Model-free parameter tuning with continuous genetic algorithm: Application to virtual controlled object-based active vibration controller

Active vibration control is a powerful approach to provide higher damping effects over a broad range of frequencies. However, most of them generally involve a modeling process of a controlled structure, complicating the controller design. The main contribution of this study is to present a novel tuning scheme of a model-free active oscillation controller based on continuous genetic algorithm (CGA), which can simplify a controller design process by eliminating the need for plant modeling. The model-free controller is developed using a virtual controlled object (VCO) as its foundation. VCO makes it possible to construct an active damping controller without knowing any specifications of a real controlled structure. In the offline tuning of the design variables of the controller, we use a reference-controlled object (RCO) - a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure defined by the designer - to assess the damping level instead of the actual controlled structure model. This evaluation is feasible due to the robustness of the VCO-based design, which accommodates variations in the controlled object structures. The application of the CGA, which has the global search ability, enables automatically specifying the optimal parameter values without costly trial-and-error works. The effectiveness of the auto-optimized model-free damping controller is demonstrated through numerical examples across different mechanical systems, with comparisons made to a trial-and-error-tuned controller. The main finding is that the controller can reduce the vibration amplitudes even though plant modeling of the actual controlled objects is not accompanied at all. As the representative results, the resonance peaks of two different cantilever plates were suppressed by 14.38 and 27.13 dB in the low-frequency band. The detailed-specification-independent nature provided by the model-free design makes it possible to apply the resultant controller to various structures because the robustness is enforced

Fault section estimation in power system using Hebb's rule and continuous genetic algorithm

In this paper a new approach for fault section estimation (FSE) in electrical power system is presented. We propose a procedure to obtain objective function (required for fault section estimation) using the Hebb's learning rule. The continuous genetic algorithm (CGA) optimization method is then employed to estimate the fault section making use of the objective function. The Hebb's learning law used in this paper gives, linear algebraic equations, to represent the targets in terms of the status of relays and circuit breakers (CBs). This gives a simple objective function, which leads to reduction in time required by the CGA to identify fault section. The CGA gives an advantage of requiring less storage than binary genetic algorithm (GA). Also the CGA is inherently faster than binary GA. The proposed approach is tested on various systems, and is found to give correct results in all cases. Simulation results for two illustrations have been presented in this paper. The results show that the proposed approach can find the solution efficiently even in case of multiple Faults or in case of failure of relays/circuit breakers. Integration of growing self-organizing map and continuous genetic algorithm for grading lithium-ion battery cells

This study attempts to employ growing self-organizing map (GSOM) algorithm and continuous genetic algorithm (CGA)-based SOM (CGASOM) to improve the performance of SOM neural network (SOMnn). The proposed GSOM + CGASOM approach for SOMnn is consisted of two stages. The first stage determines the SOMnn topology using GSOM algorithm while the weights are fine-tuned by using CGASOM algorithm in the second stage. The proposed CGASOM algorithm is compared with other two clustering algorithms using four benchmark data sets, Iris, Wine, Vowel, and Glass. The simulation results indicate that CGASOM algorithm is able to find the better solution. Additionally, the proposed approach has been also employed to grade Lithium-ion cells and characterize the quality inspection rules. The results can assist the battery manufacturers to improve the quality and decrease the costs of battery design and manufacturing. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Numerical solution of systems of second-order boundary value problems using continuous genetic algorithm

In this paper, continuous genetic algorithm is introduced as an efficient solver for systems of second-order boundary value problems where smooth solution curves are used throughout the evolution of the algorithm to obtain the required nodal values of the unknown variables. The solution methodology is based on representing each derivative in the system of differential equations by its finite difference approximation. After that, the overall residue for all nodes in the given system of differential equations is formulated. The solution to the system of differential equations is then converted into the problem of minimizing the overall residue or maximizing the fitness function based on the nodal values generated from the genetic operators. Three numerical test problems including linear and nonlinear systems were analyzed to illustrate the procedure and confirm the performance of the proposed method. In addition to that, a convergence and sensitivity analysis to genetic operators and control parameters of the algorithm has been carried out. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is a robust and accurate procedure for solving Systems of second-order boundary value problems. Furthermore, the obtained accuracy for the solutions using CGA is much better than the results obtained using some modern methods. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a wind turbine planning problem through generating the different possible scenarios in order to reduce the annual costs of the distribution system. Since the wind turbines output power has a high dependency in wind speed, and the wind speed has an intermittent nature, so modeling of these units is an interesting issue in distribution system studies. This paper considers a specific Rayleigh distribution function for the wind speed in each hour and the different possible scenarios of wind turbine generation with the related probabilities are determined for each hour. Finally the appropriate size and site of the wind turbines is calculated based on all of the defined scenarios. The presented problem is applied on a 9 bus test distribution system using continuous genetic algorithm.

In the most applications in remote sensing, there is no need to use all of available data, such as using all of bands in hyperspectral images. In this paper, a new band selection method was proposed to deal with the large number of hyperspectral images bands. We proposed a continuous genetic algorithm (CGA) to achieve the best subset of hyperspectral images bands, without decreasing Overall Accuracy (OA) index in classification. In the proposed CGA, a multi-class SVM was used as a classifier. Comparing results achieved by the CGA with those achieved by the Binary GA (BGA) shows better performances in the proposed CGA method. At the end, 56 bands were selected as the best bands for classification with OA of 78.5 %.

In this contribution we consider the problem of flux identification in a scalar conservation law modeling the phenomenon of sedimentation. The experimental observation data used for the calibration consist of a solid concentration profile at a fixed time. The identification problem is formulated as an optimization one, where the distance between the profiles of the model simulation and observation data is minimized by a least squares cost function. The direct problem is approximated by a monotone finite volume scheme. The numerical solution of the calibration problem is obtained by a continuous genetic algorithm. Numerical results are presented in order to validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The optimization by a continuous genetic algorithm turns out to be more robust than previous calibration attempts with a gradient method. The calibration of the model uses a set of measurements along the column at a fixed time t = T. Sidelobes in the radiation pattern causes degradation of actual signal and hence antenna power efficiency. This paper discusses the problem of interference suppression by reducing the side lobe. Synthesis of linear antenna array using continuous genetic algorithm is done to search for the optimum amplitude weights to minimize the maximum side lobe level. It has been demonstrated that side lobe level is reduced effectively by this technique. The simulated results shows an improved directivity, reduction in the first side lobe and fast convergence. This shows the effectiveness of this technique.

This work proposes a multi-objective voltage control for multiple Electric Springs (ESs) in active unbalanced distribution systems, where the goal is to provide a suitable simulation scheme to control the ESs in real-time applications. This multi-objective voltage control relies on a robust ES model, a modified backward/forward solution method (BFSM), and a continuous genetic algorithm (CGA). The proposed ES model is suitable for unbalanced conditions and can be implemented at any network location in single-, two-, and three-phase connections. Also, it considers the self and mutual effects of the distribution line (DL) and the power flow of the elements connected at the point of common coupling (PCC) to determine the ES output voltage. The ES model is adapted to the BFSM to quickly and reliably solve the power flow in the distribution network. Besides, the CGA simultaneously solves the mode of operation and the amount of reactive power exchange of the ESs to minimize power losses, voltage unbalance, and voltage deviation. The proposed voltage control is evaluated on an active distribution network based on a modified IEEE 13-bus for considering both load variations and power intermittences.

In this paper, a numerical algorithm, based on the use of genetic algorithm technique, is presented for solving a class of nonlinear systems of second-order boundary value problems. In this technique, the system is formulated as an optimization problem by the direct minimization of the overall individual residual error subject to the given constraints boundary condtions, and is then solved using continuous genetic algorithm. In general, the proposed technique uses smooth operators and avoids sharp jumps in the parameter values. The applicability, efficiency, and accuracy of the proposed algorithm for the solution of different problems is investigated. Meanwhile, the convergence analysis based on the resulting statistical data is also discussed.
