conceptual data modeling is widely viewed in academia as a critical part of relational database development, essential for reducing project failure risks. Although empirical studies have explored various aspects of its use, research about how frequently conceptual data modeling is applied in practice and the reasons for its adoption or avoidance are lacking. This paper addresses this gap by presenting a study that evaluates the adoption of conceptual data modeling in the industry. The study begins with practitioner discussions to understand real-world project experiences, revealing a potential discrepancy between what is taught in academic settings and what is practiced in industry. Next, a survey of 485 database professionals is conducted and supplemented by follow-up interviews with 34 professionals. Findings indicate that fewer than 40% of practitioners consistently use formal conceptual data modeling, even in cases when they would like to do so. The survey identifies reasons for not using conceptual data modeling, and the follow-up interviews provide the practitioners with clarifications of the identified barriers. This research finds a positive association between conceptual modeling use and overall satisfaction with the outcome of the database development process. Lastly, the findings of this research offer important implications for both database practitioners and educators.

A conceptual data modeling framework with four levels of abstraction for environmental information

Environmental data generated by observation infrastructures and models is widely heterogeneous in both structure and semantics. The design and implementation of an ad hoc data model for each new dataset is costly and creates barriers for data integration. On the other hand, designing a single data model that supports any kind of environmental data has shown to be a complex task, and the resulting tools do not provide the required efficiency. In this paper, a new data modeling framework is proposed that enables the reuse of generic structures among different application domains and specific applications. The framework considers four levels of abstraction for the data models. Levels 1 and 2 provide general data model structures for environmental data, based on those defined by the Observations and Measurements (O&M) standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Level 3 incorporates generic data models for different application areas, whereas specific application models are designed at Level 4, reusing structures of the previous levels. Various use cases were implemented to illustrate the capabilities of the framework. A performance evaluation using six datasets of three different use cases has shown that the query response times achieved over the structures of Level 4 are very good compared to both ad hoc models and to a direct implementation of O&M in a Sensor Observation Service (SOS) tool. A qualitative evaluation shows that the framework fulfills a collection of general requirements not supported by any other existing solution.

Recently, context-aware applications, which provide customized services using personalized contextual information, have gained much attention. However, core IT technologies for realizing context-aware services are not sufficient to support the actual development of context-aware applications. Especially, it is very hard to find studies on context-aware data modeling that can provide different responses even for the same information according to users' situation. In practice, most context-aware services are managing contextual information in the phase of application development in a rather ad-hoc way. Unfortunately, this approach has an obvious limitation of expansibility when the amount of rapidly increasing contextual information is considered. In this paper, we first define the concept of contextual dependency among data objects. Second, we provide a context-aware data modeling methodology for modeling contextual information into the Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD, for short) based on contextual dependency. Finally, we design a simple scenario for context-aware services, construct an ERD from the scenario based on the discovered design rules, and implement a prototype of the service. The objective of conceptual data modelling is to produce an abstract model of the data required by a corporation to meet its information needs. Hence the conceptual data model (CDM) is critical to the success of a corporation's information system. Use of the abstract model is highly dependent on the criteria established within the CDM methodology. Review of current CDM methodologies has, however, shown the lack of a standard set of CDM criteria. The paper presents a framework for the development of CDM criteria. The development of these criteria provides a basis for the comparison of current CDM methodologies as well as a framework for the development of new CDM methodologies. While this set is not all inclusive, it can provide a basis for further development and discussion.

The use of a knowledge-based system in conceptual data modeling

Based on a study of the data modeling process of novice designers, and the errors they commit, a knowledge-based system (KBS) was designed and developed. It was found that the performance of novice designers was significantly better when they utilized the KBS instead of a system with no knowledge base. Two versions of the KBS-one with a guidance interface that advised the designer on appropriate design choices and another with a restrictive interface that restricted the design choices available to the designer-were developed. The restrictive interface was rated as being significantly easier to use than the guidance inter-face. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

To address this issue, we propose new types of reusable artifacts called Entity Instance Repository (EIR) and Relationship Instance Repository (RIR), which contain ER modeling patterns from prior designs and serve as knowledge-based repositories for conceptual modeling. We explore the development of automated data modeling tools with EIR and RIR. We also select six data modeling rules used for identification of entities in one of the tools. Two tools were developed in this study: Heuristic-Based Technique (HBT) and Entity Instance Pattern WordNet (EIPW). The goals of this study are (1) to find effective approaches that can improve the novice modelers' performance in developing conceptual models by integrating pattern-based technique and various modeling techniques, (2) to evaluate whether those selected six modeling rules are effective, and (3) to validate whether the proposed tools are effective in creating quality data models. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the tools, empirical testing was conducted on tasks of different sizes. The empirical results indicate that novice designers' overall performance increased 30.9 similar to 46.0% when using EIPW, and increased 33.5 similar to 34.9% when using HBT, compared with the cases with no tools.

A business modeling tool called conceptual data modeling (CDM) was proposed by the MASP Association in Japan. This tool creates a diagram called the "Organization Model." This diagram shows information flow between organizations, and derives ideal state. However, the diagram doesn't have business details, quantitative data and qualitative data. Therefore, it is difficult for a person without business knowledge to derive ideal state. This paper proposes a new analysis method using CDM and Theory of Constraints (TOC). In particular, "Assumptions" obtained by the Conflict Resolution Diagram (CRD) of TOC are mapped to the Organization Model. By the proposed method, we can derive many candidates in greater depth for business process engineering, compared with the conventional CDM.

This paper presents the design and usage of a language for conceptual data modeling in Model-based Systems Engineering. Based on an existing analysis of presently employed data modeling languages, a new conceptual data modeling language is defined that brings together characteristic features from software engineering languages, features from languages classically employed for knowledge engineering, as well as entirely newly developed functional aspects. This language has been applied to model a spacecraft as an example, demonstrating its utility for developing complex, multidisciplinary systems in the scope of Model-based Space Systems Engineering.

The engineering of complex systems is more and more supported through computer-based models that rely on a comprehensive specification of their underlying data. This paper reflects on extensive industrial experience with a sophisticated application of conceptual data modeling, addressing requirements as they arise in the context of space systems engineering. For this purpose identified needs for conceptual data modeling in the scope of Model-Based Systems Engineering are formulated. Established and evolving approaches and technologies for building conceptual data models are characterized, analyzed, and discussed regarding their suitability for modeling engineering data. Based on this analysis of the state of the art, recommendations for the future evolution of conceptual data modeling are formulated.
