Due to the increasing need to individualizemass products, product configurators are becoming more and more a manifest in the environment of business to customer retailers. Furthermore, technology-driven companies try to formalize expert knowledge to maintain their most valuable asset - their technological know-how. Consequently, insulated and diversified knowledge bases are created leading to complex challenges whenever knowledge needs to be consolidated. In this paper, wepresent the ConMerge-Algorithm which can integrate two constraint-based knowledge bases by applying redundancy detection and conflict detection. based on detected conflicts, our algorithm applies resolution strategies and assures consistency of the resulting knowledge bases. Furthermore, the user can choose the operation mode of the algorithm: keeping all configuration solutions of each individual input knowledge base or only solutions which are valid in both original knowledge bases. With this method of knowledge base arbitration, the ability to consolidating distributed product configuration knowledge bases is provided.

In this paper, we outline our constraint-based model for configuring and reconfiguring industrial products as well as some aspects of its prototypical implementation ConBaCon (constraint-based configuration). ConBaCon overcomes the deficits of existing commercial configuration systems. Problems remain in the case of large products/ technical systems. As one way of tackling this, we present a clustering approach within the ConBaCon model that allows large configuration problems to be efficiently solved by substantially reducing the amount of constraint variables and constraints needed.

configuration and diagnosis problem-solvers are commonly championed as successes of applied artificial intelligence techniques. A common problem is that problem-solvers typically encode task-specific representation assumptions and simplifications in their domain theories, hindering the reuse of the domain theories between the problem-solvers. While model-based reasoning techniques have been shown to provide an interesting approach to sharing component and device specifications, their respective mechanisations are generally too inefficient. We show how constraint logic programming languages provide a flexible environment in which constraint-based specifications can be effectively shared and efficiently mechanised by exploiting constraint solving and propagation techniques tightly integrated with the backtracking search mechanism of logic programming languages. A component specification language is presented and the mappings from the language to the constraint system and strategies for guiding the search are defined for the respective problem-solvers.
