BCH Code Selection and Iterative Decoding for BCH and LDPC concatenated coding System

In this letter, we consider a concatenated BCH and QC-LDPC coding system for potential use of data protection on flash memory. Two issues are studied, and strategies to resolve them are proposed. First, in order to guarantee that the concatenated coding system is free from undesired error floor, we propose a strategy to select the outer BCH codes according to the error patterns of inner QC-LDPC code. We next present an iterative decoding algorithm between inner QC-LDPC and outer BCH codes to alleviate the performance degradation in the waterfall region due to code-concatenation rate loss. The two proposals jointly provide a feasible design for the concatenated BCH and QC-LDPC coding system. Simulations to verify the performance of the proposed concatenated coding system design are given at the end.

ALTERNATIVE TO NASA concatenated coding SYSTEM FOR THE GALILEO MISSION

Because of delays in the Galileo mission an enhanced coding gain was required, compared to the gain achieved by the concatenated system recommended by CCSDS. NASA has met the requirement by exchanging the inner convolutional memory 6, rate 1/2 code with a memory 14, rate 1/4 code, whereby an enhanced coding gain of 1.6 dB can be obtained if infinite interleaving is assumed. To obtain this enhanced coding gain, the complexity for the inner decoder is increased by at least 256 times. The author proposes an alternative system with a slightly larger enhanced coding gain obtained at interleaving degree 16, i.e. by a system which can be implemented in practice. The overall complexity is, however, at least 25 times smaller than the complexity for the system implemented by NASA.

concatenated coding techniques are applied to slow frequency-hop packet radio communications for channels with partial-band interference. Binary orthogonal signaling (e.g., binary FSK) is employed with noncoherent demodulation. The outer codes are Reed-Solomon codes and the inner codes are convolutional codes. Two concatenated coding schemes are compared. The first employs an interleaver between the outer Reed-Solomon code and the inner convolutional code. The second scheme employs an additional interleaver following the convolutional code. Comparisons are made between the performance of these concatenated coding schemes and the performance of Reed-Solomon codes alone.

Iterative decoding based on forced-state method is applied for improving the decoding performance for concatenated coding system. In the application targeted here, this iterative decoding method is proposed for channel decoding of Japan Terrestrial Digital TV (ISDB-T). Modified structure of Viterbi algorithm that operates on quantized data with regard to implementation of the iterative decoding is presented. In general, knowledge about the implementation of conventional Viterbi algorithm can be applied to the modified Viterbi algorithm. The computational kernel of the proposed structure is the path metric calculation and the trace back for Viterbi algorithm with forced-state method based on quantized data.

Link-16 is a tactical data link widely used in the United States Armed Forces and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The communication terminal of Link-16 is called the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) and features Reed-Solomon (RS) coding, symbol interleaving, cyclic code-shift keying for M-ary symbol modulation, minimum-shift keying for chip modulation and combined frequency-hopping and direct sequence spread spectrum. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a Link-16/JTIDS-type waveform in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and pulsed-noise interference (PNI) when an alternative error correction coding scheme for the physical layer waveform is employed. The waveform considered uses a concatenated code consisting of a rate r = 4/5 convolutional code as an outer code and a (31, k) RS code as an inner code. Currently, the JTIDS waveform is received noncoherently at the chip level. In this paper the performance of the alternative, JTIDS-compatible waveform is evaluated for both coherent and noncoherent demodulation. The performance of the alternative waveform for the case where AWGN is the only noise present as well as when PNI is also present is investigated. The performance obtained using the alternative error correction coding scheme is compared to that of the existing JTIDS waveform when the same assumptions are made for both waveforms.

This paper propose a concatenated coding scheme based on polar codes and LDPC codes on AWGN channel. A polar code is served as an outer code and a LDPC code is employed as an inner code. First it proposes the system framework, and introduces the principle of polar codes and LDPC codes respectively, then demonstrates the decoding scheme of the concatenated codes. Finally, it gives the simulation results and some conclusions.

Multipulse signaling applied to optical communication channels has become known as a bandwidth efficient signaling format [1]. However, to achieve reliable communication in noisy channels we must resort to some sort of coding. In this article, concatenated coding, recommended by the Consultive Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS), is investigated [2] and compared to the standard Reed-Solomon coding of pulse position modulation signaling.

Radio broadcasting technology in this era of compact disc is expected to deliver high quality audio programmes in mobile environment. The Eureka-147 Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system with coded OFDM technology accomplish this demand by making receivers highly robust against effects of multipath fading environment. In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of DAB system conforming to the parameters established by the ETSI (EN 300 401) using time and frequency interleaving, concatenated Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem coding and convolutional coding method in different transmission channels. The results show that concatenated channel coding improves the system performance compared to convolutional coding.

In single-level cell flash memory, the most popular error correction code used for protection of the stored data is Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes. However, BCH codes are not adequate to meet the error requirements of multi-level cell flash memory. Serial concatenation of codes increases the error correcting capability of the resulting system. Hence, a favorable concatenated coding scheme for next-generation flash memory is proposed which is the combination of BCH and QC-LDPC codes. Encryption schemes can be integrated with error-correction in order to achieve more security and reliability of the communication system. Here, Advanced Encryption Standard(AES-128) is used to encrypt the information first, and then the encrypted data is encoded by the concatenated coding scheme. This ensures the security and reliability of data to be stored or transmitted.

In order to improve the signal transmission performance of the TSV array transmission, TSV arrays are seen as transmission channels. And a communication channel model with high noise and high crosstalk is established for TSV array transmission. In this paper, a channel concatenated coding transmission scheme is proposed to apply the concatenated code to the TSV array transmission model. Its purpose is to optimize the transmission performance and realize the efficient transmission of the signal in the TSV array. In this case, channel noise is seen as White Gaussian Noise, and crosstalk is determined by the S parameters. Taking into account the coding efficiency and transmission efficiency, the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code is used as the inner code and the Hamming code is used as the outer code. The simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) performance improved at any information transmission rate, and the BER is lower than using LDPC code alone. Therefore, the channel concatenated coding transmission scheme can be used to achieve better TSV array signal transmission, overcome the transmission problem and improve transmission performance.
