As the final part in a series of articles on numerical simulations in solid-state NMR (Concepts Magn Reson 17A: 117-154, 2003 and Concepts Magn Reson Part A 18A: 1-23, 2003), aspects of simulations of NMR responses from powders are discussed. The underlying equations for powder averaging are derived, and it is demonstrated how powder averages may be estimated numerically. Orientational symmetry in solid-state NMR is summarized and exploited to achieve more efficient calculations. Explicit computer code in C/C++ is given for simulation of NMR spectra from powders containing (1) two homonuclear spins-1/2 in a static sample and (2) a heteronuclear two spin-1/2 system under magic-angle-spinning conditions. computer-assisted medication review for asthmatic patients as a basis for intervention - Constructing and validating an algorithmic computer instrument in pharmacy practice

Objective: To construct and validate a computer instrument that identifies asthma patients receiving - theoretically suboptimal drug therapy in community pharmacies, by the use of patient medication records. This selection enables the pharmacist to assist these patients in using medicines appropriately. Methods: According to Dutch asthma guidelines which describe a stepwise approach and in order to define correct profiles for the use at each level of these guidelines, the optimum use of drugs in the different levels in asthma treatment was expressed in defined daily doses (DDDs) per pharmacological drug-group during a period of one year. An algorithmic computer instrument was developed to select patients with medication use deviant from these profiles. By using nine different selection profiles, the computer instrument stratified patients according to the medication records filed in the pharmacy computer. Patient medication records in four community pharmacies were investigated to validate the selection profiles as indicators for theoretically suboptimal drug use by asthma patients. The validation was performed by comparing the professional judgement of participating pharmacists with the selections made by the computer. Main outcome measure: Positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the selection made by algorithmic computer instrument. Rate of false-positive results. Results: The computer instrument identified asthma patients using theoretically suboptimal drug therapy with approximately 95% predictive value compared with the professional judgement of the pharmacists. The rate of false-positive results was 5%. Conclusion: The results of the algorithmic computer instrument and the professional judgement of the pharmacists are in close agreement. Introduce computer into the choice of marine data quality optimization control method;use hypergeometric distribution model to give the residual set of various marine quality control methods;based on computer algorithm, search and compare the residual set of each quality control method, and finally select Optimized marine data quality control method. Finally, the feasibility of the method is verified through the quality control of marine data at a certain sea area monitoring station.

Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) logic elements offer advantages over bipolar logic elements, such as smaller size, complexity, and power consumption, as well as more flexibility and versatility. Since MOS is playing a major role in large-scale integration (LSI), synthesis of MOS networks with a large number of variables is very important. In this paper, an efficient algorithm for computer-aided synthesis of MOS combinational logic networks is presented. The algorithm can synthesize both completely and incompletely specified switching functions ofa large number ofvariables. It rapidly generates an easily testable MOS network with a near-minimum number of MOS complex cells and field-effect transistors (FET‘s). A 10-variable example is given to illustrate the algorithm step-by-step. The algorithm has been programmed in Fortran IV for SPERRY UNIVAC 1108. Many randomly generated switching functions of various numbers of variables have been executed by the computer and the required amounts of computing time and memory space are reported. A computer system for the face stimulus assessment with application to the analysis of dementia

In this paper, we have developed a computer system for evaluating elements in the standardized image of the human face in the face stimulus assessment (FSA) and applied it to the analysis of the FSA pictures by dementia patients. The system automatically and objectively evaluates several elements in the FSA by developing new computer algorithms and using existing computer systems for art assessments. The algorithm divides the FSA into several areas, finds the main color of each area, compares the main color with one of its surrounding areas, and then grades the elements. The reliabilities of gradings between the human raters, and between the human raters and the computer system were measured by quadratic weighted kappa for each element. The correlation analysis is applied to analyze the relation between the grade and degree of dementia, the factor analysis is then applied to discriminate the difference between groups of normal healthy people and dementia patients, and the regression analysis is applied to estimate the probability of dementia. The system proposed in this paper was verified using case studies and analysis of sample results. The system is expected to promote the usage of the FSA and ease the research of FSA validity. Realizing wider use of ceramic matrix composites requires the development of advanced structural analysis technologies. This article focuses on the use of interactive reliability models to predict component probability of failure. The deterministic Willam-Warnke failure criterion is the theoretical basis for the reliability model presented herein. The model has been incorporated into a test-bed software program. This computer program is coupled to a general-purpose finite element program. A simple structural problem is presented to illustrate the reliability model and the computer algorithm.

A computer algorithm is explained in order to determine the performance of capacitor self-excited induction generators (SEIG) taking the machine design details as the input data. The magnetisation characteristic which forms the basis of analysis is obtained using theB/Hcurve of the core material and by employing a curve-fitting technique. The predicted parameter and performance characteristics of a normal induction motor operating as SEIG are compared with corresponding experimental results. Effects of variation of realistic design parameters are studied to obtain guidelines on optimum design. Typical results on a range of normal induction machines are presented to assess their suitability as SEIG.

Many studies have attempted to monitor fatigue from electromyogram (EMG) signals. However, fatigue affects EMG in a subject-specific manner. We present here a subject-independent framework for monitoring the changes in EMG features that accompany muscle fatigue based on principal component analysis and factor analysis. The proposed framework is based on several time-and frequency-domain features, unlike most of the existing work, which is based on two to three features. Results show that latent factors obtained from factor analysis on these features provide a robust and unified framework. This framework learns a model from EMG signals of multiple subjects, that form a reference group, and monitors the changes in EMG features during a sustained submaximal contraction on a test subject on a scale from zero to one. The framework was tested on EMG signals collected from 12 muscles of eight healthy subjects. The distribution of factor scores of the test subject, when mapped onto the framework was similar for both the subject-specific and subject-independent cases.

In this paper, the control design problem of linear discrete-time uncertain systems with time-varying uncertainties is considered. A computer algorithm is developed to find the controller gains that asymptotically stabilize the uncertain systems. The stabilization scheme is based on the constructive use of Lyapunov theory. The theoretical results are applied to different examples.
