New concatenated coding and space-time modulation scheme for MIMO wireless communications

Zheng and Tse have demonstrated that there exists an optimal trade-off between diversity gain and multiplexing gain. To realise the predicted optimal trade-off, we propose a new multiple-input multiple-output transmission scheme for a concatenated coding and space-time (ST) modulation system aimed at applications that require flexible trade-off between performance and data rate. The proposed scheme is multi-layered with linear ST modulation to allow various multiplexing gain. Through a judicious design of the inner ST modulation, the optimisation of spatial multiplexing is made simple. Moreover, a joint iterative receiver based on MMSE criterion with a priori information is developed to reduce computational complexity. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the merits of the new design.

In this paper, we first provide an overview of Hierarchical Modulation (HM) along with the opportunities offered by this modulation in the context of the recent Digital Video Broadcasting standard for Satellite to Handheld devices (DVB-SH).With HM, the binary data is partitioned into a “high-priority” (HP) and a “low-priority” (LP) bit stream that are separately and independently encoded before being mapped on non-uniformly spaced constellation points. We will show that the robustness of the HP stream is obtained at the expense of performance degradation of the less protected LP stream with respect to a non-hierarchical modulation. To overcome this inherent drawback of HM, we propose two different reception schemes for improving the bit error rate performance of the less protected LP stream, while keeping the HP decoding performance unchanged. The important point is that in one of the proposed reception schemes, the performance improvement is achieved together with the reduction of the receiver’s complexity.

The use of trellis-coded modulation (TCM) in combination with an outer block code is considered for next-generation 100-Gb/s optical transmission systems. Two block codes are employed as an outer code: a 16 times interleaved byte-oriented (255,239) Reed Solomon (RS) code and a code consisting of two interleaved extended three-error correcting Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) (1020,988) codes. Simulations show that soft-decision decoding of a selected TCM inner code in combination with hard-decision decoding of the outer RS code achieves a net coding gain (NCG) of 8.42 dB at a bit-error rate of 10(-13). When the concatenated code based on the two interleaved BCH codes is used as the outer code, the NCG is 9.7 dB. The impact of quantization on the performance of the concatenated TCM scheme with the two interleaved BCH outer codes is evaluated, and it is shown that 4-bit quantization is sufficient to approach the "infinite precision" performance to within 0.15 dB.

Channel Modeling and Signal Processing for Probe Storage Channels

Probe-storage devices employ large arrays of probes to write/read data in parallel in some storage medium, and combine ultra-high density, low access times, and low power consumption. A particular probe-storage technique utilizes thermomechanical means to store and retrieve information in thin polymer films. In this paper, a system-level channel model for the thermomechanical probe-storage channel is presented. Each of the components of the proposed model is derived by extensive characterization of experimentally obtained readback signals from probe recording tests. Moreover, detection techniques that are actually utilized in a probe-storage prototype implementation are described, followed by coding techniques for added reliability in the presence of particles or other impurities of the storage medium. In addition to low-complexity coding constructs, a concatenated coding scheme with an outer LDPC and inner modulation code is considered, in order to establish a benchmark for overall system performance. A novel methodology for joint decoding of outer LDPC and inner (d,k) modulation codes is developed. Furthermore, an optimal soft decoder for the modulation code is proposed, based on a modification of the decoder metrics to accurately account for the probe storage channel output statistics. Experimental results are used throughout the paper to validate the channel model and identify its relevant parameters, as well as to verify the system performance obtained by simulations.

Improving the Performance of Chaos-Based Modulations Via Serial Concatenation

This paper proposes a serially concatenated system with an outer convolutional channel encoder and an inner chaos-based coded modulator. With the help of the principles of symbolic dynamics, the chaotic modulation can be described in terms of a trellis. Owing to this, we show that the resulting system can be designed and analyzed following developments made for serially concatenated channel codes (SCCCs) or bit-interleaved coded-modulation systems. We show how the iterative decoding algorithm used in this concatenated framework can be analyzed through the well-known extrinsic information transfer chart device and how the bit error rate can be bounded using the transfer function of the convolutional channel encoder. Comparison with a related SCCC system in both additive white Gaussian noise and frequency-nonselective fading channels shows that this kind of chaos-based systems keeps the potential advantages of coded-modulation-based systems. We are thus confident that the principles shown here can lead to the design of competitive chaotic discrete communication systems.

In this paper we study the use of a high rate Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes in concatenated coding structures. Specifically, we use the LDPC code as an outer code, with a convolutional code as an inner code. We decode the convolutional code using a symbol based Log-MAP (Maximum a posteriori probability) decoder, and feed the soft outputs of this decoder into a non-binary Galois Field LDPC decoder. We compare this concatenation scheme using 16 QAM modulation with one using a bit based Log-MAP decoder over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Stanford University Interim (SUI-3) channel model. The new proposed decoding technique has shown improvements for both channel models.

Effects of Multipath on OFDM Systems for Indoor Broadband Power-Line Communication Networks

Power-line networks are an excellent infrastructure for broadband data transmission. However, various multipaths within a broadband power-line communication (BPLC) system exist due to stochastic changes in the network load impedances, branches, etc. This further affects network performance. This paper attempts to investigate the performance of indoor channels of a BPLC system that uses orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques. It is observed that when a branch is added in the link between the sending and receiving end of an indoor channel, an average of 4-dB power loss is found. Additionally, when the terminal impedances of the branch change from the line characteristic impedance to impedance of lower values, the power loss (signal-to-noise ratio) is about 0.67 dB/Omega. On the contrary, for every increase in the terminal impedances by 100 Omega, above the line characteristic impedance, the power loss is 0.1. dB/Omega. When the line terminal impedances are close to short or open circuits, OFDM techniques show degraded performance. This situation is also observed when the number of branches increases. In this paper, it is shown that to overcome such performance degradation, the concatenated Reed-Solomon codes/interleaved Viterbi methods can be used. The observations presented in the paper could be useful for an efficient design of a BPLC system that uses OFDM techniques.

In this paper, we explain how to build a turbo-like structure with binary inputs and chaotic outputs for efficient coding and decoding in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We analyze the convergence of the decoding algorithm, the performance in the error floor region and explain minimum distance properties of the resulting codes.

A Broadband Power-Line Communication System Design Scheme for Typical Tanzanian Low-Voltage Network

Information and communications technologies (ICTs) are gaining importance in developing countries. Power-line network is a potential infrastructure for ICT services provision. Power-lines are highly interconnected network with stochastic variation in number of branches. Under such distributed network conditions the design of a broadband power-line communication (BPLC) system is a challenge. In this paper a case study of an actual power-line network, representative of a low-voltage BPLC channel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is considered. We shall investigate the performance of such a low-voltage channel that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique with binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation scheme for communication. For sensitivity analysis, three different transmitter locations were chosen and receiver points were varied to identify the possible degraded performance scenarios. Analysis show that in the frequency bands of 100 MHz, the channel delay spread for such networks is about 4 mu s, giving a maximum number of subchannels 4096 with 512 cyclic prefix. To improve the degraded performance scenarios, the concatenated Reed Solomon outer code with punctured convolution inner code was applied to the network. It was found that when the branches were terminated by its corresponding characteristic impedances the performance is improved by 1.0-20 dB compared to a corresponding uncoded system. On the contrary for a coded system when the branches were terminated either in low or higher impedances compared to branch characteristic impedances the improvement was greater than 2-15 dB. This study demonstrates that the specification proposed by IEEE-802.16 Broadband wireless access working groups can be used for performance improvement of distributed low-voltage systems.
