This paper presents a new tool designed to allow for rapid development and testing of different control algorithms for airborne spacing. This tool, Interval Management Modeling and Spacing Tool (IM MAST), is a fast-time, low-fidelity tool created to model the approach of aircraft to a runway, with a focus on their interactions with each other. Errors can be induced between pairs of aircraft by varying initial positions, winds, speed profiles, and altitude profiles. Results to-date show that only a few of the algorithms tested had poor behavior in the arrival and approach environment. The majority of the algorithms showed only minimal variation in performance under the test conditions. Trajectory-based algorithms showed high susceptibility to wind forecast errors, while performing marginally better than the other algorithms under other conditions. Trajectory-based algorithms have a sizable advantage, however, of being able to perform relative spacing operations between aircraft on different arrival routes and flight profiles without employing 'ghosting' methods. This comes at the higher cost of substantially increased complexity, however. Additionally, it was shown that earlier initiation of relative spacing operations provided more time for corrections to be made without any significant problems in the spacing operation itself. Initiating spacing farther out, however, would require more of the aircraft to begin spacing before they merge onto a common route.

This paper presents a robust space vector-based hysteresis current controller (SVBHCC) which does not use the back-emf information directly to produce the optimal pulse width modulation (PWM) switching pattern. The controller operation is based on a generalized reference vector which tracks the fundamental harmonic of the load voltage. This vector is calculated iteratively by monitoring the PWM pattern generated by the current controller itself. The generalized reference vector is a direct replacement for the back-emf vector used by other SVBHCC methods previously published in the literature. The main advantages of this new current control method are simplicity and improved current control quality. Two versions of the new control algorithm are presented and test results are shown for an electrical drive system designed around this type of current controller.

This paper presents a control method for regulating serially connected server voltages. Following the discussion of the proposed control method, both simulations and an experimental study are performed for validation. A simulation model is used to optimize system parameters for maximizing the system-level power conversion efficiency. For the experimental study, a test-bed consisting of four 12 V servers and four dual active bridge converters is built and the control method is implemented on a digital controller. The experimental measurements show that the proposed control method achieves successful voltage regulation of serially connected servers and a system-level power conversion efficiency as high as 99.89%.

A group of unmanned vehicles can provide essential support to human task forces in a variety of missions, like in search and rescue operations. A crucial factor for task coordination is to maintain a reliable connectivity among the autonomous platforms. Radio-frequency is the common technology adopted for unmanned systems to operate wirelessly. However, this technology has some limitations that can be mitigated by complementing it with optical wireless communications. In this paper, we propose the implementation of an optical wireless link between micro-scale unmanned systems: an aerial vehicle and a ground mobile robot. We describe a line-of-sight directed optical link between these platforms where the flying vehicle carries an optical transmitter while the mobile ground robot is equipped with an optical receiver. This light-based communication link requires to keep an adequate relative transmitter-receiver position to enhance the transmission rate. Therefore, we define a connectivity cone on top of the receiver such that if the transmitter stays inside of this cone a minimum bit rate can be guaranteed. Also, we propose a control algorithm for the aerial transmitter to get and stay within the connectivity cone. The performance of the control algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulations.

Steam parameters control problem in power plants with coal fired boilers is one of the most challenging problems. The steam parameters are extreme at the boiler outlet. The large time constants and nonlinearities are involved in the process model. In this paper, it was shown that the feedback linearization method can be applied to synthesise control system for this process. The derivation of the linearizing transformation is not an easy task. It requires symbolic solutions for ordinary differential equations. The proposed method was compared with PI and proportional state feedback control algorithms. Simulation experiments were carried out in different points of operation, with different heat distribution and in presence of unmodelled dynamics.

This paper presents a sensorless speed observer method of an induction motor using an artificial intelligent technique in field-oriented control system. Speed and rotor flux are estimated from only measurable variables, the stator voltages and currents. The proposed estimation algorithm uses a deterministic state observer combined with an intelligent adaptive mechanism based on fuzzy logic, and using a knowledge base on human expertise. The introducing of fuzzy logic is applied to achieve high-performance, a low sensibility to parameter variations and external influences. The developed algorithm is robust and efficient, it also assures precise speed estimation, a good trajectory tracking with the different prescribed dynamics. In order to verify its performances test the behavior of the control algorithm, numerical simulations are achieved. The performances of the induction motor drive have been analyzed under steady state and transient conditions. The simulation results have shown a good estimate speed and flux and an excellent tracking performance of the proposed control system, and have demonstrated convincingly the usefulness of adaptive observer based on fuzzy logic in variable speed drives with high performance.

The internet data center is growing swiftly in recent years as the Cloud computing is becoming popular. An internet data center is an apt example of a distributed network with dynamic loads, and a load balancing algorithm is needed in a data center to manage and distribute the loading to all server nodes appropriately. The implementation of a load balancer brings benefits to both the data center owner and Cloud users as it prolongs the lifespan of servers and improve the quality of service. To design a load balancing algorithm, various existing algorithms are studied. An average consensus algorithm is proposed for implementation in a network of server nodes. For verification purposes, the proposed algorithm is tested with various network topologies for its adaptability to distributed communication variance to the demand for scalability. The performance results are obtained through a series of experimental simulations;the results are then presented and analyzed in comparison to the conventional algorithm. In this paper, a Cartesian sensor-less force control method for industrial robots is proposed. The disturbance torques at each joint, generated by external forces at the endeffector of robot, are estimated using a disturbance observer, then they are converted to the force/moment in Cartesian space with the robot Jacobian. The force control algorithm is realized through a powerful position servo of industrial robot controller. Furthermore, the friction's harmful effect on the sensor-less force control is reduced using a high frequency dither signal. The validity of the proposed control algorithm is investigated through the experiments with industrial robots. Real application tests are conducted like a peg-in-hole assembly and a die casting application and contact stability with a stiff environment is also checked by a push task with various push levels.

The article is focused on a measurement system for ground reaction forces in a skid-steering mobile platform.
