A new method for spatial coupling of low-density parity-check ensembles is proposed. The method is inspired from overlapped layered coding. Edges of local ensembles and those defining the spatial coupling are separately built. The new method allows the construction of non-uniform coupling chains with near-Shannon spatially-varying thresholds under iterative decoding. A direct application of non-uniform spatial coupling is unequal error protection of information.

In this paper, we prove a MacWilliams identity for the weight adjacency matrices based on the constraint codes of a convolutional code (CC) and its dual. Our result improves upon a recent result by Gluesing-Luerssen and Schneider, where the requirement of a minimal encoder is assumed. We can also establish the MacWilliams identity for the input-parity weight adjacency matrices of a systematic CC and its dual. Most importantly, we show that a type of Hamming weight enumeration functions of all codewords of a CC can be derived from the weight adjacency matrix, which thus provides a connection between these two very different notions of weight enumeration functions in the convolutional code literature. Finally, the relations between various enumeration functions of a CC and its dual are summarized in a diagram. This explains why no MacWilliams identity exists for the free-distance enumerators.

In this paper, a novel setpoint-based design approach for Irregular Repeat Accumulate (IRA) codes in iterative detection and decoding structures is presented. In contrast to conventional IRA code design in which the convolutional decoder is combined with the detector, the goal behind this approach is to keep the IRA decoding structure consisting of convolutional decoder and repetition decoder intact, i.e. to consider it as an inner loop of the overall detection structure. The outer loop is then composed of the IRA decoder and the system specific detector. This approach requires to adapt the irregular repetition code jointly to the convolutional decoder as well as to the detector which is achieved by formulating setpoints for the inner and outer code characteristic. As will be shown, the presented code design approach, although starting from a completely different viewpoint as the conventional approach, leads to an irregular repetition code with a very similar transfer characteristic and code rate than the conventional approach.

Recursive spatial multiplexing (RSM), a closed loop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) structure for achieving the capacity offered by MIMO channels with a low-complexity detector, is investigated in measured indoor MIMO transmission channels limited by different types of interference. It is seen that RSM can deal effectively with interferences following either a Gaussian mixture or Middleton distribution. In cases of interferences which are symmetric alpha stable distributed, however, RSM suffers from a performance degradation. Performance improvements resulting from the use of a convolutional coding at the single-input single-output (SISO) encoder of the RSM architecture are investigated for the different interference distributions.

In this paper, we study the design and the delay-exponent of anytime codes over a three terminal relay network. We propose a bilayer anytime code based on anytime spatially coupled low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and investigate the anytime characteristics through density evolution analysis. By using mathematical induction technique, we find analytical expressions of the delay-exponent for the proposed code. Through comparison, we show that the analytical delay-exponent has a close match with the delay-exponent obtained from numerical results.

In this paper we describe ensemble of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) block codes based on Partial Unit Memory (P) UM codes. We study a decoding performance of received ensemble in the case of different parameters of constituent LDPC codes. The results of simulation of obtained code constructions for an iterative "belief propagation" (Sum-Product) decoding algorithm, applied in the case of transmission of a code word via a binary channel with an additive Gaussian white noise and BPSK modulation, are presented.

Passive optical network based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM-PON) exhibits excellent performance in optical access networks due to its greater resistance to fiber dispersion, high spectral efficiency and flexibility on both multiple services and dynamic bandwidth allocation. The major elements of conventional OFDM communication system are two-dimensional (2-D) signal mapper and one-dimensional (1-D) inverse fast fourier transform (IFFT). Three dimensional (3-D) OFDM use the concept of 3-D signal mapper and 2-D IFFT. With 3-D OFDM, minimum Euclidean distance (MED) is increased which results in BER performance improvement. As bit error rate (BER) depends on minimum Euclidean distance (MED) which is 15.46 % more in case of 3-D OFDM as compared to 2-D OFDM. Forward error correction (FEC) coding is a technique where redundancy is added to original bit sequence to increase the reliability of communication system. In this paper, we propose and analytically analyze a new PON architecture based on 3-D OFDM with convolutional coding and Viterbi decoding and is compared with conventional 2-D OFDM under various system impairments for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) without using any optical dispersion compensation. Analytical result show that at BER of 10-9, there is 2.7 dB, 3.8 dB and 9.3 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain with 3-D OFDM, 3-D OFDM combined with convolutional coding and Viterbi hard decision decoding (CC-HDD) and 3-D OFDM combined with convolutional coding and Viterbi soft decision decoding (CC-SDD) respectively as compared to 2-D OFDM-PON. At BER of 10-9, 3-D OFDM-PON with CC-HDD gives 2.8 dB improvement in optical budget for both upstream and downstream path and gives 5.7 dB improvement in optical budget using 3-D OFDM-PON combined with CC-SDD as compared to conventional OFDM-PON system.

Data path widths in state-of-the-art Turbo decoder implementations depend on estimates for the upper bounds of the dynamic ranges of processed metrics. Aiming at highest area and energy efficiency, this paper presents guidelines for designing SISO and Turbo decoder data paths with minimal widths. This is based on least upper bounds for the dynamic ranges of internal metrics within the underlying Max-Log-MAP algorithm. Least upper bounds are presented for the LTE Turbo decoder. Furthermore, a new dynamic branch metric saturation scheme is presented in order to optimize the hardware utilization by proper adjusting the correlated upper state and branch metric bounds. In total, a data path width reduction of two bits is achieved applying radix-4 Max-Log-MAP arithmetic. An overall area-energy complexity reduction of 33% is achieved for the SISO decoder and of 28% for the LTE Turbo decoder.

convolutional codes are applied in applications that require good performance with low implementation cost. It is a finite state machine, processing information bits in a series mariner. Viterbi algorithm [1] can be applied to a host of problems encountered in digital communication systems. The Viterbi algorithm cannot detect any error but can sometimes correct it, while calculating one survivor path with minimum metric value. The maximum likelihood decoding of convolutional encoder with Viterbi algorithm is a good forward error correction [3] method suitable for single and double bit error correction by means of finding the code branch in the code trellis that was most likely to transmit. The modified decoding process proposed in this paper, we shall use a different approach to derive the exact bit, double bit, burst error and a symbol error correction process. It will detect and correct the errors by means of connecting and comparing the metric values at the present, previous and next states of the Viterbi decoding. also it is offering 30-36% better than the Viterbi and 99.9% of error correction, but the computational complexity is decreases and time are increases about 20-40%
