A Formal Approach to implement java exceptions in cooperative systems

The increasing number of systems that work on the top of cooperating elements have required new techniques to control cooperation on both normal and abnormal behaviors of systems. The controllability of the normal behaviors has received more attention because they are concerned with the users expectations, while for the abnormal behaviors it is left to designers and programmers. However, for cooperative systems, the abnormal behaviors, mostly represented by exceptions at programming level, become an important issue in software development because they can affect the overall system behavior. If an exception is raised and not handled accordingly, the system may collapse. To avoid such situation, certain concepts and models have been proposed to coordinate propagation and recovering of exceptional behaviors, including the Coordinated Atomic Actions (CAA). Regardless of the effort in creating these conceptual models, an actual implementation of them in real systems is not very straightforward. This article provides a reliable framework for the implementation of Java exceptions propagation and recovery using CAA concepts. To do this, a Java framework (based on a formal specification) is presented, together with a set of properties to be preserved and proved with the Java Pathfinder (JPF) model checker. In practice, to develop new systems based on the given coordination concepts, designers/programmers can instantiate the framework to implement the exceptional behavior and then verify the correctness of the resulting code using JPF. Therefore, by using the framework, designers programmers can reuse the provided CAA implementation and instantiate fault-tolerant Java systems. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Architectures based on Coordinated Atomic action (CA action) concepts have been used to build concurrent fault-tolerant systems. This conceptual model combines concurrent exception handling with action nesting to provide a general mechanism for both enclosing interactions among system components and coordinating forward error recovery measures. This article presents an architectural model to guide the formal specification of concurrent fault-tolerant systems. This architecture provides built-in Communicating Sequential Processes (CSPs) and predefined channels to coordinate exception handling of the user-defined components. Hence some safety properties concerning action scoping and concurrent exception handling can be proved by using the FDR (Failure Divergence Refinement) verification tool. As a result, a formal and general architecture supporting software fault tolerance is ready to be used and proved as users define components with normal and exceptional behaviors. In programming distributed object-oriented systems, there are several approaches for achieving binary interactions in a multiprocess environment. Usually these approaches take care only of synchronisation or communication. In this paper we describe a way of designing and implementing a more general concept: multiparty interactions. In a multiparty interaction, several parties (objects or processes) somehow “come together” to produce an intermediate and temporary combined state, use this state to execute some activity, and then leave this interaction and continue their normal execution. The concept of multiparty interactions has been investigated by several researchers, but to the best of our knowledge none have considered how failures in one or more participants of the multiparty interaction can be dealt with. In this paper, we propose a general scheme for constructing dependable multiparty interactions in a distributed object-oriented system, and describe its implementation in Java. In particular, we extend the notion of multiparty interaction to include facilities for handling exceptions. To show how our scheme can be used, we use our framework to build an abstraction mechanism that supports cooperative and competitive concurrency in distributed systems. This mechanism is then applied to program a system in which multiparty interactions are more than simple synchronisations or communications.

We address the problem of how to handle exceptions in distributed object-oriented systems. In a distributed computing environment exceptions may be raised simultaneously and thus need to be treated in a coordinated manner. We take two kinds of concurrency into account: 1) several objects are designed collectively and invoked concurrently to achieve a global goal, and 2) concurrent objects or object groups that are designed independently compete for the same system resources. We propose a new distributed algorithm for resolving concurrent exceptions and show that the algorithm works correctly even in complex nested situations, and is an improvement over previous proposals in that it requires only O(N²) messages, and is fully object-oriented.
