Energy-Efficient Reliability-Aware Scheduling Algorithm on Heterogeneous Systems

The amount of energy needed to operate high-performance computing systems increases regularly since some years at a high pace, and the energy consumption has attracted a great deal of attention. Moreover, high energy consumption inevitably contains failures and reduces system reliability. However, there has been considerably less work of simultaneous management of system performance, reliability, and energy consumption on heterogeneous systems. In this paper, we first build the precedence-constrained parallel applications and energy consumption model. Then, we deduce the relation between reliability and processor frequencies and get their parameters approximation value by least squares curve fitting method. Thirdly, we establish a task execution reliability model and formulate this reliability and energy aware scheduling problem as a linear programming. Lastly, we propose a heuristic Reliability-Energy Aware Scheduling (REAS) algorithm to solve this problem, which can get good tradeoff among system performance, reliability, and energy consumption with lower complexity. Our extensive simulation performance evaluation study clearly demonstrates the tradeoff performance of our proposed heuristic algorithm.

Short-Term Wind Speed Forecasting Using the Data Processing Approach and the Support Vector Machine Model Optimized by the Improved Cuckoo Search Parameter Estimation Algorithm

Power systems could be at risk when the power-grid collapse accident occurs. As a clean and renewable resource, wind energy plays an increasingly vital role in reducing air pollution and wind power generation becomes an important way to produce electrical power. Therefore, accurate wind power and wind speed forecasting are in need. In this research, a novel short-term wind speed forecasting portfolio has been proposed using the following three procedures: ( I) data preprocessing: apart from the regular normalization preprocessing, the data are preprocessed through empirical model decomposition ( EMD), which reduces the effect of noise on the wind speed data;( II) artificially intelligent parameter optimization introduction: the unknown parameters in the support vector machine ( SVM) model are optimized by the cuckoo search ( CS) algorithm;( III) parameter optimization approach modification: an improved parameter optimization approach, called the SDCS model, based on the CS algorithm and the steepest descent ( SD) method is proposed. The comparison results show that the simple and effective portfolio EMD-SDCS-SVM produces promising predictions and has better performance than the individual forecasting components, with very small rootmean squared errors and mean absolute percentage errors.

Active control of an innovative seat suspension system with acceleration measurement based friction estimation

In this paper, an innovative active seat suspension system for vehicles is presented. This seat suspension prototype is built with two low cost actuators each of which has one rotary motor and one gear reducer. A H-infinity controller with friction compensation is designed for the seat suspension control system where the friction is estimated and compensated based on the measurement of seat acceleration. This principal aim of this research was to control the low frequency vibration transferred or amplified by the vehicle (chassis) suspension, and to maintain the passivity of the seat suspension at high frequency (isolation vibration) while taking into consideration the trade-off between the active seat suspension cost and its high frequency performance. Sinusoidal excitations of 1-4.5 Hz were applied to test the active seat suspension both when controlled and when uncontrolled and this is compared with a well-tuned passive heavy duty vehicle seat suspension. The results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm within the tested frequencies. Further tests were conducted using the excitations generated from a quarter-car model under bump and random road profiles. The bump road tests indicate the controlled active seat suspension has good transient response performance. The Power Spectral Density (PSD) method and ISO 2631-1 standards were applied to analyse the seat suspension's acceleration under random road conditions. Although some low magnitude and high frequency noise will inevitably be introduced by the active system, the weighted-frequency Root Mean Square (RMS) acceleration shows that this may not have a large effect on ride comfort. In fact, the ride comfort is improved from being an 'a little uncomfortable' to a 'not uncomfortable' level when compared with the well-tuned passive seat suspension. MOSAR: A Multi-Objective Strategy for Hiding Sensitive Association Rules Using Genetic Algorithm

It seems very realistic to find different aspects in a problem solution like rule hiding. Based on this point of view, Availability, Sensitivity, and Conflict are defined as the novel measurements to detect specific transactions in each transactional database in an effective way. At this point, it will be helpful for decision makers to consider such aspects on their solutions to hide sensitive association rules (ARs). Accordingly, the authors put forward a fitness function of genetic algorithm adjusted to the proposed measurements for hiding sensitive rules of the original database. Experimental study shows that the MOSAR algorithm outperforms traditional approach (Decrease Support of Right Hand Side algorithm) in view of reducing ARs in conflict with sensitive ARs, as a side effect in sensitive rule hiding process. Furthermore, this approach is applicable to do its best in banking systems, where database is to be shared through the networks, to protect strategic information after a serious attack.

Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Direct Inverse Control for Controlling the Power Level of the Indonesian Multipurpose Reactor

A neural network-direct inverse control (NN-DIC) has been simulated to automatically control the power level of nuclear reactors. This method has been tested on an Indonesian pool type multipurpose reactor, namely, Reaktor Serba Guna-GA Siwabessy (RSG-GAS). The result confirmed that this method still cannot minimize errors and shorten the learning process time. A new method is therefore needed which will improve the performance of the DIC. The objective of this study is to develop a particle swarm optimization-based direct inverse control (PSO-DIC) to overcome the weaknesses of the NN-DIC. In the proposed PSO-DIC, the PSO algorithm is integrated into the DIC technique to train the weights of the DIC controller. This integration is able to accelerate the learning process. To improve the performance of the system identification, a backpropagation (BP) algorithm is introduced into the PSO algorithm. To show the feasibility and effectiveness of this proposed PSO-DIC technique, a case study on power level control of RSG-GAS is performed. The simulation results confirm that the PSO-DIC has better performance than NN-DIC. The new developed PSO-DIC has smaller steady-state error and less overshoot and oscillation.

Terminal control of the trajectory and rotational motion of an active spacecraft during a rendezvous with a passive spacecraft

In this work, the problem of a spacecraft's rendezvous is considered in the radial coordinate system, taking into consideration the effect of the difference gravitational acceleration, using a control algorithm with the prediction model based on the minimization of the generalized work functional. The analytical formulas have been derived to compute the control actions when the motion of the center of mass and the motion about the center of mass, when solving the parametric optimization problem, are considered in a unified terminal formulation. The analytical solution is based on a special prediction model that has an analytical solution in the advanced modeling of the rendezvous process. The results of modeling a spacecraft's rendezvous are presented.

Path Planning and Replanning for Mobile Robot Navigation on 3D Terrain: An Approach Based on Geodesic

In this paper, mobile robot navigation on a 3D terrain with a single obstacle is addressed. The terrain is modelled as a smooth, complete manifold with well-defined tangent planes and the hazardous region is modelled as an enclosing circle with a hazard grade tuned radius representing the obstacle projected onto the terrain to allow efficient path-obstacle intersection checking. To resolve the intersections along the initial geodesic, by resorting to the geodesic ideas from differential geometry on surfaces and manifolds, we present a geodesic-based planning and replanning algorithm as a new method for obstacle avoidance on a 3D terrain without using boundary following on the obstacle surface. The replanning algorithm generates two new paths, each a composition of two geodesics, connected via critical points whose locations are found to be heavily relying on the exploration of the terrain via directional scanning on the tangent plane at the first intersection point of the initial geodesic with the circle. An advantage of this geodesic path replanning procedure is that traversability of terrain on which the detour path traverses could be explored based on the local Gauss-Bonnet Theorem of the geodesic triangle at the planning stage. A simulation demonstrates the practicality of the analytical geodesic replanning procedure for navigating a constant speed point robot on a 3D hill-like terrain.

On the problem of optimal spacecraft attitude control

The problem of the optimal control of a spacecraft reorientation from an arbitrary initial position into a prescribed final angular position is studied. For optimization, we use a generalized integral index characterizing the complexity of the rotation trajectory from the viewpoint of the "distance covered," which is the generalized rotation angle that takes into account the different weights of the spacecraft axes in the sense of expenditures (of fuel, time, or another irreplaceable resource) needed to rotate the spacecraft by the same angle. An analytical solution of this problem is obtained. Two versions of the optimal spacecraft slew maneuver problem (using the shortest trajectory) are considered-the quickest maneuver and a maneuver in the prescribed time. The optimal control problem is solved for several types of constraints on the control variables. The time of starting the deceleration is determined based on the actual motion parameters (mismatch angle and angular velocity) using the terminal control principles (based on the angular position and angular velocity measurements). An example and simulation results of the spacecraft dynamics under the optimal control are presented, which demonstrate the practical usefulness of the proposed control algorithms.

Single-objection function cannot describe the characteristics of the complicated hydrologic system. Consequently, it stands to reason that multiobjective functions are needed for calibration of hydrologic model. The multiobjective algorithms based on the theory of nondominate are employed to solve this multiobjective optimal problem. In this paper, a novel multiobjective optimization method based on differential evolution with adaptive Cauchy mutation and Chaos searching (MODE-CMCS) is proposed to optimize the daily streamflow forecasting model. Besides, to enhance the diversity performance of Pareto solutions, a more precise crowd distance assigner is presented in this paper. Furthermore, the traditional generalized spread metric (SP) is sensitive with the size of Pareto set. A novel diversity performance metric, which is independent of Pareto set size, is put forward in this research. The efficacy of the new algorithmMODE-CMCS is compared with the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) on a daily streamflow forecasting model based on support vector machine (SVM). The results verify that the performance of MODE-CMCS is superior to the NSGA-II for automatic calibration of hydrologic model.

A Two-Stage Assembly-Type Flowshop Scheduling Problem for Minimizing Total Tardiness

This research considers a two-stage assembly-type flowshop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the total tardiness. The first stage consists of two independent machines, and the second stage consists of a single machine. Two types of components are fabricated in the first stage, and then they are assembled in the second stage. Dominance properties and lower bounds are developed, and a branch and bound algorithm is presented that uses these properties and lower bounds as well as an upper bound obtained from a heuristic algorithm. The algorithm performance is evaluated using a series of computational experiments on randomly generated instances and the results are reported.
