This article seeks to advance coded compressed sensing (CCS) as a practical scheme for unsourced random access. The CCS algorithm features a concatenated structure where an inner code is tasked with support recovery and an outer code conducts message disambiguation. Recently, the CCS scheme was improved through the use of approximate message passing (AMP) with a dynamic denoiser that shares soft information between the inner and outer decoders. This significantly improves performance at the cost of additional complexity. This work shows how the spatial coupling generated by the outer code is sufficiently strong to justify relaxing certain constraints on the inner code. It is shown that a block diagonal sensing matrix with the aforementioned dynamic denoiser forms an effective means to get good performance at reduced complexity. This novel architecture can be used to scale CCS to dimensions that were previously impractical. Findings are supported by numerical simulations.

Recently, a novel scheme for iterative multiuser detection and turbo decoding was proposed by Damnjanovic and Vojcic. In this scheme, multiuser detection and single-user turbo decoding are tightly coupled to maximize the overall gain. The extrinsic probabilities for the coded bits of the interfering users, obtained after each turbo decoding iteration, are used as a priori probabilities in the following multiuser iteration and the extrinsic information for the systematic bits of the desired user is used as a priori information in the next single-user turbo decoding iteration. Turbo decoding of parallel concatenated convolutional codes is carried out in parallel fashion. It has been shown that the proposed detector approaches the multiuser capacity limit within I dB in the low signal-to-noise ratio region. However, the main drawback of the scheme is its exponential complexity in the number of users, which is due to the complexity of the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) multiuser detector. In this paper, we show that the complexity of the scheme can be significantly reduced by replacing the MAP multiuser detector with an iterative detector derived from the greedy multiuser detector proposed by AIRustamani and Vojcic. In this paper, we demonstrate that, for both the additive white Gaussian noise and the frequency-nonselective Rayleigh fading, the substantial reduction in complexity of the iterative scheme proposed by Damnjanovic and Vojcic when the greedy detector Is utilized introduces a slight degradation in performance;the loss in performance is less than or equal to 0.5 dB compared to MAP detector for systems with number of users double the spreading gain.

This paper focuses on the uplink of multicell IEEE 802.16-d WiMax systems with OFDM modulation and antenna array at the base stations. We propose an analytical framework to assess the average error probability of all the different transmission modes over space-time dispersive Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed method takes into account the effects of the multilevel modulation, the error correction capability of the concatenated code, the interleaving scheme, the power-angle structure of the inter-cell interference and the array processing at the base station. Simulation results corroborate the proposed analysis for a IEEE 802.16-d cellular system over different propagation scenarios.

In this paper, forward error correction schemes are discussed for application in the multigigabit-per-second optical channel. The proposed schemes, based on specific convolutional codes which allow simple decoding techniques, represent a valid alternative, in terms of performance and complexity, to the recommended Reed-Solomon codes.

Turbo codes, with potential 4 to 5 dB coding gain over the conventional Viterbi detection schemes, are good candidates for the next generation detection/decoding schemes for magnetic recording systems. In this paper, timing recovery is included in the evaluation of Turbo codes. Three timing recovery methods, namely voltage control oscillator (VCO) method, interpolated timing recovery (ITR) method and adaptive filter timing recovery (AFTR) method are examined for two turbo decoder architectures, full turbo and serial turbo. Bit error rate (BER) results from simulations suggest that full turbo decoder is more robust than the serial turbo decoder. For serial turbo decoder, error floor is seen earlier in VCO and ITR methods than AFTR method. Using s-random interleaver seems to be able to remove such error floor.

The partial response channel can be viewed as a rate-1 encoder in which the output alphabet differs from the input alphabet. in serially concatenated coding schemes, the partial response channel can serve as the inner encoder, Recent works on the application of turbo decoding techniques to partial response channels have used channel models to investigate system performance. While the models provided some insight into the performance of turbo decoding techniques, performance in a real system, with electronic and signal-dependent media noise, remained unknown. This paper will demonstrate the performance of turbo decoding techniques using real and modeled spinstand data. A simple serial concatenation system will be presented that uses as its outer code a single convolutional code and as its inner code the partial response channel. Significant gains will be shown over QMTR coded systems.

Higher-order modulation schemes like 8PSK combined with powerful channel coding techniques like trellis coding and conjugateness Reed-Solomon coding, have been demonstrated in the INTELSAT study INTEL-1268 to achieve a higher bandwidth efficiency compared to QPSK with conventional coding. Almost error-free transmission (BER<10/sup -10/) is demonstrated with an engineering model, for E/sub b//N/sub o/>5 dB with QPSK modulation, rate-3/4 convolutional code conjugateness with RS code according to IESS-308 (IDR), and for E/sub b//N/sub o/>6 dB with 8PSK modulation, rate-2/3 trellis code conjugateness with a (255,235,10) RS code. The following efficiencies are obtained: QPSK: (rate 3/4 Viterbi plus RS coding). Efficiency=1.15 bit/s/Hz and 8-PSK: (rate 2/3 trellis plus RS coding). Efficiency=1.54 bit/s/Hz. The overall transmission delay for a typical 2 Mbps carrier is: QPSK: (rate 3/4 Viterbi plus RS coding). Delay=3 ms (@ 2.048 Mbps) and 8PSK: (rate 2/3 trellis plus RS coding). Delay=10 ms (@ 2.048 Mbps). The feasibility of fully software switchable and programmable QPSK/8PSK modem/codec equipment has been demonstrated. Price estimates for this switchable QPSK/8PSK modem/codec equipment show excellent price/performance ratios for this new type of equipment.< >

In this paper, we first provide an overview of Hierarchical Modulation (HM) along with the opportunities offered by this modulation in the context of the recent Digital Video Broadcasting standard for Satellite to Handheld devices (DVB-SH).With HM, the binary data is partitioned into a “high-priority” (HP) and a “low-priority” (LP) bit stream that are separately and independently encoded before being mapped on non-uniformly spaced constellation points. We will show that the robustness of the HP stream is obtained at the expense of performance degradation of the less protected LP stream with respect to a non-hierarchical modulation. To overcome this inherent drawback of HM, we propose two different reception schemes for improving the bit error rate performance of the less protected LP stream, while keeping the HP decoding performance unchanged. The important point is that in one of the proposed reception schemes, the performance improvement is achieved together with the reduction of the receiver’s complexity.

In response to the concerns of several major customers about the quality and availability of INTELSAT IDR (intermediate data rate) services and IBS (INTELSAT Business Services), COMSAT Laboratories designed and developed an outer codec and demonstrated its capabilities. The improved system was proposed to the INTELSAT Board of Governors in early 1992 and was approved in December 1992. The paper describes the innovations in filtering, synchronization, and interleaving which were included in the design of the improved system. It also presents the results of software and hardware simulations and field trials.< >

The paper has reviewed a number of quality issues and has emphasised the need to devise objective measures of performance which apply to digital video compression processes, since those adapted from analogue are often inappropriate. With DTH broadcast systems, means exist to avoid the major pitfalls of quality variations; several channels of programming in multiplex gives broadcasters flexibility to trade choice for quality. If picture redundancy is over-exploited, there will be an erosion of quality during programme production. It is important for the future that precipitate steps are not taken until the accumulation processes are better understood; high bit rate and modest levels of compression should be employed in studios.< >
