) scan after febrile urinary tract infections (fUTIs) at a single institution between 04/2009 and 06/2014 were reviewed. Twenty parameters were recorded. After regression analysis, 6 parameters were incorporated into a computational tool aiming at a targeted indication of an eventual VCUG. The performance of the tool was prospectively tested on 100 patients. Results Postpyelonephritic alterations on DMSA, duplex systems, age 1-3 y, duration of fever >3 d, >2 fUTIs before VCUG and abnormal sonography findings were identified as significant predictors (p < 0.05 each);the presence of bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) was negatively associated with vesicoureteric reflux (VUR). The resulting computational tool achieved an Area under the curve (AUC) of 0.686 (CI 0.633-0.740). Prospective evaluation (100 new patients) revealed a sensitivity of 85.1%, a specificity of 49.1%, a positive predictive value of 59.7% and a negative predictive value of 78.7%. Conclusions The differentiated indication of a VCUG based on the use of a tool was efficient in optimizing the specificity of the diagnostic algorithm after fUTIs. The tool outperformed other common clinical approaches in terms of VUR detection and VCUG frequency. After validation and further refinement in a multicentric approach, this strategy could significantly enhance VUR detection whilst reducing the number of VCUGs.

An automated computational tool for offshore supply vessels’ structural preliminary design

This work presents the application of the rules of the Classification Society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for steel vessels in a development of an Excel computational tool that allows to speed up the preliminary structural design calculation process, from several days to minutes, with no precision loss, based on the main particulars and a few structural characteristics, automating everything that does not depend on decision-making. This tool is intended to be a first of a few to perform the required calculations for the preliminary structural design, in this case, applied to Offshore Support Vessels. Once the frame type, the selection of the commercial steel type, and manufacturer are prescribed by the user, all the rules are automatically calculated, all the thicknesses are computed and presented, and rounded up to the commercial values and which reinforcements need to be dimensioned are defined. The user then should dimension these structural elements by selecting the profile type, thickness and height of the web, and thickness and length of the flange, such as stiffeners and/or girders of the bottom, double bottom, sides, double sides, decks, and bulkheads;solid and open floor, side stringers, frames, bottom and deck girders, deck transverses, bulkhead girders, and webs. Besides verifying if the structural strength values are in accordance with the classification society rules in each and every step of the dimensioning process, the program also shows a sketch of the Midship Section that is redrawn at each decision change of the user. The program also verifies the global structural resistance;calculates the steel area, the hull girder section modulus, and moment of inertia;compares these values with the minimum rules requirements;and analyzes if the ship fulfills the longitudinal resistance. Soon after, based on the midship section, the sectional area and the transverse bulkheads positions, the program estimates the steel weight, and center of gravity of the

Bonded Joints Design Aided by computational tool

In order to aid the design of bonded joints, a computational tool named System of Analysis for Joints (SAJ) was developed. The software can analyze single and double lap bonded joint with composite -composite or metal -composite materials as adherent parts. Thus, SAJ can calculate the stress distribution, loads and displacements. Their results were compared tofinite element software (413210USD (TM)) and to specific composite analysis software (ES4Comp (TM)). After that, a study about the influence of-joint design parameters on the mechanical behavior of the bonded joint was carried out. In regards to parametric study,SAJ leads to some conclusions, which can be used as a guide during the product design process. Therefore, aided by the computational tool, it is possible to perform a conceptual and preliminary design of bonded joints with more accuracy and varying many parameters (materials;fiber orientation and stacking sequence of the laminate;thickness;overlap length).

A computational tool for designing BWRO systems with spiral wound modules

Deficiencies in commercial programs for the design of RO systems motivate the development of new ones that allow a flexible design and more realistic operating conditions for this type of systems. This work presents a computational tool for designing BWRO systems with spiral-wound modules. This algorithm has advantages over commercial software supplied by membrane manufacturers (such as ROSA, IMSDesign or Q(+) Projection Software), whose trial-and-error approach results in a waste of time for the designer. The proposed program has an additional boundary condition: to achieve the maximum flux recovery without scaling due to the precipitation of sparingly soluble mineral salts (e.g., silica (SiO2), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), calcium sulphate dihydrate (denoted simply as CaSO4), barium sulphate (BaSO4), strontium sulphate (SrSO4) and calcium fluoride (CaF2)). The designer's liberty to change the constrains established by membrane manufacturers provides the user with a desired safety margin and more flexibility. A range of 1 to 8 elements in each pressure vessel, 1 to 3 stages and the possibility of inter-stage pumping are taken into consideration. The results are displayed in a multi-filterable and sortable table. This allows the user to see all possible solutions and choose the most appropriate. The algorithm also has a predictive model of the performance of RO systems, providing an estimation of the performance of the selected RO system in the long term. The program has been validated using the experimental data of four full-scale BWRO desalination plants, proving that the proposed program is closer to actual data than the computational tool supplied by the manufacturer.

A computational tool for estimating stress fields along a surface crack front

A combined experimental and computational method for determination of the singular and non-singular stress terms along the front of the 3D surface crack is proposed. It is suggested to evaluate the terms by means of comprehensive comparison between deformation responses on the structure surface in the vicinity of the crack obtained experimentally and from numerical solutions of the corresponding boundary problem of solid mechanics. As the deformation response, a local displacement field caused by the formation of a small hole at the tip of the crack recorded by digital speckle pattern interferometry may be considered. The proposed approach allows defining such real parameters of the structure as the active load conditions in the crack region and crack sizes. These parameters are used to solve the direct problem and to determine the stress intensity factor K-I and T-xx-, T-zz-stresses along the surface crack front by means of an improved technique of their calculation. The approach accuracy and stability at different conditions have been proved by means of numerical simulation that examined half-space with planar semi-elliptical surface crack under biaxial loading. So, the potential applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated. The biaxiality effect on K-I and T-xx, T-zz is discussed.
