Stream processing has become an important research issue with the increase in stream data sources. Many stream processing systems need to reference non-streaming resources such as database relations to answer real world queries. Since database relation is a shared entity, it may be updated during the continuous query (CQ) execution by other database clients resulting in inconsistent query results (partly using the relation before update and partly after update). For this problem, an isolation model is needed to define the way in which these updates are reflected in the output of the stream-relation join. In this work we propose an incremental CQ processing approach with isolation guarantees which makes use of a monitor operator to transform the relational updates into stream tuples. Since database relations tend to be large, an in-memory T*-Tree index is used to increase the stream-relation join efficiency. Experiments are performed to prove that guaranteeing isolation solves the inconsistency problem and to show that the incremental computation and indexing improves the query throughput significantly.

In this paper, we study a new variant of trajectory similarity search from the context of continuous query processing. Given a moving object from s to d, following a reference route T-r, we monitor the trajectory similarity between the reference route and the current partial route at each timestamp for online detour detection. Since existing trajectory distance measures fail to adequately capture the deviation between a partial route and a complete route, we propose a partial trajectory similarity measure to bridge the gap. In particular, we enumerate all the possible routes extended from the partial route to reach the destination d and calculate their minimum distance to T-r. We consider deviation calculation in both euclidean space and road networks. In euclidean space, we can directly infer the optimal future path with the minimum trajectory distance. In road networks, we propose an efficient expansion algorithm with a suite of pruning rules. Furthermore, we propose efficient incremental processing strategies to facilitate continuous query processing for moving objects. Our experiments are conducted on multiple real datasets and the experimental results verify the efficiency of our query processing algorithms.

Evaluating Safe Region Sizes for Accuracy in Approximate continuous Nearest Neighbour Queries

In this paper, the accuracy of the safe region approach for an approximate continuous nearest neighbour strategy is studied and evaluated. In location based services (LBS), a safe region is utilized for processing continuous queries locally on a user's device by many proposed strategies. However, for some strategies, the safe region may not contain all of the points that are in the area covered by it, which leads to approximate query processing. This paper explores a cluster-based safe region approach that is proposed in the literature. The goal is to determine if 100% accuracy can be achieved. Results show that factors such as the number and size of the clusters, the underlying cluster model, and the distribution of the data play a factor in the accuracy of the continuous query using the cluster-based safe region.

As the utilization of graph streams in various applications increases, a continuous subgraph matching scheme is required to search for subgraphs that change in real time. In this paper, we present a novel and effective continuous subgraph matching scheme that leverages indexing and employs distributed processing in graph stream environments. To achieve distributed processing, we employ a query graph decomposition policy based on the degree of nodes, allowing us to manage the decomposed subqueries as an index. By reusing indexing information, we significantly reduce the indexing load, which becomes crucial in scenarios where multiple queries are issued simultaneously. To optimize query allocation in the distributed environment, we introduce a cost model that accurately calculates the indexing load for each server. This ensures a balanced distribution of queries, enhancing overall system performance. To perform distributed processing efficiently in stream environments, the proposed scheme is implemented in Storm. We conduct various performance evaluations to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme.

In recent years, many researchers have paid attention to skyline queries in road network. The continuous skyline queries for moving objects are particularly complex, especially when we consider the moving query point. Existing studies mainly focus on objects search bound and distance calculation, aiming to reduce the cost of repetitive dominant computing, but there is still a lot of work can be deepened, such as how to eliminate invalid calculations furtherly and how to consider the traits of complex practice adequately. Pointing to this problem, we construct a model of moving state of object (MSO) considering the relations between the object's moving state and query in this paper. Based on the model, an efficient algorithm handling the continuous skyline query of moving objects in road networks is proposed. Extensive experiments show that the performance of our proposed method can reduce the event queue of query processing effectively and then reduce the cost of CPU compared with contrast methods.

In many applications, a graph is often utilized to represent an interrelation among objects. Especially, as IoT and social network services, which represent relationships among objects as a graph, continue to grow, many studies has been conducted to handle graph streams that are generated in real time. In this paper, we propose a continuous subgraph matching scheme based on the query decomposition considering the node degree in graph streams. In order to reuse the index, we decompose the query based on the degree information and then manage the decomposed subqueries as index. The decomposed subqueries are reused or decomposed again by the generated query. The proposed scheme also reuses the existing computed results through the decomposed indexes, which results in reducing the load of query processing. We demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme through various performance evaluations in real world datasets.

Dynamic energy-aware sensor configuration in multi-application monitoring systems

A typical pervasive monitoring system like a smart building depends on an infrastructure composed of hundreds of heterogeneous wireless sensor devices. Managing the energy consumption of these devices poses a challenging problem that affects the overall efficiency and usability. Existing approaches for sensor energy consumption typically assume a single monitoring application to consume sensor data and a static configuration for sensor devices. In this paper, we focus on a multi-application context with dynamic requirements and multi-modal sensor devices. We present 3SoSM, an approach to optimize interactions between application requirements and wireless sensor environment in real-time. It relies on an energy-aware dynamic configuration of sensor devices to lower energy consumption while fulfilling application requirements. To bind together sensor configuration and dynamic management of data streams, we design a sustainable multi-application monitoring system architecture for pervasive environments that collects application requirements for sensor data streams and optimizes them into sensor configurations. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, a set of experiments are designed in the context of smart buildings. We comparatively evaluate our approach to show how dynamic sensor configuration for multiple monitoring applications indeed outperforms the mainstream duty-cycling method. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Smart building management systems become very popular research topics due to high energy consumption of buildings in developed countries. Proposed approaches in the literature commonly focus on smart building energy management systems to improve this high consumption and on network communications between deployed devices. However, these approaches are specialized for a single monitoring application, and adopt static wireless sensor device configurations. In this study, we focus on the energy and lifetime of the monitoring architecture itself. We consider a monitoring system as a set of applications that exploit sensor measures in real-time, where these applications are declaratively expressed as (service-oriented) continuous queries over sensor data streams. We tackle the optimization of interactions between application real-time requirements for data and wireless sensor devices that produces those data. In this context, we present a novel approach, an energy-aware dynamic sensor configuration mechanism for a sustainable declarative monitoring architecture that can support multiple applications. We first introduce formalization of application requirements and sensor configuration based on data acquisition/transmission and continuous stream queries. We then propose a self-adaptive energy-aware algorithm that dynamically generates optimized sensor configurations based on real-time query requirements. We also present a SmartService Stream-oriented Sensor Management (3SoSM) Gateway that optimizes sensor configurations and manages sensor data streams. Finally, we present a set of experiments we conducted with a wireless sensor network simulator and with a real Smart Building platform.

Although most of the existing skyline queries algorithms focused basically on querying static points through static databases;with the expanding number of sensors, wireless communications and mobile applications, the demand for continuous skyline queries has increased. Unlike traditional skyline queries which only consider static attributes, continuous skyline queries include dynamic attributes, as well as the static ones. However, as skyline queries computation is based on checking the domination of skyline points over all dimensions, thus, considering both the static and dynamic attributes without separation is required. In this paper we present an efficient algorithm for computing continuous skyline queries without discriminating between static and dynamic attributes. Our algorithm in brief proceeds as follows: First, it excludes the points which will not be in the initial skyline result;this pruning phase reduces the required number of comparisons. Second, the association between the spatial positions of data points is examined;this phase gives an idea of where changes in the result might occur and consequently enables us to efficiently update the skyline result (continuous update) rather than computing the skyline from scratch. Finally, experimental evaluation is provided which demonstrates the accuracy, performance and efficiency of our algorithm over other existing approaches.

High energy consumption of sensor devices is a major problem in smart building systems, since it strongly impacts the system lifetime. However, existing approaches are often fitted to a single monitoring application and rely on static configurations for sensor devices: optimization of their acquisition and transmission frequencies to actual multiple application requirements is not tackled. In this paper, we focus on energy-aware dynamic sensor device re-configuration to lower energy consumption while fulfilling real-time application requirements. We introduce the Smart-Service Stream-oriented Sensor Management (3SoSM) that binds together sensor configuration and management of sensor data streams. We present a multi-application monitoring system architecture that optimizes application requirements for data streams into sensor device configurations, and we relate the experiments with our experimental platform.
