The invention of computer and development of computing technology are great historical events in the twentieth century, which impact on society and the daily life of the human beings drastically. The development of computing science and technology has been one of the primary forces driving people to enter the so-called information age. This paper attempts to present some viewpoints on the past and future of computing science, system-on-chip, software and man-machine interaction, with emphasis on computing science.

Enrollment in computing science university programs is at a dangerously low level. A major reason for this is the general lack of interest in computing science by females. In this paper, we discuss our experience with using a computer game construction environment as a vehicle to encourage female participation in computing science. Experiments with game construction in grade 10 English classes showed that females enjoyed this activity as much as males and were just as successful. In this paper, we argue that: a) computer game construction is a viable activity for teaching higher-order thinking skills that are essential for science;b) computer game construction that involves scripting teaches valuable computing science abstraction skills: c) this activity is an enjoyable introduction to computing science;and d) outcome measures for this activity are not male-dominated in any of the three aspects (higher-order thinking, computing science abstraction skills, activity enjoyment). Therefore, we claim that this approach is a viable gender-neutral approach to teaching computing science in particular and science in general that may increase female participation in the discipline. This paper explores the origins and content of neurocybernetics and its links to artificial intelligence, computer science and knowledge engineering. Starting with three remarkable pieces of work, we center attention on a number of events that initiated and developed basic topics that are still nowadays a matter of research and inquire, from goal directed activity theories to circular causality and to reverberations and learning. Within this context, we pay tribute to the memory of Prof. Ricciardi documenting the importance of his contributions in the mathematics of brain, neural nets and neurophysiological models, computational simulations and techniques. Among school children, the interest in dealing with computing science varies between different age groups and countries, but it can be observed that it tends to decline among young women, and it is mostly men who gain a foothold in this domain. Various programs and activities are meant to increase the interest of all our children, but measurement instruments to collect baseline data and interpret effects of (classroom) interventions are rare. In this work, we present a framework that allows us for collecting measures (personality traits, interests, and self-concept) from different age groups, and we use it to take a closer look at girls and boys at lower secondary school level. We report on measurable similarities as well as differences and, in the context of our own teaching interventions, we come up with first recommendations and suggestions in order to encourage secondary school teachers and curriculum developers to also address the needs and interests of girls and boys.

The Cambridge University Mathematical Laboratory was set up in 1937 This article describes the motivation behind the creation of the laboratory and its original terms of reference. The changes to the laboratory caused by World War II are then discussed. The Cambridge Mathematical Laboratory was reestablished in 1945 under the directorship of Maurice V. Wilkes. The remainder of the article considers how Wilkes developed the work of the laboratory and built up a research team to work on the EDSAC project, which established Cambridge as a major center of computer research.

We stand at the threshold of a dramatic and exciting new time in humanity's development. As irreplaceable physical resources inevitably dwindle, we shall increasingly come to rely much more on cognitive resources that consume less and less energy. (Here, I define cognitive resources as those resources that support and facilitate human cognition, ideally in intelligent ways). In this keynote address, I report on a programme of research conducted at my research centre and by my colleagues in their own universities. The multitude of curricula and competency models poses great challenges for primary and secondary teachers due to the wealth of descriptions. Defining optimal (or personalized) learning paths is thus impeded. This paper now takes a closer look at 7 curricula from 6 different countries and presents an approach for the identification of learning outcomes and dependencies (requires and expands) between them in order to support the identification of learning paths. The approach includes different strategies from natural language processing, but it also makes use of a refined and simplified version of Bloom's Taxonomy to identify dependencies between the learning outcomes. It is shown that the identification of similar learning outcomes works very well compared to expert opinions. The identification of dependencies, however, only works well for detecting learning outcomes that refine other learning outcomes (expands dependency). The detection of learning outcomes which build on each other (requires dependency) is, on the other hand, still heavily dependent on the definition of dictionaries and a computing science topics ontology.

With strong links to management, economics, business, engineering and other subjects, management science (MS) employs various scientific research-based principles, strategies, and analytical methods such as mathematical modeling and data analysis to make decisions and solve complex problems. In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the scientific MS community, especially in the fields of data analysis and mining, decision support system, and computing science. This paper gives a brief introduction to the 13th ICMSEM proceedings Volume I, examines the reasons why data analysis and mining, decision support system, and computing science have become key foci in the past few years, and outlines the central research areas in the 13th ICMSEM proceedings Volume I in a brief literature review. Finally, CiteSpace is used to investigate the keywords to identify the frontier MS innovations. The ICMSEM continues to provide a valuable forum for academic exchange and communication to promote future management science and engineering management innovations.
