There is much opportunity for innovation in the areas of design, development, and delivery of technical communication for "systems of systems." Systems can be extremely complex, and contain many subsystems and components. The presentation of technical communication for a system of systems adds layers of complexity both to explaining the basic concepts of the system and all the details required for each area of the system that may be applicable to each type of user or role, function, and operation. It becomes more critical and yet more difficult to provide clear and comprehensive overviews and details of a system and its subsystems and components, as the complexity increases.

If designing and developing optimal products, services, and information requires clarity and audience awareness, then developing ways to acquire customer input is a critical piece in the best development workflow solutions [43]. Seeking direct input from customers and learning how they use a product are the most effective methods for generating ideas for enhancements and innovations to the technical content that supports a product, as well as to the product itself [21]. Taking the steps to create opportunities for customer feedback enables direct customer input and establishes the proactive best practice of demonstrating to the customer that they are a top priority in the product development focus [34]. While there may not be a fixed agenda for an optimal customer meeting, there may, in fact, be a set of topics for discussion that comprise a set of best practices for gaining customer input for the user assistance [45]. Customer input helps provide requests for change and thus aids in managing change, raising the importance of a change and requirements management system [34, 52]. A change and requirements management system is even more critical in the context of application lifecycle management and globally distributed development [27, 49, 50, 55]. Managing relationships with customers leads to a two-way path for collaboration, both for helping customers solve their problems and for a company to enhance its products and overall success [26, 28].

To meet an immediate need in a new market, the corporation needed a customer document for installing a suite of tools that had previously been installed only by experienced service engineers. More than one support engineer had written a short document describing the installation tasks, but these documents pre-supposed a high level of expertise on the pail of the installer. The challenge presented to Information Engineering was to create, from two such documents, a text that a customer could use to install the software tools. With the help of a world-wide team, internet tools, and two virtual sessions following user-centered design practices, a customer-oriented document was successfully created quickly at very low cost. Professional communication has undergone a paradigmatic shift with the incorporation of digital technology such as ePubs into its instruction and practice. With these newer forms of professional communication come a new set of programmatic problems for educators: problems in receiving funding for the expensive technology necessary to create them;problems in finding the training necessary to prepare instructors to teach technologies that they themselves never received formal instruction in;and problems in supporting both the classroom and workplace instruction of these types of technical communication. Businesses, professional organizations, and even textbook publishing companies have begun to replace the traditional educational experience to answer this need. In addition to these problems, these new forms of professional communication require new methods of evaluation and assessment. In measuring the institutional and programmatic effectiveness of instruction in a rapidly changing, technology-intensive field is something professional communication programs may need to look closely at the assessment methodologies of other technology fields such as computer science and engineering technology.

This study suggests that computer documentation is a complex technical communication genre, encompassing all the texts that mediate between complex human activities and computer processes. Drawing on a historical study, it demonstrates that the varied forms given to documentation have a long history, extending back at least to the early days of commercial mainframe computing. The data suggests that (1) early forms of computer documentation were borrowed from existing genres, and (2) official and unofficial documentation existed concurrently, despite efforts to consolidate these divergent texts. The study thus provides a glimpse into the early experimental nature of documentation as writers struggled to find a meaningful way to communicate information about their organization's developing computer technology.
