Modular Multilevel Converter is more and more widely used in high voltage DC transmission system and high power motor drive system. It is a major topological structure for high power AC-DC converter. Due to the large module number, the complex control algorithm, and the high power user's back ground, the MMC model used for simulation should be as accurate as possible to simulate the details of how MMC works for the dynamic testing of the MMC controller. But so far, there is no sample simulation MMC model which can simulate the switching dynamic process. In this paper, one curve embedded full-bridge MMC modeling method with detailed representation of IGBT characteristics is proposed. This method is based on the switching curve referring and sample circuit calculation, and it is sample for implementation. Based on the simulation comparison test under Matlab/Simulink, the proposed method is proved to be correct.

Computational Social Science (CSS) is an emerging, interdisciplinary approach to the study of social systems. This chapter provides readers with an introduction to CSS, and discusses why examining the behavior of individuals and groups in social systems from an algorithmic perspective provides new and exciting analytic opportunities for the Intelligence Community and analytic tradecraft. Through the use of artificial societies, commonly referred to as Agent-Based Models (ABMs), intelligence analysts can improve strategic intelligence assessments by capitalizing on the scientific and tradecraft merits of computational simulation.

In this paper we design a hybrid predictive controller for the tracking of a sinusoidal reference signal. The stability and forward invariance of a set of points around the reference state, named the tracking ellipse, is established by using tools for hybrid dynamical systems. Moreover, prediction of solutions for a finite number of switching events is used to minimize the number of switches. The control algorithm is shown to be robust to small perturbations and input disturbances. Simulations illustrating the main results are included.

WebRTC is a promising standard for real- time communication in the browser. It supports transfer of delay sensitive real-time video and audio material using SRTP, as well as transfer of arbitrary data using SCTP. The congestion control algorithms of these two transport protocols are optimized for two different goals: While RTP tries to keep delays minimal, SCTP tries to maximize throughput. This contradiction leads to an excess in queuing delay and ultimately a deterioration of user experience when these protocols are used simultaneously. The work at hand introduces a novel algorithm for coupling the two transport protocols in order to achieve both goals at the same time. We have implemented our algorithm in the OMNeT++/INET simulation environment and present results to prove that the algorithm works as intended. We found that our approach keeps queuing delays in tolerable regions for all link configurations tested, enabling the concurrent use of WebRTC Media Channels and SCTP Data Channels independent of the queue length of the access router.

The issue of reallocating population figures from a set of geographical units onto another set of units has received a great deal of attention in the literature. Every other day, a new algorithm is proposed, claiming that it outperforms competitor procedures. Unfortunately, when the new (usually more complex) methods are applied to a new data set, the improvements attained are sometimes just marginal. The relationship cost-effectiveness of the solutions is case-dependent. The majority of studies have focused on large areas with heterogeneous population density distributions. The general conclusion is that as a rule more sophisticated methods are worth the effort. It could be argued, however, that when we work with a variable that varies gradually in relatively homogeneous small units, simple areal weighting methods could be sufficient and that ancillary variables would produce marginal improvements. For the case of reallocating census data, our study shows that, even under the above conditions, the most sophisticated approaches clearly yield the better results. After testing fourteen methods in Barcelona (Spain), the best results are attained using as ancillary variable the total dwelling area in each residential building. Our study shows the 3-D methods as generating the better outcomes followed by multiclass 2-D procedures, binary 2-D approaches and areal weighting and 1-D algorithms. The point-based interpolation procedures are by far the ones producing the worst estimates.

Gas-liquid cylindrical cyclone separators are widely used in several applications, including bulk separation of hydrocarbons. Recently, these separators have been considered for subsea separation because of their low weight and compact design. However, disadvantages associated with their design are the resulting fast dynamics and small operational volume, which make them highly sensitive to flow variations. There are two possible approaches for dealing with this problem: (1) increasing the operational volume or (2) improved control. The fast dynamics necessitates a fast and computationally inexpensive control algorithm. Therefore, in this paper, we consider a newly proposed nonlinear dynamic model containing unmeasured parameters to design a model predictive control algorithm for real-time offset-free optimal control, i.e., improved transient handling and product quality optimization. Offset-free optimal control is achieved by augmenting the states with integral error states of the controlled variables. The MPC algorithm with and without state feedback from the estimator is compared in simulations, both achieving offset-free optimal control.

State-of-art powered prosthetic legs are often controlled using a collection of joint impedance controllers designed for different phases of a walking cycle. Consequently, finite state machines are used to control transitions between different phases. This approach requires a large number of impedance parameters and switching rules to be tuned. Since one set of control parameters cannot be used across different amputees, clinicians spend enormous time tuning these gains for each patient. This paper proposes a virtual constraint-based control scheme with a smaller set of control parameters, which are automatically tuned in real-time using an extremum seeking controller (ESC). ESC, being a model-free control method, assumes no prior knowledge of either the prosthesis or human. Using a singular perturbation analysis, we prove that the virtual constraint tracking errors are small and the PD gains remain bounded. Simulations demonstrate that our ESC-based method is capable of adapting the virtual-constraint based control parameters for amputees with different masses.

Assessment of a Severity-Based Algorithm to Detect Signals of Severe Drug-Induced Liver Injury Using Spontaneous Reporting Database

Background Severe drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major safety concern in pharmacovigilance. It would be beneficial to develop a robust method for early detection of hepatic safety signals. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the performance of a severity-based algorithm in detecting signals of severe DILI. Method We assessed a method using preferred terms (PTs) listed in the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities. PTs were grouped into three categories based on severity and relatedness of liver injury (category A: typical for severe DILI;category B: atypical for DILI regardless of severity;category C: severity not specified regardless of etiology). The disproportionality of these categories was then analyzed using the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Adverse Event Reporting System based on the empirical Bayesian geometric mean (EBGM). A lower bound of the 90% confidence interval of the EBGM (EB05) > 2 for category A in two continuous quarters was used to define a signal of severe DILI. Selected drugs with (positive controls) and without (negative controls) known hepatotoxicity were tested. Time to initiation of regulatory action (none, withdrawal, or boxed warning) was compared and contrasted using the severity-based algorithm and a previously published algorithm. Results Our method detected signals of severe DILI in the fourth quarter (EB05 = 8.83), twenty third quarter (EB05 = 2.14), and tenth quarter (EB05 = 3.14) for troglitazone, leflunomide, and telithromycin, respectively, after launch in the US market. Compared with the previously published algorithm, the severity-based algorithm proposed in our study identified a signal of severe DILI in the same quarter (troglitazone and telithromycin) or earlier (leflunomide) for the positive controls. The paper describes a probabilistic view of QoS (quality of service) assurances provided by a distributed information system (DIS). The service specs factor in the inaccuracies and partial knowledge of system models pertaining to failures of infrastructure components. These uncertainties have a compounded effect on the robustness of applications running on a DIS. We associate quantitative properties to the objects managed by a middleware service-layer in terms of probabilistic assertions: such as stability and boundedness in object behaviors. The properties are derived by analyzing the component-level behaviors composed into a service-layer object. For e. g., the fault-tolerance of a replicated data system is determined from individual data server failure probabilities. Such metrics enable accurate decision-making by the application-layer control algorithms when responding to fault events. The paper describes a case study of web-based information services, using server replication mechanisms.
