This paper presents the use of hybrid energy storage, composed of ultracapacitor and Lithium-ion battery, to improve wind power stability. A control algorithm based on artificial neural network is proposed to manage the run-time use of the hybrid energy storage system to (1) optimize wind power predictability hence power grid stability, and (2) minimize the overall lifetime cost of the energy storage system. Evaluations using wind farm data demonstrate that, compared with two recently proposed control methods, the proposed control algorithm can extend system lifetime by 62% and 143%, and reduce the overall lifetime energy storage system cost (20 years) by 41% and 59%, respectively.

In conventional power system operation, droop control methods are used to facilitate load sharing among different generation sources. This method compensates for both active and reactive power imbalances by adjusting the output voltage magnitude and frequency of the generating unit. Both P-ω and Q-V droops have been used in synchronous machines for decades. Similar droop controllers were used in this study to develop a control algorithm for a three-phase isolated (islanded) inverter. Controllers modeled in a synchronous dq reference frame were simulated in PLECS and validated with the hardware setup. A small-signal model based on an averaged model of the inverter was developed to study the system's dynamics. The accuracy of this mathematical model was then verified using the data obtained from the experimental and simulation results. This validated model is a useful tool for the further dynamic analysis of a microgrid.

A finite control set model predictive control strategy for the control of the stator currents of a synchronous reluctance motor driven by a three-level neutral point clamped inverter is presented in this paper. The presented algorithm minimizes the stator current distortions while operating the drive system at switching frequencies of a few hundred Hertz. Moreover, the power electronic converter is protected by overcurrents and/or overvoltages owing to a hard constraint imposed on the stator currents. To efficiently solve the underlying integer nonlinear optimization problem a sphere decoding algorithm serves as optimizer. To this end, a numerical calculation of the unconstrained solution of the optimization problem is proposed, along with modifications in the algorithm proposed in [1] so as to meet the above-mentioned control objectives. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

This paper describes a framework to support the electricity distribution system operator (DSO) in identifying the appropriate control strategy in a system due to the stochastic nature of the integrated intermittent distributed generation. A distributed optimization and control algorithm is applied in order to determine the look-ahead allocation of distributed resources for risk mitigation, as well as real-time controls to attempt to ensure that the electrical distribution system (DS) is managed in a reliable and cost-effective manner. The management of these active resources will thus ensure that the DS can be optimized to operate in an efficient manner while providing adequate security.

Safety is one of the most important requirements in robotic rehabilitation systems. Vulnerable users may get injured or feel pain by a sudden impact, i.e. large assistive torque or fast change in the assistive torque from the rehabilitation systems. In automated rehabilitation systems, the desired torque is determined in real-time based on measurements that represent the patient's status. Abrupt changes of the desired torque command may cause the impact on the patient during the operation of the rehabilitation system. In this paper, a proxy is placed between the desired position and current position of the actuator as a safety buffer to prevent impacts from the rehabilitation system. The actuator tracks the proxy as accurate as possible with a sliding mode controller, which compensates for the modeling uncertainties and nonlinearities in the actuator. The performance of the proposed control algorithm has been verified by experiments with a compact series elastic actuator installed at the knee joint of an orthotic.

It is widely known that Ethernet networks are susceptible to high-power electromagnetics (HPEM). Even with electromagnetic disturbance levels below the threshold, at which a hardware failure of components can be observed, there are impacts on the data transmission between two computers. A typical effect on the application level is a decrease of the maximum data rate between two endpoints with a higher field strength until the transmission completely breaks down. To quantify the effect of electromagnetic disturbances it is necessary to distinguish between effects which are software-related due to control algorithms and applications behaviour on higher protocol layers, and hardware-related effects caused by physical interaction between the network components and the disturbance. This paper shows the results of a new measurement method compared to classical tests using a FTP data transmission.

The half-bridge converter with phase-shifted active rectifier allows us to avoid drawbacks of the traditional hard-switched half-bridge converter with a diode rectifier, such as high semiconductor losses and parasitic oscillations in the inverter. This paper introduces a novel improved control algorithm for a full-bridge phase-shifted active rectifier, allowing reduction of the energy circulation during its operation. The advantages of the algorithm are verified with a small-scale converter prototype. The experimental results were found in full accordance with expected waveforms.

This paper presents and approach for optimizing the operation of a micro-Combined Heat and Power system (μCHP) in a real time price market scenario. The objective is to determine the optimal operation set-point for the μCHP for the following five minutes according to the real-time price signal sent by the System Operator (SO) so as to maximise the profits obtained from the operation of the device while thermal demand requirements are fulfilled. The control algorithm makes use of the relative price concept in the decision making process as well as price sensitivity information of the end-user. Results of the simulated case studies show the feasibility of the proposed model for controlling the operation of a μCHP in a real-time price based market scenario in terms of economical profitability compared with a conventional thermostat based operation mode.

In this paper, a practical solution for suppression of voltage harmonics in high-voltage power supplies is proposed. The solution is based on three single-phase series active-power filters (SAPF) inserted in a common point of a synchronous generator (SG) through an injection transformer. Because of the SAPF position, implementation of low-voltage components enabling higher switching frequencies needed to compensate harmonics with a sufficient level of precision is fully justified. Combined with a sophisticated repetitive control algorithm and using a superior digital signal controller (DSC), an extremely low harmonic distortion in a large frequency span is achieved.

The test bed for the Measurement Science Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) includes a robot arm on a rail, conveyers, mannequins and a custom designed automated guided vehicle (AGV). The NIST AGV includes an onboard personal computer and control software, safety sensors, and an absolute positioning sensor system among other useful and research tools, sensors and equipment. A NIST-developed, smart diagnostic tool was used to design, adjust, and monitor vehicle parameters and control algorithms to enable robust autonomous vehicle control. The NIST Diagnostics Tool and its application to the NIST AGV are presented in this paper.
