Wang et al. [6] proposed a scheme of allowing granter nodes to allocate multiple mini-slots to improve the data scheduling efficiency of the three-way handshake procedure, however, the size of the availability mini-slots is no considered. In fact, the available mini-slot space may not be contiguous but can include many windows of several slots in the actual data scheduling. To address this problem, we propose a novel data scheduling scheme, which is based on our proposed optimal model of mini-slots allocation, to reduce the number of mini-slot segments and to keep continuous mini-slots as long as possible. Simulation results show that our proposed scheduling schemes can achieve low transmission delay of data packets and high utilization ratio of mini-slots of all network nodes.

The IEEE 802.16 mesh mode coordinated distrbuted scheduling has been expected to he collision free so that only one node can transmit at any transfer opportunity (TO) in the two-hop neighborhood. We will show in this paper that this collision free property is not unconditional. Assuming the common interference modeling, necessary and sufficient conditions under which the IEEE 802.16 mesh mode coordinated distributed scheduling can be collision free are identified. As the IEEE 802.16 standard defines only a framework for the mesh mode coordinated distributed scheduling, our study could provide a suggestion oil flow to guarantee the correct functionality.

In this paper, we propose a cross-layer scheduling scheme named DCLASA for the coordinated distributed scheduling of IEEE 802.16 WMN. This scheme considers the channel quality information(CQI) in physical layer when designing the timeslot allocation algorithm in MAC layer, and adjusts the node's holdoff exponent according to CQI. Meanwhile multi-user diversity and adaptive modulation and coding technique are adopted to improve system performance. Simulation shows that DCLASA can increase the network total throughput, and reduce link transmission delay.

IEEE 802.16 based wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are a promising broadband access solution to support flexibility, cost effectiveness and fast deployment of the fourth generation infrastructure based wireless networks. Reducing the time for channel establishment is critical for low latency/interactive applications. In this paper, we propose two modifications to the election based transmission timing (EBTT) mechanism used in the coordinated distributed scheduling (CDS) within the IEEE 802.16 standard, which makes use of the standardized signaling messages and formats. Simulation results show that our proposed modifications results in significantly reduced channel establishment delay - up to 75% with low neighborhood densities - over the standard, and at least 10% with high neighborhood densities. Moreover, the proposed mechanisms are also applicable for the three-hop extended neighborhood CDS when required.

MAC protocols over wireless mesh networks:: problems and perspective

The wireless mesh network (WMN) has been an emerging technology in recent years. Because the transmission medium used in networking backhaul access points (APs) is radio, the wireless mesh network is not only easy and cost effective in deployment, but also has good scalability in coverage area and capacity. This paper provides an overview of distributed medium access control (MAC) protocols, discusses their features and suitability for WMNs and identifies potential challenges and open research issues. Specifically, we overview the technical medium access control of the new standard for WMNs, the mesh deployments of the IEEE 802.16 MAC and we focus on the coordinated distributed scheduling (CDS) scheme of this. Moreover, we assess the fitness of the IEEE 802.11 over wireless mesh networks. Through the study of existing solutions, we analyze the previous work and sketch the contours of the directions to achieve the throughput and the latency that must be guaranteed in WMNs. In this context we suggest future enhancements to the standard that could increase throughput, while also increase the robustness, without complexity increases and propose and evaluate a new distributed scheduling scheme (DSS). We compared the CDS and the DSS and simulations studies document and confirm the positive characteristics of the proposed scheme. The IEEE 802.16 standard is currently one of the most interesting broadband wireless access. One key issue of mesh networks is the MAC (Medium Access Control) layer. In this paper we analyze the coordinated distributed scheduling scheme (CDS) of the Standard IEEE 802.16. Since some fundamental parameters in this scheme has been left un-standardized, we focus on the dynamic setting of these parameters in order better performance in terms of throughput and average end-to-end data packets delay to be obtained. The Standard describes a data scheduler in a general way, based on a three-way-handshake mechanism, but details about data scheduler scheme have been left un-standardized. In order to obtain a better evaluation in terms of performance of the control schedule, we implemented a simplified data scheduler and we show how this simplified data schedule allows smaller data delay transmissions to be realized.
