Proportional-integral-derivative control system has been widely used in industrial applications. For complex systems, tuning controller parameters to satisfy the process requirements is very challenging. Different methods have been proposed to solve the problem. However these methods suffer several problems, such as dealing with system complexity, minimizing tuning effort and balancing different performance indices including rise time, settling time, steady-state error and overshoot. In this paper, we develop an automatic controller parameter optimization method based on Gaussian process regression Bayesian optimization algorithm. A non-parametric model is constructed using Gaussian process regression. By combining Gaussian process regression with Bayesian optimization algorithm, potential candidate can be predicted and applied to guide the optimization process. Both experiments and simulation were performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The occurrence of high frequency resonances(HFRs)has been frequently observed in several MMC-HVDC *** avoid these HFRs,the controller design of an MMC must satisfy two requirements:1)The controller should remain stable while in the high frequency range,and 2)MMC impedance should not possess a negative real part in the high frequency *** far,majority of the related studies on MMC controller design have been unable to address these requirements *** paper first describes the simplified high frequency MMC impedance model developed indigenously by the ***,the driving mechanism of two kinds of HFRs is revealed using the said developed model,including:1)MMC controller instability,and 2)Interaction instability between MMC and AC ***,the mathematical expressions outlining the controller stability constraint and positive damping constraint are ***,NSGA-III based multi-objective optimization algorithm is adopted,to identify the region most suitable for satisfying the proposed stability constraints under the MMC controller *** proposed controller design method is capable of effectively evading the HFRs triggered by the incompatible *** detailed time-domain simulations generated using PSCAD/EMTDC software validate the proposed designed method and endorse the improved results.

Based on a practical long-distance large-capacity transmission engineering case, the small-signal stability of fractional frequency transmission system (FFTS) with Y-connected modular multi-level converter (Y-MMC) is mainly researched in this paper. Different from the previous control strategies of Y-MMC, this paper establishes a frequency decoupling mathematical model and proposes the decoupling control strategies. Then, the small-signal model of the Y-MMC system is obtained. Considering the existence of phase locked loop (PLL) will deteriorate the stability of the system under weak grid, this paper applies the short-circuit ratio (SCR) for analysis and proposed a new structure of PLL, called phase-shifted PLL (PS-PLL), to improve the small-signal stability of the system. In addition, for better stability and dynamic response performance of the closed-loop control system, this paper proposes a new parameter optimization objective function for parameters adjustment. controller parameters optimization is conducted by using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and stability evaluation of the system is conducted based on the eigenvalue distribution. Finally, the feasibility and superiority of the proposed strategies and optimization are verified in MATLAB/ Simulink.

Dynamic Security optimization for N-1 Secure Operation of Hawai'i Island System With 100% Inverter-Based Resources

Reliable power system operation with 100% inverter-based resources (IBRs) is an unsolved and challenging problem. One of the most challenging factors is ensuring power system stability after N-1 contingencies. This paper presents a promising solution using an operator support system (OSS) to enable stable operation of power system with up to 100% IBR generation. The OSS consists of two components. First is dynamic security assessment to evaluate the system resiliency, and identify critical N-1 contingencies that could endanger the system. The second component, as the key technology behind the OSS, is dynamic security optimization (DSO). The DSO optimizes the control parameters of generators and inverters to improve the stability of the system towards the identified N-1 contingencies. The key to system with 100% IBRs, as emphasized in many recent studies, is to establish the grid frequency reference using grid-forming (GFM) inverters. We show through high-fidelity Electro-Magnetic-Transient (EMT) simulations of the future generation models of Hawai'i Island system with 100% IBR capacity that a system with 100% IBRs can be operated stably with the help of GFM inverters, and appropriate controller parameters can be found by DSO for the inverters. The DSO is verified via 28 critical N-1 contingencies of Hawai'i Island system identified by Hawaiian Electric. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of DSO, and show significant stability improvement from DSO.

Attitude Control and parameter optimization: A Study on Hubble Space Telescope

In this work, we build a satellite attitude Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controlled system by using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) parameters as a reference and tune its controller parameters using various tuning methods. First, we give the equations for the motion of a satellite. We elaborate the control structure as controller, actuator, dynamics, and kinematics subsystems and construct an external disturbance model. We use a reaction wheel assembly used in the HST with the same configuration as the actuator. We evaluate the performance of the linearization by comparing it with the nonlinear model output. By working on the linearized model, we tune the PID controller parameters using two different methods: "Model-Based Root Locus Tuning" and "Genetic Algorithm Based Tuning". First, we obtain the controller parameters by manipulating the poles on the root locus plot of the linearized system. In addition, we use genetic algorithms to find the optimized controller values of the system. Finally, we compare the performances of the two methods based on their cost function values and find that the Genetic Algorithm-based tuned parameters are more fruitful in terms of the cost function value than the parameters obtained by the Root Locus-based tuning. However, it is found that the Root Locus-based tuning performs better in disturbance rejection.

Nonlinear Adaptive Back-Stepping optimization Control of the Hydraulic Active Suspension Actuator

The displacement tracking performance of the electro-hydraulic servo actuator is critical for hydraulic active suspension control. To tackle the problem of slow time-varying parameters in the existing actuator dynamics model, a nonlinear adaptive back-stepping control (ABC) approach is adopted. Simultaneously, the parameters of the nonlinear ABC are difficult to configure, resulting in a poor control effect. An enhanced particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach integrating crazy particles (CP) and time-varying acceleration coefficients (TVAC) is suggested to optimize the controller settings. Furthermore, in order to obtain satisfactory dynamic characteristics of the transition process, the absolute value of the error time integral performance index is used as the minimum performance index function of parameter selection, and the square term of the control input is added to the performance index function to prevent excessive controller energy. Finally, it can be observed from the simulation results of the highest value e(max) of the displacement tracking error, the average value e(mu) of error, and the standard deviation e(sigma) of error that the performance of the ABC parameters optimized by PSO+CP+ATVC is superior to the manually given ABC parameters. Therefore, this control method significantly improves the stability and speed of the control system. It provides a new research idea for the parameter optimization of controllers.

Frequency Deviation Control Incorporating Fuzzy Plus Non-Integer PID controller in EV Based Unified System

Different secondary controllers are necessary for Frequency deviation control to meet required power generation related to load demand. In this work a Fuzzy plus Non-Integer PID (FNPID) controller is projected for frequency deviation control in a unified system including EV (Electric Vehicle) aggregators. EVs are given priority because of its green environmental effect. Proper adjustment of gains of FNPID controller is also required to extract the best performance of the secondary controllers. Here a recent tuning process named as multi-verse optimizer (MVO) is applied for proper tuning of projected controller. The implemented dual area power system includes time varying delay-based EV aggregators and thermal generating units. The MVO technique is applied in the model to tune the controller constraints with abrupt application of load demand in one of the control areas. A time-based fitness function treated as ITAE (integral time absolute error) is applied to run the MVO algorithm. The dominance property of the projected FNPID controller over conventional Fuzzy-PID (FPID) and PID controller is observed in terms of different response specifications like maximum positive deviation (overshoot), settling time and minimum negative deviation (undershoot). The robust nature of the projected controller is also confirmed by multiple analysis like random load deviations and system constraints alteration.

This paper presents some of our first experiences and findings in the ARPA-E project ReNew100, which is to develop an operator support system to enable stable operation of power system with 100% non-synchronous (NS) generation. The key to 100% NS system, as found in many recent studies, is to establish the grid frequency reference using grid-forming (GFM) inverters. In this paper, we demonstrate in Electro-Magnetic-Transient (EMT) simulations, based on Hawai'i big island system with 100% NS capacity, that a system can be operated stably with the help of GFM inverters and appropriate controller parameters for the inverters. The dynamic security optimization (DSO) is introduced for optimizing the inverter control parameters to improve stability of the system towards N-1 contingencies. DSO is verified for five critical N-1 contingencies of big island system identified by Hawaiian Electric. The simulation results show significant stability improvement from DSO. The results in this paper share some insight, and provide a promising solution for operating grid in general with high penetration or 100% of NS generation.

A Novel Fault Ride-Through Strategy Based on Capacitor Energy Storage Inside MMC

Once modular multilevel converter (MMC) dc-side short-circuit fault occurs, the conventional fault ride-through (FRT) strategy indeed eliminates dc fault current quickly with the utilization of full-bridge submodules. Thereupon, ac-side active power declines sharply. However, instantaneous high power outage will cause ac-grid power and frequency oscillation and voltage instability, especially in MMC-based high-voltage direct-current transmission system. In order to solve this problem, a novel FRT strategy based on capacitor energy storage (CES) inside MMC (FRT-CES) is proposed, which can accomplish the clearance of dc fault current, ac-side grid support, and stable operation of MMC simultaneously. Through theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation, the prerequisite of CES utilization and universal design of improving ac-side transient characteristics are proposed and quantified. Based on the quantified results, the potential capability of MMC inner CES can be excavated to attenuate the transient change of ac-side active power after dc fault. Also, the proposed universal design is applicable to other MMCs with different capacity ratings. Finally, the threat of dc fault and its negative impact propagating into ac grid are both suppressed. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed FRT-CES strategy.

The positive damping characteristic of a modular multi-level converter (MMC) is important for improving the stability of an MMC based system. However, it is difficult to optimize the impedance characteristics of the MMC by adjusting the controller parameters, due to the complexity of the existing impedance model. This paper investigates the influence of the voltage-frequency(VF) controller on the impedance of an MMC, in which the relationship between open loop controlled impedance and VF controlled impedance is established. Based on the proposed impedance model, Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III (NSGA-III) is used to optimize the parameters of the VF controller, which makes the MMC positive damping in chosen frequencies. The time domain simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC verify the proposed impedance model and the optimized results.
