First described in 1734, the extensor digitorum brevis manus (EDBM) is an anomalous extensor muscle found in the dorsum of the wrist and hand. Extensor muscle variants of the hand are not uncommon, and EDBM has an estimated reported incidence of approximately 2%. Although few extensor muscle variants become clinically significant, there is a paucity of literature discussing these anatomic variants, with most reports arising from cadaveric studies or isolated case series. Similarly, there are few established indications for surgical treatment of EDBM. In this case report, we describe the successful treatment of a young patient with persistently symptomatic anomalous extensor tendon with surgical excision and propose an algorithm for management after failure of conservative measures.

The capability of digital hologram reconstruction algorithms applied for the processing of holographic interferograms in finite-width fringes being recorded and reconstructed by the classical optical method is validated. Application of these algorithms, significantly simplifies the processing procedure. Results of the processing of the holographic interferogram of a bulk strain soliton performed by the two methods are demonstrated to be in a good agreement.

Integrate-and-fire neurons are time encoding machines that convert the amplitude of an analog signal into a nonuniform, strictly increasing sequence of spike times. Under certain conditions, the encoded signals can be reconstructed from the nonuniform spike time sequences using a time decoding machine. Time encoding and time decoding methods have been studied using the nonuniform sampling theory for band-limited spaces, as well as for generic shift-invariant spaces. This letter proposes a new framework for studying IF time encoding and decoding by reformulating the IF time encoding problem as a uniform sampling problem. This framework forms the basis for two new algorithms for reconstructing signals from spike time sequences. We demonstrate that the proposed reconstruction algorithms are faster, and thus better suited for real-time processing, while providing a similar level of accuracy, compared to the standard reconstruction algorithm.

Many machine learning problems, such as nonstationarity adaptation, outlier detection, dimensionality reduction, and conditional density estimation, can be effectively solved by using the ratio of probability densities. Since the naive two-step procedure of first estimating the probability densities and then taking their ratio performs poorly, methods to directly estimate the density ratio from two sets of samples without density estimation have been extensively studied recently. However, these methods are batch algorithms that use the whole data set to estimate the density ratio, and they are inefficient in the online setup, where training samples are provided sequentially and solutions are updated incrementally without storing previous samples. In this letter, we propose two online density-ratio estimators based on the adaptive regularization of weight vectors. Through experiments on inlier-based outlier detection, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methods.

We present a fast, efficient algorithm for learning an overcomplete dictionary for sparse representation of signals. The whole problem is considered as a minimization of the approximation error function with a coherence penalty for the dictionary atoms and with the sparsity regularization of the coefficient matrix. Because the problem is nonconvex and nonsmooth, this minimization problem cannot be solved efficiently by an ordinary optimization method. We propose a decomposition scheme and an alternating optimization that can turn the problem into a set of minimizations of piecewise quadratic and univariate subproblems, each of which is a single variable vector problem, of either one dictionary atom or one coefficient vector. Although the subproblems are still nonsmooth, remarkably they become much simpler so that we can find a closed-form solution by introducing a proximal operator. This leads to an efficient algorithm for sparse representation. To our knowledge, applying the proximal operator to the problem with an incoherence term and obtaining the optimal dictionary atoms in closed form with a proximal operator technique have not previously been studied. The main advantages of the proposed algorithm are that, as suggested by our analysis and simulation study, it has lower computational complexity and a higher convergence rate than state-of-the-art algorithms. In addition, for real applications, it shows good performance and significant reductions in computational time.

The efficiency of the wind power conversions systems can be greatly improved using an appropriate control algorithm. In this work, an adaptive robust control for a variable speed wind power generation is described. A robust aerodynamic torque observer is also designed in order to avoid the wind speed sensors. The proposed adaptive robust control law is based on a sliding mode control theory, that presents a good performance under system uncertainties. The stability analysis of the proposed controller under disturbances and parameter uncertainties is provided using the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally simulated results show, on the one hand that the proposed controller provides high-performance dynamic characteristics, and on the other hand that this scheme is robust with respect to plant parameter variations and external disturbances.
