The paper describes a technique for the optimisation of the parameter settings of the excitation controller of a synchronous machine which is suitable for on-site use. The optimisation method is based on an integral squarederror criterion, and involves the use of parameter sensitivity functions to estimate the parameter changes needed to alter system responses to approach some predetermined or desirable form. The computation of the parameter sensitivity functions is achieved by a direct method, which does not demand explicit identification of the controlled system and which yields the sensitivity functions of all output variables to all adjustable parameters from the results of a single-step test. The technique may be implemented using a small digital computer. The paper includes the results of simulation studies on unsynchronised and on loaded generators, together with results of micromachine experiments.

Initialisation, decoupling, hot start, and warm start in direct nonlinear interior point algorithm for optimal power flows

Effective approaches dealing with four important issues in a direct nonlinear interior point algorithm (DNIPA) for optimal power flows (OPF) are presented. The first issue, initialisation, is important for the robustness of DNIPA;the second issue, decoupling, is important for OFF applications. The other two issues are particularly important to OFF performance in energy management systems. The approaches enhance the performance of DNIPA for OFF problems in terms of iteration counts and CPU times. Extensive numerical tests are performed on two different sizes of real-life systems: :244- and 2423-bus systems. Based on these results, the initialisation approach improves direct nonlinear predictor-corrector primal-dual interior point algorithm (PCPDIPA) by 24%, in term of CPU times. The decoupling approach enhances PCPDIPA (with initialisation) by 27%. The hot start and warm start solve the problems about 2.0 and 2.7 times, respectively, faster than PCPDIPA with initialisation, and 2.5 and 3.3 times, respectively, faster than PCPDIPA without using initialisation.

Developing HSS iteration schemes for solving the quadratic matrix equation AX²+ BX +C=0

The quadratic matrix equation (QME)Q(X)= AX(2 )+ BX +C = 0occurs in the branches such as the quadratic eigenvalue problems and quasi-birth-death processes. Also, the numerical solution of QMEs is an essential step in many computational methods for linear-quadratic and robust control, filtering, controller order reduction, inner-outer factorization, spectral factorization, and other applications. In this study, schemes are presented to solve the QME based on the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS). It is shown that the proposed schemes converge to the solutions of the QME. Finally, some examples are solved to discover the application of the schemes in comparison with Newton's method.

Expert system for enhancing voltage security/stability in power systems

The paper presents an expert system for enhancing both the voltage security and the voltage stability in power systems. The expert system is implemented to improve the voltage profile when contingencies are less severe and to adopt appropriate control actions to prevent the system from collapsing when severe contingencies are encountered. The sensitivity for a change of the load voltage to a variation of the on-load-tap-changer (OLTC) tap is used to verify the requirement of locking OLTC taps for operators. A new model, incorporated with variables for both the real power and the terminal voltage, for the reactive-power limit of a generator is presented for the voltage-stability studies. A real 256-bus system is used to serve as an example for demonstrating the performance of the proposed expert system.

An overview of distributed simulation of discrete event systems and the issues associated with it. Alternative approaches for decomposing the simulation into tasks that can be run on separate processors are described, and the potential parallelism associated with certain kinds of decomposition is studied. Use of an optimal criterion for co-ordinating FACTS-based stabilisers

The closed-loop characteristic polynomial is applied to design and co-ordinate multiple stabilisers to enhance power system damping. The proposed solution indirectly takes into account different operating conditions to design robust stabilisers based on local measurements. The effectiveness of the procedure is demonstrated through digital simulations on a three-machine power system including a TCSC and a UPFC. Results illustrate that the designed stabilisers contribute significantly to improve the power system dynamic behaviour over different loading conditions.

Current controller for active power filter based on optimal voltage space vector

A hysteresis current controller for an active power filter based on the optimal voltage space vector is proposed. The controller jointly utilises two sets of phase current difference comparators to determine the location region of the reference voltage space vector and the current error space vector. When the system reference voltage space vector is changing rapidly and randomly. which makes its location region very difficult to estimate, the novel controller can quickly detect its location region by a trial-and-error process which is essential to the performance improvement of active power filter. The related concept and formulation are presented. Computer simulation is conducted on a test system and the results show that the controller can quickly deter-mine the optimal voltage space vector. therefore effectively reducing the current tracking error. Since the new controller can reduce VSI switching frequency, it can reduce the switching loss and improve APF efficiency noticeably.
