Estimation of crowd sizes or the occupancy of buildings and skyscrapers can often be essential. However, traditional ways of estimation through manual counting, image processing or in the case of skyscrapers, through total water usage are awkward, inefficient and often inaccurate. Social media has developed rapidly in the last decade. In this work, we provide novel solutions to estimate the population of suburbs and skyscrapers-so-called micro-populations, through the use of social media. We develop a big data solution leveraging large-scale harvesting and analysis of Twitter data. By harvesting realtime tweets and clustering tweets within suburbs and skyscrapers, we show how micro-populations can be calculated. To validate this, we construct linear and spatial models for the suburbs in four cities of Australia using census data and geospatial data models (shapefiles). Our prediction of micro-population shows that Twitter can indeed be used for population prediction with a high degree of accuracy.

The study focused on the relationships between the North Atlantic Oscillation index and water temperature, number of days with ice, and water level in the Odra river estuaries. Statistically significant relationships occur mainly in the winter period (December-February, DecemberMarch, January-March), even up to alpha = 0.01. The strongest relationships with the NAO index are observed for the water temperature and number of days with ice, mainly in areas with minor water motion (Szczecin Lagoon). The correlation coefficients for water temperature are even > 0.80. Only slightly weaker correlation coefficients apply to the NAO relationships to the number of days with ice, especially in the Odra river (in Widuchowa) and in the Pomeranian Bay (in Migdzyzdroje). The relationships are deteriorated there by the relatively intensive water motion (ice inflow and outflow). During extreme winters (very harsh or very mild) in the Odra river estuary, local factors, mainly the local southern Baltic Sea atmospheric circulation, negatively affect the NAO relationships to the thermal and ice parameters. The weakest relationships to the NAO index apply to the water level;they are characterized by correlation coefficients < 0.60 and weaken inland in the Odra river estuary. During some winters the NAO index relationships to the water level may be distorted by the wind and extreme inflows from the upstream sections of the Odra river. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Plant breeders' efforts in developing drought tolerant and high-yielding cowpea varieties may be in vain unless the developed varieties are evaluated to ascertain the influence of water stress on their nutritive value, antioxidants, and phenolic contents under contrasting moisture regimes. The study was set up to evaluate the nutritional value, phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of cowpea Recombinant Inbred Lines (RILs) under contrasting soil moisture in the Guinea and Sudan Savanna agro-ecologies of Ghana. Forty-eight cowpea RILs seed samples from well-watered and water stress experiment were pulverized. Distillation and titration was carried out and the organic samples extracted and various biochemical analyses were carried out using standard protocols and methodologies. The dried grain mineral contents were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, while the protein content was determined by the combustion method. correlation and regression analysis and principal component analysis were performed using STATA version 13. Biochemical analysis for seed related traits revealed that inbred lines responded differently to drought. Significant differences of watering regimes on various phytochemical traits were only observed in phosphorus and lead. Inbred line with family number 57 had the highest crude protein content of 46.90% under well-watered conditions. Inbred line 84 under water stress conditions had high levels of Mg and K. Inbred line 20 under well-watered conditions had the highest antioxidant content. For phenolic acid content, inbred line 255 scored the highest. Quercetin and rutin were most abundant in inbred line 186 for both water-stress and well-watered conditions. The indication is that moisture stress could affect seed yield but no effects on the phytochemical and nutritional variables. Genotypic differences could arise from parental combination used for developing the inbred lines for the study.

When undertaking experiments with fruits and ovules in tissue culture, it is important for embryos to be at the same developmental stage. Chick pea (Cicer arietinum L.) plants cv. Hermosillo were grown under growth chamber conditions. Length, width, fresh weight, dry weight, total number of ovules, and no. of growing ovules were measured in the fruits. The embryos were classified according to their developmental stage as globular, early heart, heart, late heart, and torpedo. Data were analyzed using correlations, multiple regression, and path coefficient analysis. Embryo stage (ES) was highly correlated with days after pollination (DAP), pod fresh weight, pod dry weight, pod length, pod width and length .times. width. regressionanalysis indicated that the best estimates of ES using one, two or three independent variables can be obtained with pod length (R2 = 0.726);pod fresh weight (R2 = 0.726);DAP and fresh weight (R2 = 0797);DAP, fresh weight and number of growing ovules (R2 = 0.836), respectively. Path coefficient analysis showed that pod fresh wt is the most important variable affecting ES.

A study has been carried out on the properties of zinc sulfide obtained by precipitation from aqueous zinc sulfate solution with gaseous hydrogen sulfide. The influence of three factors, namely flow, temperature, and initial concentration of the zinc solution, on (i) the rate of precipitation of zinc sulfide, and (ii) the cathodoluminescent efficiencies of the resultant phosphors has been investigated. Experimental results were interpreted by an empirical method, using a correlation and regression analysis performed by computer procedures. This approach has established quantitative relationships on the behavior of both the rate of formation of and the phosphor efficiency as changes occur in the three variables which influence the conditions of precipitation.

In this paper we present a method for the functional analysis of human heart based on electrocardiography (ECG) signals. Influence of tax policy of the state and its regions is vital for country's economy;it is the major source of allocation of expenditure obligations of tax capacity on the sub-federal level. The purpose of this research is to estimate the predictive tax capacity of regions (TCR) and to create a comparative evaluation of regions on the basis of criteria, which are influencing the tax capacity using different methods of evaluation: multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) and econometric methods. Criteria, which are having the greatest influence on the TCR, were identified on the basis of empirical data both using regressionanalysis and expert estimates. The objective, subjective, and cumulative weights have been calculated, the degree of concordance of expert opinions was gauged. The comparative evaluation of the TCR in four regions of Russia in 2000-2012 was performed on the basis of MCDM methods.

Aggregate active and reactive power demands measured at 84 Scottish medium-voltage (MV) buses are used in this paper for the correlation and regression analysis, aimed at demand profiling and load decomposition. Demand profiles are presented with respect to the long-term seasonal variations, medium-term weekly and short-term diurnal cycles, allowing for the characterisation and presentation of load behaviour at different time-scales. The linear relationships between active and reactive power demands, temperature and power factor variations are quantified using regressionanalysis, on a per-hour of the day basis, as well as using a sliding-window regression approach for estimating relative coefficients within a seasonal moving window. The paper presents three different approaches for the decomposition of aggregate network demand into the temperature-dependent loads (i.e. thermal heating and cooling loads) and temperature-independent loads, providing important basic information for the application of the "smart grid" functionalities, such as demand-side management, or balancing of variable energy flows from renewable generation.
