A Two-Way Street: Green Big Data processing for a Greener Smart Grid

Integrating renewables into the mainstream energy market is pivotal for the green revolution promised by the smart grid. The real power behind realization of the smart grid goals lies in the volume, variety, velocity of the big data generated by a variety of sources. Nevertheless, the smart grid needs data centers to digest the big data for its profound green revolution. However, big data processing is the radix for data centers to be seen as energy black holes. Unless data centers are transformed into energy-efficient enterprises, big data are going to be responsible for superfluous energy burn, potentially reversing the smart grid genesis with regard to green environmental impact. This paper describes the role of the big data enterprise in envisioning the smart grid. We dissect the big data enterprise into six vital planes impacting the energy footprints of data centers. We present a survey of key strategies to make these six vital planes greener. Moreover, we present open challenges and directions in this context. We assert that a cross-plane approach toward a greener optimization is crucial. In this vein, we present a green orchestrator that is capable of incorporating different planes in an integrated fashion to boost energy profile of the big data enterprise.

Computing Safe Contention Bounds for Multicore Resources with Round-Robin and FIFO Arbitration

Numerous researchers have studied the contention that arises among tasks running in parallel on a multicore processor. Most of those studies seek to derive a tight and sound upper-bound for the worst-case delay with which a processor resource may serve an incoming request, when its access is arbitrated using time-predictable policies such as round-robin or FIFO. We call this value upper-bound delay (ubd). Deriving trustworthy ubd statically is possible when sufficient public information exists on the timing latency incurred on access to the resource of interest. Unfortunately however, that is rarely granted for commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) processors. Therefore, the users resort to measurement observations on the target processor and thus compute a "measured" ubd(m). However, using ubd(m) to compute worst-case execution time values for programs running on COTS multicore processors requires qualification on the soundness of the result. In this paper, we present a measurement-based methodology to derive a ubd(m) under round-robin (RoRo) and first-in-first-out (FIFO) arbitration, which accurately approximates ubd from above, without needing latency information from the hardware provider. Experimental results, obtained on multiple processor configurations, demonstrate the robustness of the proposed methodology.

A Collaborative Internet of Things Architecture for Smart Cities and Environmental Monitoring

The collaborative Internet of Things (C-IoT) is an emerging paradigm that involves many communities with the idea of cooperating in data gathering and service sharing. Many fields of application, such as smart cities and environmental monitoring, use the concept of crowdsensing in order to produce the amount of data that such Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios need in order to be pervasive. In this paper we introduce an architecture, namely SenSquare, able to handle both the heterogeneous data sources coming from open IoT platform and crowdsensing campaigns, and display a unified access to users. We inspect all the facets of such a complex system, spanning over issues of different nature: we deal with heterogeneous data classification, mobile crowdsensing management for environmental data, information representation, and unification, IoT service composition and deployment. We detail our proposed solution in dealing with such tasks and present possible methods for meeting open challenges. Finally, we demonstrate the capabilities of SenSquare through both a mobile and a desktop client.

Depth-of-Field Rendering Using Progressive Lens Sampling in Direct Volume Rendering

Direct volume rendering is a widely used technique for extracting information from three-dimensional scalar fields acquired by measurement or numerical simulation. However, the translucency of direct volume rendering to express the internal structure of the volume often makes it difficult to recognize the depth of complex structures. In this paper, we propose a new method for applying depth-of-field effects to volume ray-casting to improve the depth perception. A thin lens camera model is used to simulate rays passing through different parts of lens. The proposed method is implemented in the GPU pipeline with no preprocessing, so any acceleration techniques of volume ray-casting can be applied without restrictions. We also propose a multi-pass rendering framework using progressive lens sampling. This new technique uses a different number of lens samples per pixel, depending on the size of the circle of confusion at the point where each ray intersects the volume data. In the experiments with various data, we demonstrated that higher quality images with better depth perception were generated up to 9x faster than the existing depth-of-field method in direct volume rendering.

This paper presents an overview of the past, present and future of the OpenMP application programming interface (API). While the API originally specified a small set of directives that guided shared memory fork-join parallelization of loops and program sections, OpenMP now provides a richer set of directives that capture a wide range of parallelization strategies that are not strictly limited to shared memory. As we look toward the future of OpenMP, we immediately see further evolution of the support for that range of parallelization strategies and the addition of direct support for debugging and performance analysis tools. Looking beyond the next major release of the specification of the OpenMP API, we expect the specification eventually to include support for more parallelization strategies and to embrace closer integration into its Fortran, C and, in particular, C++ base languages, which will likely require the API to adopt additional programming abstractions.

Transmission of Frequency Balance Instructions and Secure Data Sharing Based on Chaos Encryption in Smart Grid-Based Energy Systems Applications

Data communication security between power systems, which has become a chronic problem in the classical network, is characterized by the application of information communication technology (ICT) in modern network models. Nowadays, the electricity network is spread over very large areas, and the load taking, and load shedding instructions are transmitted one-way and unsafe in the current structure. However, utilities in the smart grid are developing new methodologies to secure the communication infrastructure. This article presents a design that will make the current grid model more reliable and provide a secure data communication in accordance with the modern grid infrastructure. This design provides auxiliary communication codes such as chaotic codes embedded in the communication instructions between power systems, which are generation balance instructions sent to the power plants by the load dispatch center to achieve frequency balance. Used as a case study, one-day instructions are transmitted and encoded four times a day, which is the amount of capacity that only the receiver and transmitter can understand with two-sided encryption. The necessary reserve capacity, chaotic encryption and suitability for real-time applications were evaluated using experimentally obtained power system data for frequency control, which is very important in terms of sustainability in energy and economy against cyber-attacks, and very accurate results were obtained.

Toward Indigenous Presence: A Radical Relationality Approach for Designing Mixed-Reality Indigenous Data Experiences

We present Indigenous Presence, a design principle for partnering with Indigenous communities to make computing tools responsive to Indigenous priorities. Indigenous Presence blends participatory design methodologies with radical relationality, a concept from Critical Indigenous Theory, and theories of presence from virtual and mixed-reality (MR) research. Examples come from a six-year partnership with local Micronesian and Dakota communities that aims, in part, to use MR to revitalize and exchange cultural knowledges of canoes, waters, lands, and skies. Five factors for activating Indigenous Presence are identifed: 1) having a community-relevant topic, 2) including Indigenous makers, 3) creating culturally identifiable experiences, 4) centering radical relationality in design, and 5) respecting Indigenous protocols. Potential benefits include higher ethical standards for computing research along with increased trustworthiness and participation in computing.

Effect of d-Dimensional Re-orderings on Lossless Compression of Radio-Astronomy and Digital Elevation Data

For multidimensional data, Space-Filling Curves (SFCs) have been used to improve the execution time of spatial data queries. However, their effect on compression, when used to reorder the uncompressed values, is known to a lesser extent. We investigate the impact of three SFCs on Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) elevation data and Square-Kilometre Array telescope (SKA) radio-astronomy data: two types of datasets to which SFCs have not been extensively applied, within a compression context. This work contributes to the understanding of how such reorderings impact compression performance and affect different compression schemes and preprocessing techniques through their use. We show empirical results from combining eight common compression schemes, the Z-Order, Gray-Code, and Hilbert space-filling curves, and the bitwise preprocessing technique BitShuffle. The Hilbert Curve consistently outperforms the other orderings for the SRTM dataset though the mapping implementation incurs a significant speed penalty. However, the Z-Order and Gray-Code Curves are best for the SKA dataset. Through an analysis of the dataset autocorrelations, file-entropies, and block-entropies;we show that the SKA dataset's dimensional bias is not exploited as much by the Hilbert Curve compared to the Z-Order and Gray-Code Curves. However, the Hilbert Curve is the most appropriate for the SRTM dataset as it can be modelled as isotropic and has a significantly higher level of local autocorrelation. BitShuffle is necessary to practically compress the SKA data, but does contribute to the compression performance of the SRTM dataset. These curves and BitShuffle are advantageous in reducing block-entropy values for such datasets.

Twelve Years in the Evolution of the Internet Ecosystem

Our goal is to understand the evolution of the autonomous system (AS) ecosystem over the last 12 years. Instead of focusing on abstract topological properties, we classify ASs into a number of types depending on their function and business type. Furthermore, we consider the semantics of inter-AS links: customer-provider versus peering relations. We find that the available historic datasets from RouteViews and RIPE are not sufficient to infer the evolution of peering links, and so we restrict our focus to customer-provider links. Our findings highlight some important trends in the evolution of the Internet over the last 12 years and hint at what the Internet is heading toward. After an exponential increase phase until 2001, the Internet has settled into a slower exponential growth in terms of both ASs and inter-AS links. The growth is mostly due to enterprise networks and content/access providers at the periphery of the Internet. The average path length remains almost constant, mostly due to the increasing multihoming degree of transit and content/access providers. The AS types differ significantly from each other with respect to their rewiring activity;content/access providers are the most active. A few large transit providers act as "attractors" or "repellers" of customers. For many providers, strong attractiveness precedes strong repulsiveness by 3-9 months. Finally, in terms of regional growth, we find that the AS ecosystem is now larger and more dynamic in Europe than in North America.

Electric-Field Inputs for Molecular Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata Circuits

Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is a low-power, non-von-Neumann, general-purpose paradigm for classical computing using transistor-free logic. An elementary QCA device called a "cell" is made from a system of coupled quantum dots with a few mobile charges. The cell's charge configuration encodes a bit, and quantum charge tunneling within a cell enables device switching. Arrays of cells networked locally via the electrostatic field form QCA circuits, which mix logic, memory and device interconnections. A molecular QCA implementation promises ultra-high device densities, high switching speeds, and room-temperature operation. We propose a novel approach to the technical challenge of transducing bits from larger conventional devices to nanoscale QCA molecules. This signal transduction begins with lithographically formed electrodes placed on the device plane. A voltage applied across these electrodes establishes an in-plane electric field, which selects a bit packet on a large QCA input circuit. A typical QCA binary wire may be used to transmit a smaller bit packet of size more suitable for processing from this input to other QCA circuitry. In contrast to previous concepts for bit inputs to molecular QCA, this approach requires neither special QCA cells with fixed states nor nanoelectrodes that establish fields with single-electron specificity. A brief overview of the QCA paradigm is given. Proof-of-principle simulation results are shown, demonstrating the input concept in circuits made from two-dot QCA cells. Importantly, this concept for bit inputs to molecular QCA may enable solutions to or provide insights into other challenges to the realization of molecular QCA, such as the demonstration of molecular device switching, the read-out of molecular QCA states, and the layout of molecular QCA circuits.
