Data Falsification Attacks on consensus-Based Detection Systems

This paper considers the problem of signal detection in distributed networks in the presence of data falsification (Byzantine) attacks. Detection approaches considered in the paper are based on fully distributed consensus algorithms, where all of the nodes exchange information only with their neighbors in the absence of a fusion center. For such networks, we first characterize the negative effect of Byzantines on the steady state and transient detection performance of conventional consensus-based detection algorithms. To avoid performance deterioration, we propose a distributed weighted average consensus algorithm that is robust to Byzantine attacks. We show that, under reasonable assumptions, the global test statistic for detection can be computed locally at each node using our proposed consensus algorithm. We exploit the statistical distribution of the nodes' data to devise techniques for mitigating the influence of data falsifying Byzantines on the distributed detection system. Since some parameters of the statistical distribution of the nodes' data might not be known a priori, we propose learning based techniques to enable an adaptive design of the local fusion or update rules. Numerical results are presented for illustration.

This brief presents coordination and control for heating energy distribution in building automation systems. Building thermal networks consist of rooms that are interconnected through communication and physical heat transfer networks. Since there exist heat generation constraints and temperature constraints of rooms, it is required to coordinate heat generation at each room and control heat flows among rooms. The temperature of each room is determined by heat generation coordination and heat flow control. In this brief, the heating energy distribution is achieved by consensus-based coordination and control in a distributed manner. consensus schemes using only local information are employed to the heat generation coordination and the heat flow control. The validity of the proposed approaches is investigated through an illustrative example.

Blockchain systems based on the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus introduce entropy to the system in a natural way due to the randomness of mining. However, for non-PoW consensus (e.g., proof-of-stake and delegated proof-of-stake consensus) blockchain systems, a different approach to introducing entropy, such as the distributed random number generation (dRNG) algorithm, must be established. The dRNG algorithm is one of the key challenges in developing the consensus mechanism, as well as one of the relevant parameters for determining the merit of the consensus mechanism. In this paper, we first derive a publicly verifiable quantum random numbers generation protocol based on the certifiable randomness scheme from any untrusted quantum device, which offers features, such as fairness, no trusted third party, and publicly verifiable. Then, based on verifiable quantum random numbers, we propose a new consensus algorithm. The algorithm selects block proposer and block verification committees for each round using verifiable quantum random numbers, resulting in better randomness, fairness, and efficiency of the entire consensus process. In addition, the new consensus algorithm is not only resistant to adaptive adversary models as well as to collusion attacks, but also requires negligible computation for each user to avoid unnecessary consumption of power resources. Finally, we analyze the verifiable randomness, fairness, liveness, and communication complexity of the consensus algorithm.

In this letter, we study the problem of distributed detection and tracking of a target over a network of separately located Doppler-shift sensors. For this challenging problem, we propose consensus Gaussian mixture - Bernoulli (CGM-Ber) filter. The simulation results prove the robust and effective performance of the proposed approach in a challenging tracking scenario.

Microarray data is a key source of experimental data for modelling gene regulatory interactions from expression levels. With the rapid increase of publicly available microarray data comes the opportunity to produce regulatory network models based on multiple datasets. Such models are potentially more robust With greater confidence, and place less reliance on a single dataset. However, combining datasets directly can be difficult as experiments are often conducted on different microarray platforms, and in different laboratories leading to inherent biases in the data that are not always removed through pre-processing such as normalisation. In this paper we compare two frameworks for combining microarray datasets to model regulatory networks: pre- and post-learning aggregation. In pre-learning approaches, Such as using simple scale-normalisation prior to the concatenation of datasets, a model is learnt from a combined dataset, whilst in post-learning aggregation individual models are learnt from each dataset and the models are combined. We present two novel approaches for post-learning aggregation, each based on aggregating high-level features of Bayesian network models that have been generated from different microarray expression datasets. Meta-analysis Bayesian networks are based on combining statistical confidences attached to network edges whilst consensus Bayesian networks identify consistent network features across all datasets. We apply both approaches to multiple datasets from synthetic and real (Escherichia coli and yeast) networks and demonstrate that both methods can improve on networks learnt from a single dataset or an aggregated dataset formed using a standard scale-normalisation. The present paper considers distributed consensus algorithms that involve N agents evolving on a connected compact homogeneous manifold. The agents track no external reference and communicate their relative state according to a communication graph. The consensus problem is formulated in terms of the extrema of a cost function. This leads to efficient gradient algorithms to synchronize (i.e., maximizing the consensus) or balance (i.e., minimizing the consensus) the agents;a convenient adaptation of the gradient algorithms is used when the communication graph is directed and time-varying. The cost function is linked to a specific centroid definition on manifolds, introduced here as the induced arithmetic mean, that is easily computable in closed form and may be of independent interest for a number of manifolds. The special orthogonal group SO(n) and the Grassmann manifold Grass(p, n) are treated as original examples. A link is also drawn with the many existing results on the circle.

Voltage Stability and Reactive Power Sharing in Inverter-Based Microgrids With consensus-Based Distributed Voltage Control

We propose a consensus-based distributed voltage control (DVC) that solves the problem of reactive power sharing in autonomous inverter-based microgrids with dominantly inductive power lines and arbitrary electrical topology. Opposed to other control strategies available thus far, the control presented here does guarantee a desired reactive power distribution in steady state while only requiring distributed communication among inverters, i.e., no central computing nor communication unit is needed. For inductive impedance loads and under the assumption of small phase angle differences between the output voltages of the inverters, we prove that the choice of the control parameters uniquely determines the corresponding equilibrium point of the closed-loop voltage and reactive power dynamics. In addition, for the case of uniform time constants of the power measurement filters, a necessary and sufficient condition for local exponential stability of that equilibrium point is given. The compatibility of the DVC with the usual frequency droop control for inverters is shown and the performance of the proposed DVC is compared with the usual voltage droop control via simulation of a microgrid based on the Conseil International des Grands Reseaux Electriques (CIGRE) benchmark medium voltage distribution network.

This paper explores the design problem of consensus algorithms in a class of convex geometric metric spaces. Using the techniques of convex analysis and possibility analysis, a simple assumption for designing consensus algorithms in a strict max-convex space is proposed, under which all dynamical points in a system achieve consensus asymptotically if and only if their associated interaction graph uniformly contains at least one directed spanning tree. Three efficient consensus algorithms under the assumption are presented, and their applications are demonstrated together with efficiency studies.

A distributed double-layer control algorithm for medium voltage regulation and state of charge consensus of autonomous battery energy storage systems in distribution networks

The increasing integration of Distributed Generation (DG) based on Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in traditional distribution systems necessitates the adoption of smart grid strategies. These strategies rely heavily on energy storage actuation to manage the inherent variability of RES and ensure autonomous operation. This article presents a hierarchical digital control strategy for managing distribution power systems, utilizing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to regulate voltage amplitude and enhance overall behavior for efficient energy management. At the primary control level, operating at a minute-scale actuation rate, an integral voltage regulation loop determines the BESS power injection or consumption, refined by a fuzzy conditioning of signals that accounts for the state of charge and operational modes of each device. Laplacian and random switching secondary consensus control strategies, operating at a slower rate, ensure coordinated action among individual units. The convergence of these strategies is analytically validated using Lyapunov's theory under idealized conditions. Extensive dynamic simulations over a 24-hour period demonstrate the proposed strategy's effectiveness in improving power quality and coordinating voltage regulation, particularly in terms of enhancing the power factor and reducing the standard deviation of voltage and power variables over time in a coordinated manner.

Dynamic average consensus via nonlinear protocols

This paper addresses the dynamic average consensus problem under nonlinear protocols for networks of dynamic agents. In this problem, each agent aims to track the average of time-varying reference inputs of all the agents in the network by local communication with neighbors. We propose a class of continuous-time nonlinear protocols for this problem, and theoretical analyses for two cases are provided: (1) undirected networks with switching topologies and (2) balanced directed networks with switching topologies. Based upon the analysis results, design procedures for nonlinear protocols are presented. Simulations are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design procedures.
