The use of open-loop coding can be easily extended to a closed-loop concatenated code if the transmitter has access to feedback. This can be done by introducing a feedback transmission scheme as an inner code. In this paper, this process is investigated for the case when a linear feedback scheme is implemented as an inner code and, in particular, over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with noisy feedback. To begin, we look to derive an optimal linear feedback scheme by optimizing over the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). From this optimization, a linear feedback scheme is produced that is asymptotically optimal in the sense of blocklength-normalized SNR;it is then compared to other well-known schemes. Then, the linear feedback scheme is implemented as an inner code to a concatenated code over the AWGN channel with noisy feedback. This code shows improvements not only in error exponent bounds, but also in bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER). It is also shown that if the concatenated code has total blocklength L and the inner code has blocklength, N, the inner code blocklength should scale as N = O (C/R), where C is the capacity of the channel and R is the rate of the concatenated code. Simulations with low-density parity-check (LDPC) and turbo codes are provided to display practical applications and their error rate benefits.

concatenated coding techniques are applied to slow frequency-hop packet radio communications for channels with partial-band interference. Binary orthogonal signaling (e.g., binary FSK) is employed with noncoherent demodulation. The outer codes are Reed-Solomon codes and the inner codes are convolutional codes. Two concatenated coding schemes are compared. The first employs an interleaver between the outer Reed-Solomon code and the inner convolutional code. The second scheme employs an additional interleaver following the convolutional code. Comparisons are made between the performance of these concatenated coding schemes and the performance of Reed-Solomon codes alone.

Linear coding schemes have been the main choice of coding for the additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel (AWGN-BC) with noiseless feedback in the literature. The achievable rate regions of these schemes go well beyond the capacity region of the AWGN-BC without feedback. In this paper, a concatenated coding design for the K-user AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is proposed that relies on linear schemes as inner codes to achieve rate tuples outside the no-feedback capacity region. The boundary of an achievable rate region of purely linear coding schemes for noiseless feedback is shown to be arbitrarily closely approached by the concatenated coding scheme for sufficiently small feedback noise levels. Then, a linear coding scheme for the K-user symmetric AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is presented and optimized for use in the concatenated coding scheme. For noiseless feedback, the presented linear coding scheme achieves the optimal sum-rate of linear-feedback coding. An upper bound on the inner code blocklength needed to achieve a sum-rate above no-feedback sum-capacity is derived.

In this study, the authors propose an equivocation scheme for wiretap channels, which is composed of bit-extension mapping, coset coding and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). The inner bit-extension code and outer coset code are used for equivocation of a wiretapper channel, whereas the HARQ scheme is to mitigate noisy errors in a main legitimate channel. These concatenated codes and HARQ are effective and practical for various channel conditions. The average equivocation and the probability of causing imperfect secrecy are analysed for finite codeword lengths. As a function of channel conditions, they investigate the block error rate at the legitimate receiver and the information leakage to the wiretapper. From simulation results, they further determine the minimum requirements of code design for some target values of the residual' block error rate and information leakage at maximum retransmission.

In this work, me investigate the use of forward-error correction (FEC) as well as concatenated coding for reliable data transmission in asynchronous direct-sequence code division multiple-access communications over frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels. The FEC scheme combines antenna diversity with low complexity concatenated codes which consist of a Reed-Solomon outer code and a convolutional inner code. Under this concatenated coding scheme, we analyze the average bit-error rate performance and capacity tradeoffs between various system parameters under a fixed total bandwidth expansion and concatenated codes constraint requirements.

Multipulse signaling applied to optical communication channels has become known as a bandwidth efficient signaling format [1]. However, to achieve reliable communication in noisy channels we must resort to some sort of coding. In this article, concatenated coding, recommended by the Consultive Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS), is investigated [2] and compared to the standard Reed-Solomon coding of pulse position modulation signaling.

A new concatenated coding technique has been developed for high-order PRML channels, Its first key feature is a pre-error-correction-coding (pre-ECC) scheme comprising cyclic-redundancy-check ECC (CRCC) coding and simplified soft-output decoding, The CRCC coding, a very-low-redundancy inner-block ECC concatenated to the PRML channel, specifically corrects dominant short error-events in the ML-detector The soft-output decoding enhances the CRCC coding capability through the list and soft-symbol output Viterbi-algorithm (list-SOVA), A second key feature is an iterative decoding scheme to ensure efficient cooperation between an outer Reed-Solomon (RS) ECC and the ML-detector, By using error-free decoded bit-information feedback from the outer RS-ECC decoder, the iterative scheme employs "state pinning" in the ML trellis-detector, This enables long error-events remaining after the CRCC decoding to be corrected efficiently without increasing the coding redundancy and the decoding complexity, Complementary use of the iterative scheme for long error-events and the CRCC decoding for dominant short error-events improves the total system error-rate performance, Simulation showed that the concatenated coding scheme could significantly improve the RS-ECC error-rate performance of a 16/17-rate quasi-MTR-coded (MEPRML)-P-2 channel when used in conjunction with CRCC coding.

Performance of differential pulse-position modulation (DPPM) with concatenated coding over optical wireless communications

The concatenation of marker and Reed-Solomon codes in order to correct insertion/deletion errors in differential pulse-position modulation (DPPM) over optical wireless communications is presented. The concatenated code decoding algorithms with hard-decision and soft-decision detection are presented. The performance of the hard-decision coded DPPM system is evaluated over both nondispersive and dispersive channels via analysis and simulation. It is shown that the coding gain provided by the concatenated code is approximately 4 dB when the code rate is about 0.7 and the channel is nondispersive. Over a dispersive channel, the coded system performs better than the uncoded system when the ratio of delay spread to bit duration is not high. A soft-decision detector is employed to combat intersymbol interference. The soft-decision decoding algorithm, which has low complexity and can be practically implemented, is described. The performance over nondispersive and dispersive channels is evaluated by analysis and simulation. It is shown that the soft-decision system requires approximately 2 dB less transmit power than the hard-decision system for additive white Gaussian noise and low-dispersive channels. Soft decoding also provides a performance improvement in high-dispersive channels.

Optimal interleaver design for concatenated coding in DSL systems

The Reed-Solomon code and multidimensional TCM (MTCM) can be concatenated to improve the performance of discrete multitone (DMT) modulated digital subscriber line (DSL) systems. The criteria for designing an effective multidimensional TCM (MTCM) scheme with efficient interleaver are described The results of simulations for evaluating the performance of the proposed coding scheme are presented.

The performance of a concatenated coding scheme is studied over nonlinear channels when additive white Gaussian noise is considered in both the up and downlink. Bandwidth-efficient trellis codes using a 32-QAM signal set are used as inner codes and 3/4 rate convolutional codes as outer codes to achieve an overall bandwidth efficiency of 3 bit/s/Hz. Simulation results show that this coding system compared with an uncoded 8-PSK scheme, 3/4 convolutionally encoded 16-QAM systems and some TCM techniques, provides significant coding gains over linear and non-linear channels.
