Distributed testing without encountering controllability and observability problems

The objective of testing is to determine whether a system under test conforms to its specification. In distributed test architectures that utilize remote testers, this objective can be complicated by the fact that testers may encounter problems relating to controllability and observability during the application of a test sequence. Existing solutions to these problems involve first constructing a test sequence from the specification of an implementation under test, and then inserting coordination messages or appending selected test subsequences that prevent the occurrences of controllability and observability problems during the application of the resulting test sequence. This paper proposes a method that utilizes a set of transformation rules to construct an auxiliary directed graph from a given specification, and constructs a rural Chinese postman tour in this graph to yield a minimum-length test sequence where there is no potential controllability or observability problems, and where the use of coordination messages is minimized. A JESS AGENT Based Architecture for Testing Distributed Systems

The paper presents some technical issues for testing distributed frameworks with rules based Agent System. The proposed approach consists firstly on exploring the benefits of rule based systems to design communication between different components of the distributed test application and then it deals with the distribution of rules over the testers to ensure their coordination without the need of a centralized manager system. The presented work describes our algorithm allowing the generation of the local rules to be respected by each tester and how we can use JESS in a multi-agent system. We compared also our results to those obtained in the centralized approach, where the antecedents of a rule can be in different testers, thus the tester can't decide when to enable the rule and that we will need a shared knowledge base to manage such situations.

The objective of testing is to determine whether an implementation under test conforms to its specification. In distributed test architectures involving multiple remote testers, this objective can be complicated by the fact that testers may encounter coordination problems relating to controllability (synchronization) and observability during the application of tests. Based on a finite state machine (FSM) specification of the externally observable behaviour of a distributed system and a distinguishing sequence, this paper proposes a method for constructing a checking sequence where there is no potential controllability or observability problems, and where the use of external coordination message exchanges among testers is minimized. The proposed method does not assume a reliable reset feature in the implementations of the given FSM to be tested by the resulting checking sequence.

In the distributed test context, where a set of parallel testers exchange some I/O messages to perform the test, the implementation process must consider the mechanisms and functions required to support interaction as long as the communication and the coordination between distributed testing components. The typical reactions of such systems are the generation of errors such as time outs, locks, channels and network failures. Nowadays, rule based systems provide an interesting approach for representing and interpreting such kind of messages exchange using the artificial intelligence features. In this paper, we suggest two algorithms allowing the generation of rules to be respected by the test system to avoid the coordination/synchronization problems. Then, we explain the advantages of the study and how the proposed architecture based on expert systems can avoid the use of the coordination messages and resolve the coordination problems. Thus, the testers will exchange only the observation messages which will reduce significantly the use of external messages and I/O operations.

The emphasis of recent works is focused on the use of rules based systems that describe the system behavior by simple rules which increase the flexibility and easiness of programming. In the context of the distributed test where a set of parallel testers exchange I/O messages to perform the test, some potential problems of coordination can arise amongst remote testers. These problems are usually known as controllability and observability issues. We present in this paper our approach based on the use of a rule based multi-agent system to overcome such problems.
